Calling UK Peas (or others who has any info about this)!
My DD 19 is moving to England (from Norway) to go to university in about a month's time. She will be in Brighton for a bachelor's degree the next three years. I am going over with her to help with the move. We'll only bring two suitcases of mostly clothing, and the dorm on campus says that she will need to supply some things herself. She will have a private room, with an ensuite, and share a kitchen. From what I understand she will have to provide most of the kitchen supplies she will use, like plates and cutlery. But I believe also pots and pans.
What shops would we go to to buy cheap sets of kitchenware, bedsheets, towels, trashcans etc? Maybe some storagebins and other useful things for student housing?
I believe there is an Aldi close to her dorm, but not sure if they only sell food? We don't have Aldi in Norway.
This is my first one to leave for uni, and being overseas makes it a bit more complicated with the practical stuff!
Thanks in advance!

Aldi have a middle aisle with products, called special buys, the products on offer change every week, the joke is, went for a cheese and ham sandwich and left with a chainsaw and coffee maker. You might be lucky to find college items in stock but any non food items are a case of when it's gone it's gone. She will find Aldi food prices to be good. www.aldi.co.uk/c/specialbuysSupermarkets like Sainsbury's and Tesco will sell kitchen items, electrical stuff, bedding, stationary etc. Sainsbury's bought out Argos, a catalogue shop that sells a wide variety of items. There are Argos sections in a lot of Sainsbury's, you can order online and collect in store. Sainsbury's have a habitat household range.

Disclaimer, I don't live in the area and it's been many years since I was in Brighton but I think my first look would be one of the supermarkets like Asda or Tesco. Both carry household items as well as groceries and the prices are usually very reasonable. They have stationery too, as does The Works. There is also a Poundland there with rock bottom prices.
I think Aldi do sell things other than groceries but I don't think they have regular lines. I wish we had an Aldi here, they have a good reputation for food at reasonable prices I believe.

Another vote for Tesco. They will sell just about everything your daughter might need. You should be able to check out prices and store availability on their website. Another cheap option is B&M, but the quality is less reliable. Matalan also sells reasonably priced household goods.

As well as the above mentioned places, Ikea would be an option - I believe there's one in Brighton. Brighton is amazing, I hope she has a fantastic time

The FB group says : "This is NOT a group for: - students, themselves - families with students earning their entire degree overseas" I imagine there are some things that would apply no matter what the length of study, mind you.

Having literally just waved at my kid as she drove off with her car full of stuff this morning (US based and only going about 3 hours away) hugs mama, it's not easy. Also, I love that UK Aldi's and US Aldi's both have an Isle of Shame. I've heard the UK version gets better stuff though.

Primark is good for bedding, towels and storage items, she can also get things like throws, cushions, and bathmats from there.

I think Ikea would offer the most for your DD. Their prices are decent, they have big bedding and kitchenware sections, and it’s in one place vs running in all different directions. You can also shop ahead of time and just pick it all up, which would save a ton of time.
And don’t forget Amazon for ease. Their prices can be all over the place, but it’s easy.

Ikea are in the process of opening a store in Brighton. Current date is Autumn 2024, no exact date yet. According to the Ikea site the nearest store to Brighton atm is Croydon, South London.
I don't know how the university accommodation handles Amazon delivery but it worth noting you can arrange collection at shops and post offices local to your address if you won't be around to take delivery. Gives a bit of flexibility around her class schedule.
What type of support does the university provide for non UK students? Like registering for a doctor and dentist?

Thank you so much for all of this info, and all of the well-wishes <3 I have written down a list of shops and what they would offer. We are spending a few days there together, and the plan is to buy most of the stuff she will need while I am there. We'll definitely hit all of the shops mentioned! I see I am not the only one having a kid move out this fall, and I wish us all the best! My heart is sort of hurting about this at the moment, but I'm also VERY excited for this new chapter in her life. If something was to happen, I would be able to be there in 6-8 hours (depending on flights), so it's not too bad. She will be home every Christmas, Easter and summer. So we will see her regularly, and she should be able to use her dentist and doctor back home during those breaks. I will probably be the most annoying mother at the student housing office the days we are there, because I am an over-planner and need to know EVERYTHING Thanks again, and keep the suggestions coming if you have good tips that hasn't been mentioned yet! I LOVE the Peas <3

You can get to her faster than I could rainangel, and I'm on the same land mass! I hope she has a great time. What is she studying?

It is a political science degree.

Thanks again, and keep the suggestions coming if you have good tips that hasn't been mentioned yet! I LOVE the Peas <3 Are you on Facebook at all? I found a parent group for my kids school and it has been an invaluable source of information as we packed her up to go. You can post anonymously as well, which I have found helpful. I've seen questions from financial aid to which Aldi is the best (that one was me).

Not a UK Pea, but a US Pea who moved my DD to a dorm in the UK last year for her Master's degree.
A shop called Poundland was good for household basics, cleaning supplies, kitchen utensils, etc. We bought some bedding and electronics at Atkinson's Department Store, but that may be unique to Sheffield. A few things we got from Primark. We found everything else she needed in little shops in the main shopping district.
It's too bad Sheffield is so far from Brighton--my DD is heading home in 3 weeks and will have to donate most of what she purchased.

Was the nudist beach your favourite? Hahaha I didn't know there was one! We had a day out to Brighton when the girls were young and DD ran up a dune to look over to the sea and came hurtling back down, eyes wide in shock
