I’m watching the balance beam finals and so many are falling, especially in a similar spot of the beam. Is there a chance that there is a problem with the beam itself? Any gymnastics experts here?

It is not on yet here, but I already know the results. I’ll still watch though and still be nervous. lol!!
I heard that several of the athletes said the arena was very quiet, more so than normal. It was a weird vibe they said, and made some of them more anxious and nervous.

Apparently they asked ahead of time for music to be played (like the other gymnastics events had) but then it didn't happen.

I know that athletes are taught to focus and ignore what is going on around them, but if nothing is going on around them, I imagine that is a different kind of “distraction”. I know I’ve been in situations where it was deathly quiet and I felt uncomfortable.
ETA - Yeah, being able to hear a phone ring would be a distraction. I guess music would usually mask those kind of sudden noises.

That’s interesting about the lack of noise/music. I just noticed that several girls fell or stumbled in close to the same part of the beam and was wondering if it was slippery or something.

I’ll look for that when I watch tonight. Still an hour away. Do they show the gymnastics right at the beginning of the broadcast?

During normal gymnastic competition all the events are going on at the same time , music for floor, cheering, clapping, groans etc. Not normal to hear a pin drop silence... Think of all the noise when they are at practice in their gyms with everyone else there also with students..
I watched it live early this morning...

Even the announcer was wondering if the beam was slippery or something. But in the end, the announcer just attributed all the falls to being tired.

I noticed the silence and thought it was distracting myself just watching. So I would assume that got into their heads? Very unusual to see so many fall.

I wondered the same thing last night. So odd for almost all of them to fall, right in a row.
