I've never had one, but I really want one. A lot of it is for my own safety since I am mostly alone. I like the idea of not having to carry my phone with me every where I go. A few months ago, I slipped on my basement steps. I didn't fall, but it got me thinking about what if I would have? What if I was seriously injured at the bottom of my basement steps?
I am not a techy gadget person at all. It took me years to even get an iPhone. LOL I would like to get one from Amazon because I have a bunch of gift cards I've been saving, but wow, it's so overwhelming. I have NO idea what to get. I heard that some of them have a "fall alert" that lets someone know if you have fallen? Anyway...what should I get? I would also like to be able to get pretty bands to switch out. I used to do that with my old fitbit.

I've had an Apple Watch for years. I just last month upgraded mine to a series 9 with cellular. It was on sale during Prime days. I get the cellular feature, so in case I'd fall somewhere where my phone wasn't close the watch would still work. I think the fall detection is on most Apple watches since the series 6.

I've been fine without the cellular feature but I absolutely understand why someone would want it. I love mine - I think if you're not a techy person, you're fine with the SE. I love my band - get one of the stretchy ones. I don't like the rubbery ones that come with the watches - I hate how they feel when I'm exercising. Funny (to me) story: when I was picking out a new band at Apple, I saw the rainbow one and said "Ooh, I want that." The young person at the Apple store looked at 59 year old me and said "Um, that's our Pride band" and I was like "I'm really okay with that..."

I would go with the best model you can afford.. the higher models have more features. and you should check on the fall alert ability. mine sometimes goes off randomly, but you just hit.. I did not fall or I fell, not injured. if you can, go to an apple store.

I'm a Samsung girl, so I am not any help to you but I did want to tell a somewhat funny story on the fall feature. I am married so there is not too much worry of a fall with no one around but it is nice to know it's there for the office. I am sometimes alone with no one in earshot.
Anywho, I was sleeping and something odd sounding/feeling woke me up. I guess I had been sleeping pretty violently or my hand hit the headboard very hard. I was getting a fall alert on my watch and without glasses had to figure out what to click to turn it off. First time that has happened. It is good to know it works though.
Good luck! My DD has the 6 maybe? She loves all the features on hers.

My 5 battery barely makes it thru the day and if i exercise (which I try to walk or swim), it is just wiped out pretty quick. I also like to get the biggest face I can. I know some women want the smaller face, but I wanted the biggest I could get (typically 2 sizes are offered). I know its only a difference of a couple of mm, but those millimeters seem to make a difference!

I have the 9 with cellular but haven’t had the need to pay for a plan yet so I haven’t done that. As long as the phone it’s paired to is within a certain range or if it’s connected to wifi, you might not need it. (I’m not sure exactly what the range is but I haven’t noticed I’ve needed it inside my house. We do have wifi that it can connect to in the house.) I’ve been able to text my DD from my deck when I’m outside with the dog when my phone is in the house.
It has a bunch of features I haven’t really explored and don’t really know how to use, LOL. I had to Google to figure out how to turn up the volume on it. I like how it pairs with my phone when I’m using navigation and the haptics buzz my wrist when a turn is coming up. I also like how the alarm works, it will buzz my wrist and I’ll wake up before the alarm actually sounds. I like how the watch gets notifications from our Arlo cameras and the Ring doorbell. You can get text messages and emails on it. You can use it as a remote for your phone camera! I use the timers with Siri a lot when I’m baking or cooking. It’s really pretty amazing.

I have the SE and I wanted the cellular feature because I want to be able to listen to music and audiobooks through my watch when I walk, even if I leave my phone at home. I love it. It's perfect for me. I can also use the Strong app to track gym workouts and leave my phone at home, which is great, because otherwise I tend to leave it on the last equipment I was on. I actually got it through Verizon (our cell phone carrier) and it just added a small monthly charge to my bill to cover both the watch and the cell coverage.
I also prefer the stretchy bands over the silicone ones and have found plastic bracelet bands I like as well. My favorite is a cream-colored tortoise bracelet band. It was easy to adjust the size when I got it so it fits snugly enough to track heartrate, etc.

