An American woman has been found in the depths of a forest in India, chained to a tree. She was screaming like an animal apparently but finding her was pure chance. She is saying her husband chained her up and she had money, ID etc there with her which seems to rule out theft. Her husband has yet to be found. An odd story that seems to ask more questions than it answers currently. Mystery surrounds US woman found starving and chained to tree in India www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4ngne7g5v3o

That is so strange. There is some weird stuff that is reported/going on. Even if only a tiny fraction of them are true, it just shows what a strange, weird, and surprising world we live in. I am often amazed by what I hear and read and yet not really shocked either.

Well somebody changed her to the tree and I suppose she could’ve chained herself. She obviously needs some medical and psychiatric help.

The whole thing is weird, isn’t it. I didnt think humans could live 40 days without water. Plus if she’d been there that long would she have had the strength to scream? I was half thinking she chained herself too, and maybe if she was ill treated it was her way of getting back at the husband. Her bag was close by.

She was certainly emaciated though! If she did it herself she was very lucky to be found according to the story although, if she did have serious mental health problems logic wouldn't necessarily come into it I guess.

More likely she killed him and is trying to get away with it... They have "registered a murder attempt" on the husband but can't find him.
Obviously, no one survives 40 days without water. Possibly food, if they had good reserves at the beginning, but you'd have to have shelter and water.

This is one of those stories where I'll sit back and wait to hear anything that makes any sense, because right now, nothing makes sense at all. (Okay, her not eating for some period of time does make sense given her appearance, but certainly not 40 days without food and water.)

I read that it rains every day in the area she was found. They speculate that she drank rain water, either catching it with her clothing, or maybe even digging a hole.

My vote for understatement of the year: "At some point, she had a falling out with her husband."

It’s also unlikely that she would know exactly how many days she had been tied up.

Definitely an odd story that isn't adding up. I wonder if she has any family in the US that might be able to shed light on her history?

It’s also unlikely that she would know exactly how many days she had been tied up. She probably knows the date she would have gone missing and I am assuming someone would tell her the date it was when they found her. Or she could have counted the days since she was outside. I don't think that proves much. Obviously this story is all sorts of suspect, but that is the least weird thing happening.

40 days? Then this sentence doesn't make sense:"
"The forest she was discovered in is vast and she otherwise could have gone for days without anyone hearing her cries for help."

The Indian police have updated the story www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj4xxgkj7k1oBBC Saurabh Agarwal, superintendent of police for Sindhudurg, told BBC Marathi on Tuesday that Ms Kayi had now said that she was not married and that she was probably suffering from hallucinations when she gave her first statement. Police said she told them she had been distressed because her visa had run out and she was running out of money, so she had bought locks and chains and tied herself to the tree. Dr Sanghamitra Phule, superintendent of the psychiatric hospital where Ms Kayi is being treated, told BBC Marathi that "her condition is improving". "She eats, walks and also exercises. She is under treatment and we are also giving her some nutrients that her body was lacking." Dr Phule said her family had been traced in the US and that Ms Kayi was in touch with them on the phone.

Thanks for posting the update, wellway. Definitely a sad situation, but not surprising. I'm glad they were able to connect with family in the US.
