A silly weekend question. I was making a very healthy ( ) crunchy peanut butter and seedless raspberry jam on thick white bread sandwich the other day when it occurred to me that I could make it even healthier ( ) by not buttering the bread first. So I tried it and disliked it because it was too dry. So, as the US is the home of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and I came to these very late in life having never made one for either of my children, do you butter the bread first or do you not butter the bread at all?

This should have been another option, shouldn't it.

I have a slice of toast and peanut butter just about every day for lunch. It doesn’t seem dry, probably because the toast is warm and melts the peanut butter a bit.

I also have never eaten a peanut butter and 'jelly' sandwich. But I have eaten plenty of peanut butter sandwiches, and plenty of slices of toast with peanut butter. I never used to put butter on a peanut butter sandwich or toast, but then DSO got me into the habit. Because who doesn't need a little more fat and calories, with their fat and calories?

I've never made a PBJ with butter. To me, it tastes best when you use soft bread, smooth peanut butter, and lots of jelly.
My peanut butter preference is the "cheap stuff" which has added oil, not natural style.

Just peanut butter and bread. I've never heard of putting butter on the bread also.

If I was going to eat a peanut butter and jam sandwich (which I'm not) I would definitely use cholesterol lowering spread butter, two butters are always better than one.

I don’t in a pb and j but love butter and peanut butter on toast. I just had toast and peanut butter for breakfast but didn’t add butter because my eating habits have been horrible lately. I did add some seedless strawberry jam on top though.

Why bother with butter in the first place.
Of course, our bread is kept in the freezer b/c we just don’t eat that much bread. Stays fresh, and thaws quickly while you make your sandwich 🙂

I have never heard of butter on a pg&j. I don't find a pb&j dry as the jelly makes it moist. I think what would make it dry is "thick" bread. Too much bread to the pb&j. I'm not a bread person at all, so absolutely no thick bread and I have often done a sandwhich open faced to omit that 2nd slice.
Now I have heard of people putting butter on other types of sandwiches in order to keep the mayo or other condiment used frm making the bread soggy. But, I don't think peanutbutter would make bread soggy.

I put the butter on the outside of the sandwich and make a grilled pb&j as I would a grilled cheese. Delicious!

Eww! Blech! No butter! When I was a kid my grandma didn't know that my mum never put butter on my food ... at the time I didn't like it on anything (what was I thinking?) ... she put it on my peanut butter and jam sandwich and I started to heave ... a memory I will never forget obviously!

(what Northern English folk call a sandwich). It's bread, buttered and filled with whatever. I keep my bread in the freezer too but wait for a couple of slices to thaw before making a sandwich or the butter won't spread on it!

But, I don't think peanutbutter would make bread soggy. I mentioned I was using thick bread to distinguish it from normal thin/sandwich bread but it wasn't overly thick. It was fresh and soft too, so the bread wasn't the problem. You can tell I AM a bread person. If I'm making a sandwich, the bread is always buttered (a) as a barrier to the soggier stuff and (b) to stick the sandwich together so the filling doesn't fall out.

I've never eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and I've never eaten a peanut butter an Fluff sandwich. I've plain peanut butter sandwiches and have never buttered the bread. Didn't know that was a thing. Even if I have peanut butter on toast, I don't butter it first.

Never eaten a PB & J sandwich! Sorry gillyp - I rarely eat PB - if I do it’s in the groove of a celery stick with a pinch of salt - yep I’m weird lol

I only ever knew one person to put butter first on a peanut butter & jelly sandwich and that was my one grandmother. The first time I saw her make a pb&j I was like this: I thought it was the weirdest thing I had ever seen in my young life, LOL! I did still eat it, but it seemed all wrong to me. After all, the ingredients for the sandwich are right in the name "Peanut butter" and "Jelly". So one day I told that story to DH because I saw him butter toast, then put jam on one side and peanut butter on the other and despite the fact that he often made toast that way he had never tried making an untoasted peanut butter and jelly sandwich that way. So go figure!

I have never buttered the bread before putting peanut butter on it. However, when I was a child I loved cottage white bread toasted, with butter and then jam. I prefer strawberry jelly/preserves (not many chunks) with peanut butter. Raspberry is good without the PB

I prefer honey to jam/jelly. Must be extra crunchy peanut butter. I butter the one slice and then put honey on top of the butter. I only use butter for baking, so it’s the heart *healthy* variety. Although, I rarely eat these.

I have never, ever heard of buttering PB&J bread....? And I grew up eating them and its a family fave to this day. You should have asked strawberry or grape jelly if you wanted some controversy. ETA: Oh AND, I PB both slices of bread, so the jelly doesn't seep out. Funny this comes up b/c my husband just saw me making one the other day for my son and he didn't realize I did that. I swear that was a 2Peas trick I learned on the old board probably 15 years ago!

I have never buttered the bread before making a PB&J in my life. I’ve also never made one with toasted bread. I think the only ways a PB&J would be dry was if the peanut butter was the natural kind that doesn’t have extra oil or whatever in it or if the bread is the type with all the whole grains and stuff in it. My mom used to put a thicker layer of peanut butter on one piece of bread and a very thin layer of peanut butter on the jelly side of the bread before adding the jelly or jam, to keep the bread from getting soggy from the jelly or jam.
Now having said all that, my DH thinks I’m weird because if I’m making any other kind of a sandwich (ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, etc.) I prefer butter as the spread on the bread vs. mayonnaise, Miracle Whip, mustard or anything else of the sort.

...and I never put jam or jelly with the PB. I put PB on both pieces of bread and then a very light sprinkle of sugar over the PB and press both bread pieces together. I use less than a teaspoon of sugar for the sandwich.

I swear that was a 2Peas trick I learned on the old board probably 15 years ago! LOL. My mom made all of the jelly and jam we had in the house when I was growing up. She would make dozens of jars of strawberry and raspberry from scratch every year but never ever grape, so that wasn’t ever a thing for us. I always thought it was weird that Costco sells grape and strawberry Uncrustables at the business centers but that they only sell the grape ones at the regular stores. I’d think strawberry would be preferred by way more people than grape.

Before my peanut allergy, no. I selected I don't eat them because I don't but no. Peanut butter on both slices with strawberry or grape jelly on one side them smoosh together. Cut at an angle for 2 triangle pieces. BBQ chips and a pickle on the side.

I had no idea I was in the minority! I always butter the bread first when making a peanut butter sandwich. It's just the way I've always done it, so I'll just have to contend with the extra calories and fat because I'm not going to switch to no butter. To me, the best combo is PB and grape jelly with a glass of ice cold milk and a few slices of cheddar cheese on the side. I don't eat this very often, but I really enjoy it when I do. It reminds me of my childhood!

ETA: Oh AND, I PB both slices of bread, so the jelly doesn't seep out. This is essential! I only wish my mom knew that when I was a kid taking them in my lunchbox. Luckily for my own kids, I figured this out before they came along.