Do you have an Apple Store nearby? I would go there to see all the models, watch bands, and ask questions. Then, order from Amazon. I think Costco, Target, Best Buy, and Walmart sell a few watches. You could also go there and check them out. Oh. and don’t forget the phone stores.
I don’t have the cellular model. Since my phone is always close by, I haven’t needed it. But I can see where it can come in handy. I agree with buying the best you can afford. They last a long time so you wouldn’t have to upgrade for awhile.

I upgraded to the 9 (Merry Christmas to me) and I love it. I don't remember what version I had before but it wasn't that old and I feel like the 9 has lots of improvements over it. I don't have cellular on mine but I'm never far from my phone so haven't really felt the need to have it. I also have noticed that if I'm some distance from the phone, it still works. Like if I'm outside. I'm married but I spend a lot of time alone and the fall feature was important to me. Love, love, love my Apple Watch!!

I took advantage of prime day to upgrade from a series 3 to a 9, w/o cellular. I love my watch and wear it daily. Lots of great features, though I mostly use it to track workouts and answer calls. I have a lot of watchbands--some leather, some silicone, a metal mesh--that I bought for my 3 (which was 38mm) that also fit my 9 (41mm). I bought all from Amazon (so much less expensive than from Apple and still quality). I like the silicone band over the stretchy ones--just my personal preference.

My daughter’s broke at LaLaPalooza this weekend, and I ordered a replacement this morning.

If she can buy it from Costco and has their credit card, she would save on the advertised price due to the rebates. I’m pretty sure they carry all of the various models currently out. That’s where I got mine last Christmas and got a 2% rebate from my executive membership and another 2% rebate on Costco purchases from the credit card. It’s bigger purchases like this that really make these programs worth doing.

My dh has 1 with cellular.... He runs a lot and likes that it syncs with his music and he doesn't need to carry his phone... he can also call or text if he needs to.. with his phone at home...
He took a hard trip awhile back on the irrigation canal down from our property.. he laid out for a few minutes and his phone kept telling him hard fall detected.. do you need assistance? that made me have some peace of mind that if something were to happen to him out in the middle of the country at least an ambulance would be sent...
I don't have wear a watch, so no desire on my part... but I think it will bring a lot of peace and comfort... to know that help is just a click away...

I purchased the 6 when it was first available. If I were to replace mine now, I would get an SE because I don't use most of the features that came with the 6 at the time. Here is a good comparison of the current models. To be away from your phone though, you will need to get cellular service. Also to note, they will be announcing their new line-up next month I believe. So you may want to wait for the latest and greatest.

Get the cellular feature because I fell and broke my shoulder at night in February and didn’t have my phone. If you want contact with others, pay for the cell plan. My shoulder is still giving me grief.

If it's in your budget, get the latest model (9) with cellular service. I got a 9 for Christmas. I opted not to get cellular service, after my DD talked me out of it. She said that she got cellular for her partner, but he has never needed to use it. And as she pointed out, I never go anywhere without my phone! But if one of the reasons you want a watch is for the fall alert, then I would definitely consider paying extra for cellular.
I love my Apple Watch!
ETA: I think the new phone and watch models come out in September, so if you're not in any hurry, it might be a good idea to wait until then.

I would suggest the bigger face. I have the smaller and when I upgrade I will go bigger.
Another consideration; the cellular add on is $10/month extra (we have Verizon) Although I have a cellular watch, I’m cheap and don’t want to pay another $10/month so would have been ok without it.
The watch for me was a gift, but I love it and hope the same for you!

Do it!
If you go to th Apple website, you can compare models from one to the next. I bought DD a watch for Christmas 2023 and it was helpful to see all the features.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I think I will go to the Apple site to compare. I feel weird about going into a store and taking up someone's time then coming home and buying it on Amazon. Although the $299 deal at Costco sounds good, too. Thanks again!

don't feel guilty about shopping as a lookyloo at an apple store. I can tell you they don't care at all. apple is worth billions.. and don't care where you buy the product. at all.
so look at them in person. you could go frequently if you wanted. their stores are designed as a space to hang out.. not just buy and go.

Something to consider - the 10 is rumored for released in September, and rumors are that it will have some features that interest me including a blood pressure checker (not as good as a real one, but a nice idea) and sleep apnea detection. There have been rumors for a while of one that will detect changes in blood sugar levels, but it seems like that is a release or two away still.
