I've always wondered how the North Koreans travel to international events, not just the Olympics. I am sure there are "guides" with them at all times. I am sure the TV's in any hotel room they stay in are disconnected. Are they allowed to look out of the bus windows? Are they allowed any sightseeing? How much mingling with people from other countries are they allowed? When they walk through airports, I am sure they see all the material goodies and food that are available. I just wonder how the NK government is able to keep them "isolated" from the world.

I have been wondering the same thing. I wonder if the government is scared that they might defect after seeing a bigger world out there.

I started wondering about that when a South Korean athlete took a selfie with a group including North Korean athletes.

What got me thinking about this was the female NK gymnast on the floor exercise during the AA finals. She seemed so cheerful and happy, smiling and waving to the crowd. Not what you usually think of you when you see serious, non-smiling NK athletes.

It was probably like the handlers for Cuban team. Russian athletes usually come with an entourage of security when they're not banned.

They are also very well provided for probably including their immediate families. Or
Maybe they are sheltered from most of the conditions in NK?

We were talking about this as well. I found an article that said in the past if the athletes disappointed the dear leader and "brought shame to the country" that they could be sentenced to public shaming or even work camps for several years (and three generations of their families to the same). I am not sure how it is now.
My sister graduated from Syracuse a few years ago and said that there were North Korean students there. They came from affluent families. I was surprised to hear that. But maybe they are children of government workers who live much differently than the average citizen?

What a great question! I would love to know what they think when they see the airport shops and other athletes etc. I’m sure they’re kept on a very tight leash. I wonder what kind of warnings or brainwashing they’re given before the leave home.
