My son wanted blond hair but as you can see, it didn't work. It's the worst color of brassy/orange! Does anyone have experience with dying back hair? His hair is normally dark brown and I'm willing to box dye it myself but I'm worried it won't cover it. HELP!

Sorry that things went bad. From the picture at least, I don’t think it looks orange and I don’t think it looks bad (again from the picture). I would be worried about making things worse. I hope you can get some good advice.

Does he hate it? I don't think it looks terrible unless he wants it very obviously light blonde. Maybe on my screen it's not as bad as in real life.
He can bleach it again and use a toner to remove the brass to get a true blonde, or you can try a warm brown at home. Just don't try anything ash toned.

Yeah, it generally takes more than one process to lift dark hair to a real blond. It's not something to be done at home. Honestly, I'd take him to a salon rather than try to fix it yourself at this point.

My son's baseball team dyed their hair blonde and they used a very strong bleach. He is very fair-skinned and was very skinny so he looked like an alien and his head looked like a tennis ball.

Purple shampoo can help that.
Honestly, most of the boys at my school that dye their hair have really brassy hair. I keep wanting to tell them- toner or blue shampoo! But evidently brassy hair is cool.

He was trying to get it really blond but picked the wrong hair sample (at the salon). Lesson learned!

It's a long drawn out process to go from dark brown to blonde. Unless he is ok with the possibility of serious hair breakage, this is best done by a professional who does this on the regular. I've seen the results of supposed licensed cosmetologists who didn't know what they were doing destroy hair.

My first choice would be go back to the salon.
I did successfully fix my DD's hair with an at home color. She had a lot of really long hair and tried to home color it from medium brown to bright red, like color crayon red. It looked similar to your DS's hair. My friend, the stylist, advised me to do it again with 2 more boxes of color, so we had enough to really cover all the hair.
Good luck!

If a salon did this, go back to that salon.
If he did it at home, go to a salon and seek a hairdresser who knows about coloring hair. Some hairdressers are very skilled at coloring hair.
Do not try to fix it at home. This is the time for a trained professional to work their magic.

No reputable colorist would let a client walk out like that and blame it on what "he picked." Sorry. I hope he didn't pay for it.

Hair amlost always turns orange when going from dark to light. My first recommendation is to go to a professional and have it fixed. My second recommendation is to buy L’oreal Hyper Platinum and bleach it again. But you risk damaging the hair. Go with 1st recommendation
ok, this is why you need to read the thread…READ THE THREAD! Find a color specialist with good reviews for going blond.

I have dark brown hair and went to a salon for highlights once. They pulled brassy orange just like his!
I went and got a box color that was close to my hair color, and dyed it back. It worked. Lesson learned, lol.

Honestly, I'd take him to a salon rather than try to fix it yourself at this point. I don’t think it looks awful, but if he hates it and wants it brown again, I would join the other previous peas who said take him to a salon and be sure to take the box from whatever he used. My reasoning is that I have heard of major disasters where the hair became too damaged from products that should never be combined over each other. It dried the hair out to where it broke off, leaving a fuzzy stubble at the scalp. And this was on a female, so it wasn’t like you could just shave the head and regrow the hair. In the end, she did shave it because it kept falling out in chunks all over, and not evenly, and it looked like s he stuck her head in a mixer. She ended up having to buy a wig. So much for trying to avoid the expense of a salon color in the first place. The wig cost her mother a big chunk of money and she had to get a part time job to pay it back. Her mom was mad because she had told her not to do it at home herself and to wait until the end of the month and her mom would take her to have it done.

I've seen the results of supposed licensed cosmetologists who didn't know what they were doing destroy hair. Tell him to wait at least 2 weeks before doing another chemical process on his hair! The burnt up, wiry splits all over his head that could otherwise result will be worse than this.

Bald is "in"..........or even a crew cut. Guys hair grows so fast I'd probably recommend that.

Ok I know I’m probably too late but I’m a hairdresser.
If he wants to go back brown, look for something that days semi-permanent or fades in xx amount of washes. Look for something that starts with a number 6. It will probably say light brown or dark blond but trust me you don’t want to go darker than that.
If he wants to go lighter, get a lightener and do that first to get it lighter. Then you will need a toner, look for something cool or ash toned.
If you have a Sally’s nearby they are great to help with which things to buy.

I would definitely want a refund, then take him and that money to a reputable place for correction!

Two of my kids have tried to bleach their hair for baseball and it basically turned out like this. Luckily they only wanted the tips dyed. My oldest went to the cosmetology school and that was the lightest they could get it (per him and the student that worked on it). We tried an at-home kit as well but that didn't do much. The younger one tried to do it at home and got about the same results as the older one did.

Fwiw I think it looks better like that than the blonde he was probably going for. My DD (who is a pro, and coloring is her specialty) did my son's hair a pale lemon yellow, like he wanted, and I really hated it but didn't tell them. I was so glad when it grew out and he cut it off and went back to his dark brown.
Once I tried to take my own hair from light ash brown to Marilyn Monroe "pillow white", as she called it, 1960-62 era. Best I could do without the pro stuff was light lemony at the roots and white on the ends. My daughter can buy the pro stuff to get the process done quicker and more safely, but she wasn't alive yet then 😉

That looks like just what all the "cute boys" did in the 80s. All the skater boys dyed their hair that orange color just in the front. That is probably why I don't find it so awful.
