UPDATE: since it's not that expensive, I'll probably just go buy a new box. Thanks to all who answered.
I use it so infrequently but need some for a recipe I'm making next week. I have a Tupperware container of some but I have no idea how long I've had it. Toss or use? What say the Peas.

Toss since you don't know how long you have had it. I never use it past a year and always buy fresh for the holidays.

It is sugar. I don't think it has an expiration date.
Powered sugar is made from granulated sugar.
I would use it.

Or if you are nervous about it, you can grind granular sugar to a powder.

It absolutely goes bad. Does it smell normal? Taste normal?
I made the mistake of using some a year or two ago that my mom had brought to my house. The bag was still sealed, so I didn’t think anything of it, but there must have been a pinhole that meant it wasn’t airtight.
I had to toss the whole batch (like 3-4 doz!) of intricately decorated holiday cookies and start over.

Or if you are nervous about it, you can grind granular sugar to a powder. But you will need to add cornstarch. Powdered sugar has cornstarch added. That is why it thickens. I tried it with arrowroot one time and it wasn't the same.

It won’t go bad, but taste it. If it tastes funky, toss it.
I’ve successfully made my own—using a food processor, grind the sugar to a powder. You don’t need to add cornstarch unless you need it to thicken a recipe or you are storing it, although I do add it for consistency purposes between recipes. The ratio is 1 cup of sugar to 1 tablespoon of cornstarch.
But, the sugar crystals did etch the bowl of my food processor. (I probably used turbinado or sanding sugar, but I don’t really remember.) Over time, that’s diminished as I’ve used it, but it was brand new the first time I made powdered sugar.

Taste and then decide?
Our wedding cake was made with a frosting made with granulated sugar that was ground up to make powdered sugar it was very gritty and not tasty at all. I wouldn’t recommend that.

It won't kill you, but it's a quality issue. I'd taste it and go from there.

I tried it with arrowroot one time and it wasn't the same. Not all does. The brand I use does not. And it doesn’t thicken - I found the hard way with cream cheese frosting when it’s soft…adding more icing sugar makes it runnier, the trick then is to add corn starch 😊

Their sizes are smaller so that makes more sense that they only cost $1. Well, $1.25 now. It’s also good for junk food because the portions are smaller.

I’m late to the party but I would smell it and taste it and if there aren’t any weird smells or taste, I’d use it. It can go off or pick up weird flavors from other things depending on how and where it’s stored, but if it’s sealed in a Tupperware or similar it will likely be good for a long time.

That would have been terrible to have to start those all over.

I was not excited to start over. 😂

I keep my icing sugar in a Tupperware and it takes years for me to go through it and it's always been fine. Tupperware really has the best seal and is worth it for a few things.
