I made the move to an iMac just over a week ago. I'm LOVING how smoothly I can air drop cake sketches from my ipad to the new system (vs emailing them to my laptop, then downloading, then uploading to my CRM).
I have all my photos in folders (based on styled shoots & pro photographer wedding shots) - sadly when I use an upload link in one of my programs it lumps them all in one group - but I CAN drag & drop from one folder to the upload spot, so that's amazing. Sadly, it did the same on my phone & iPad, so I've had to turn iCloud off on those so I don't have 4000 photos just lumped on my phone lol.
But updates - do you do them as soon as you see them? Wait on it a bit? I'm used to the phone & ipad updates and doing them when they show up in the system app. And my laptop did them automatically with Windows stuff, so I never paid attention. Do I just carry on and do them when they appear?

I’m not prompt with any of my iOS updates so I’ll be interested in responses.
i do have a different update question though. My 2019 iMac is running Mac OS Monterey. I have an update to update to Mac OS Sonoma. I had a lot of trouble updating to Monterey. If I recall correctly, when I clicked on it, it downloaded the update but didn’t install it. I “updated” it a couple times with the same results. Finally I found a video that walked me thru steps to update and it finally worked.
Can anyone point me in the direction of how to properly and completely update to Sonoma?

I’ve never updated my MacBook. So either I’m running on 2022 IOS or the magical Apple Fairy does it while I’m asleep (let’s hope for the last one).

Can anyone point me in the direction of how to properly and completely update to Sonoma? On my Mac, I click on the apple icon in the upper left corner, then go to "system settings". It will tell you if you have any updates available. I actually have one right now, but I'll do it later. I click on "software update available". It then tells me what is available and there is an "update now" button. Click on that and let the computer do its thing. I tend to let my devices do automatic updates. The issue is that sometimes at night, when the updates happen, the wi-fi connection goes out and my devices can't update. Or, my devices, like the ipad needs to be hook up to power to update and I forget to plug it in. So like the Mac I have, it is not updated because probably the wi-fi went out when it wanted to update. I can do it manually now if I want to.

I usually wait a day or two before updating. That way, any major bugs in the update have been dealt with before they affect me.
As for the Photo question, I’d ask Apple about that. I don’t have that issue, but I never started with an android or PC with my photos. All of my photos that date back before Photos or iPhoto are still on a separate hard drive.

Set it up to do it automatically! It's one less thing to think about!

My MacBook and iPhone are set to do the updates automatically overnight as long as the devices are plugged in. So yeah, they get updated straight away.

I update automatically. If there is a bug in the software, it generally isn't anything I am using or noticing and the update of the update just magically takes care of it. I have mine set to automatic as well.

I do not allow automatic updates on my Mac. Security updates should be installed promptly as soon as they're available, but I don't want my OS pulled out from under me without any warning. Many of the recent iterations have been half-baked and I'd rather let them cook an extra 6-12 months before making the jump myself. Also gives some time for any glaring issues to be well known from a power-user's perspective, and any potential software incompatibilities.
If you're coming from an iOS environment or not particularly tech savvy then automatic updates are fine.
