My husband is going to a convention in San Diego in mid-Oct. I'm tagging along and will have 3 days to entertain myself. We're staying near the convention center/gaslamp district. I'm not much of a shopper except for fun little non-clothing, not high-end shops. I'm planning on going to Balboa Park to various museums and maybe the zoo. What other recommendations would anyone have, that are easy for me to get to either with public transportation or an Uber? Traveling in big cities stresses me out Oh - and is the zoo worth the $75 admission? I live near the Omaha zoo which is like $25 to get into, so I'm kind of hesitant on that but would love to see the pandas. Thanks!

The San Diego Zoo is huge. Lots of walking and lots of hills. The pandas are on exhibit now at the zoo. You either get a timed entry ticket or a stand-by line. You can also sign up for the morning tour but I hear those fill up fast. Balboa Park also has a lot of museums and art shops.
From the gaslamp district, you can take a trolley to Old Town or Fashion Valley mall. If you like quilts or watercolor, there are museums for both in Liberty Station. There are lots of eatery and little shops at Liberty Station.
Weather wise, it may be hot or not, depends on the Santa Ana winds. But the nights will be nice and cool. Baseball will be over so you don’t need to worry about that crowd.

I really like the Corvette Diner. It's 50s style with original cherry, vanilla, and chocolate cokes. Quirky place.
Old Town Mexican Cafe has delicious freshly made tortillas. Delicious food. We like it better than Coyote Cafe.
There is the old carousel at Balboa and of course the USS Midway.
Yes the zoo is worth it. Lots to see there.

Not sure how far you want to travel but Torrey Pines and Birch Aquarium are lovely areas. Birch is next to UCSD. We love that aquarium. Great views.

We went to the zoo a few years back. There was a trolley that drove us around. I can't remember how much that cost, but it was worth it. There are lots of hills in that zoo and it is huge. Plus, with the trolley the driver gives information that you wouldn't normally get.

We bought a Go City Pass and did so much. The SD Zoo, all the museums at Balboa Park, the USS Constitution Maritime Museum, a harbor tour, PetCo park tour, and there was a lot more on the list. We just ran out of time. I wish we would've done the zoo's Safari Park but we'll do that next time. Link to Costo version. Link to CityPass.

I will likely be the lone dissenter who says skip the zoo. It's a ton of money, and at the end of the day it is still a zoo, and zoos are everywhere. However, Balboa Park, where the zoo is, is fabulous. Loads of cool museums, beautiful pocket gardens, fun history, places to eat and artsy shopping at Spanish Village.
There are loads of cool places to eat in the Gaslamp. I had a fabulous meal at Rustic Root last Friday, and I am already plotting a return. There are also several rooftop bars in the big hotels along the water that have incredible views.

I go to a convention in that area every few years. There is a little shopping area on the waterfront next to the convention hotels that is fine for touristy shopping, and plenty of places to eat in the gaslamp district. I think you can tour the aircraft carrier docked there. Like everyone, I will suggest Balboa Park. If you have a way to get a little further, my favorite thing to do is to go up to La Jolla and walk around and have dinner.
The zoo is impressive, but I don’t go unless I have kids with me. I like the further-out branch of the zoo better because it is quieter and shadier, but again, I wouldn’t go out there unless I were doing it for my kids.

Plus, with the trolley the driver gives information that you wouldn't normally get. If you do go to the zoo, definitely make your first stop the guided bus tour included in your ticket. The buses are open, double decker style and it will give you a good overview of the zoo and which areas you might want to go back and check out. TBH, I'm kind of with malibou, and would prioritize other things unless you are a must see the zoo person. For an overview of San Diego, the hop-on-hop-off trolley is a good choice. It will take you through the Gaslamp, Old Town, Balboa Park, along the harbor and over to Coronado. Like any HOHO bus, you can get off at any of the stops, wander around and get on the another to continue the tour. Personally, I'd take advantage of being on Coronado and go wander through The Del, eat there or someone along Orange Avenue while checking out the shops. Balboa Park is fabulous and you can easily spend a day there. My favorite museums are Mingei (folk art, craft and design), the Timken Museum of Art and the San Diego Museum of Art but there is literally something for everyone. And I will ditto malibou again and agree the Spanish Village Art Center is a must see stop with 200 artists at work in every medium you can think of. Perfect place to pick up a few holiday gifts. For the third day, I'd go to La Jolla (pronounce La Hoya ). An uber is probably your best transportation choice but you can get there on public transportation (Blue Line Trolley from downtown to UCSD and then local bus to La Jolla city center). I'd walk along the shore from Windandsea Beach to the La Jolla Cove and then head in a couple blocks to poke through the shops and have something to eat. A fun way to wander through La Jolla is to follow the Murals of La Jolla map. We did this during the stir-crazy days of Covid. Looking at the link, they have hosted tours now, but you can just follow the map on your own if the time doesn't work for you. One other thing I will add is you are in town Saturday morning, the Little Italy Farmers Market is one of our favorites and walking distance from where you are staying.

I tagged along to DH's conference last year and had a few days on my own. I didn't have a car, so I walked or ubered.
I went to the zoo (don't recall it being $75) and Balboa park one day. It was very freeing to do it without kids and go at my own pace and see what I wanted to see. I really liked the artsy area in Balboa park.
The next day I went to Coronado Island and paid for a chair rental and just laid on the beach and had frosty beverages and fruit brought to me and watched the military plans overhead.
I went to La Jolla one day, saw the sea lions and wandered around for a bit.
And I had a spa day one day. It was a great trip--now I think I need to plan another one!
We've both had conferences there before, so we've also wandered the Embarcadero and the Gas Lamp District and done a harbor tour. We've also rented bikes on Coronado Island and that was lots of fun. You can get to Coronado Island from a ferry at the Embarcadero.
Also, every time we go we have to get the duck at Juniper and Ivy. It is pricey, but sooooo good.

I’d skip the zoo.
For sure go to Balboa Park. You can spend an entire day wandering there. There’s an artist collective space there that is really cool too.
Old town is nice to wander.
Sea Port Village is nice. There are a few food places there
I enjoy visiting Coronado island and the brewery there and there’s gelato on C street (I think that’s the street). If you go to Coronado, visit the Hotel Del Coronado- it’s cool.
La Jolla is nice to wander
Torrey Pines is nice
If you want to gamble there are several Indian casinos around too.
Midway and I think a pirate ship are interesting.
eta- There’s a nice long paved trail along the water at Mission Bay too! We walk that anytime we are down there.
