We are traveling to Amsterdam at the end of August. We will see the traditional sites. But I was wondering if the Peas had any off the beaten path sites or experiences? Thanks

My friend and I did the windmill tour in Volendam. There is some walking involved and you will be in the sun, so prepare for that. There is an ice cream stand and you can buy water, lemondade etc. at the little shops on the way to the windmills. You can also climb up to the 2nd floor of the windmills. The town of Volendam is really cute also. windmills

End of August this year or next? Next year we'll have Sail Amsterdam, which is awesome (every five years). Are you looking for things to do in Amsterdam or around? Museums, food, nightlive, active things? It is not really off the beaten path but Amsterdam is lovely by boat. In addition to the regular tourist boats you can rent a private boat, with dinner or drinks and snacks. Too bad the Amsterdam Light Festival doesn`t start until November. For daytrips there are many options, including those mentioned above. Leiden, Delft, Zaanse Schans, Rotterdam, a bike tour in the country. I always like to look at sites that offer tours with locals, such as withlocals.com for ideas. I am sure there are others.

And so many nights I just dream of the ocean. God, I wish I was sailin' again.

Thanks We will be there then too! Only have a couple of days before our Rhine River cruise but we're excited to spend some time there. Have a great trip!

They have a vey flat walking path and there’s usually a few windmills that you can go into. There isn’t much parking on site, but we’ve had good luck in the late afternoon. There’s also parking in town with shuttles to take you to the site. The Hague is close by. And I’ll second Utrecht.

We did a bike tour through the countryside, which turned out to be one of the favorite things we did there. Lots of different companies offer them...

I’ve been there at different times of the year and never noticed any excessive dirt or trash. But some areas are messy if there was a big festival or event and hasn’t yet been cleaned up.

We have a number of events at the end of April and early May that bring hundreds of thousands to the city, such as Kingsday on the 27th of April (just google for pictures and you`ll get an idea) as well as the events around the end of WW2 on may 4th (remembrance) and 5th (celebration of our liberation), with music festivals throughout the city. I can imagine the garbage service hard time keeping up those weeks! It is a big city, with big city issues and its areas that are less nice, but overall I think it is safe and clean.

The corners of everywhere were piled with dirt and trash. There were weeds all over the sidewalk. There was lots of graffiti. My husband hadn’t noticed but once I pointed it out he was really surprised. I don’t know, I’m used to SoCal were it seems like everything is powerwashed every day. Amsterdam just seems like no one had swept the streets or sidewalks in years.

Several years ago I was visiting and it was "Orange Day?" and they day afterwards, everything looked like a disaster zone. Looked like there was a huge party the day before.

I was born and raised in Amsterdam. I would recommend "de 9 straatjes" (the nine streets). Very Amsterdam vibe, narrow streets crossing canals and lots of small quirky shops. Outside of Amsterdam I would recommend Haarlem. Absolutely amazingly beautiful. Take a canal tour while in Haarlem!
Have fun!
