My very well loved Purple Cows paper trimmer has decided it will no longer cut a clean line and will instead chew up paper. I've tried cutting foil several times to sharpen the blade, but it's not helping. I guess it's lived a good life- husband bought it for me at Costco about 20 years ago. Since they're no longer available I'm looking for suggestions on which paper cutters carmdmakers love.

It looks like purple Cow offered rotary and guillotine style trimmers; not sure which you had.
I currently have three:
A lightweight self-sharpening 12” guillotine Fiskars which may only be available from Club Scrap.
The 9” Fiskars triple-track card making.
The Tim Holtz 12” track-style Precision Trimmer.
I like all of them well enough. The little Fiskars is clearly most portable and compact. The scoring blade works well. It can’t cut 12” paper or even letter size into top-fold 11x4.25 bases, but is the best to keep on the desk once the main cutting is done for incidental trimming or for bringing on the go.
Which 12” I reach for at a given time depends on a few factors. Any sketch instructions written by Tricia at CS will be designed for that trimmer, so that’s a no-brainer. When I design a batch=project, often think of my cuts that way as well. Sketches from Stampin’ Up demonstrators, including Crafty Al’s Sheet-load of Cards, tend to work better for a track style trimmer, so I grab the TH. It’s also more compact and portable than the guillotine, so if I’m leaving home and working on a project where I need to make longer cuts, that’s what I take. Its scoring blade kind of sucks, though. It also seems to have more issues than my little Fiskars with the track clogging and needing to be cleaned out.

I have sadly concluded that there are no really good paper trimmers out there. My Tim Holtz guillotine are ok. I've tried one of this rotary trimmers and gave it away after a week.

Good point, jill8909…the other factor affecting which trimmer I reach for on a given day is “not the one that most recently pissed me off”!

I have two I would recommend. The CARL which i think I got at staples or the cutter Pillar
I like a rotary blade over the straight blade.

I have been around the block with paper trimmers over the last year or so. My office/craft space is multi-purpose so I do not have room for large guillotine or rotary trimmer to sit out. I need one that can pop into a drawer easy-peasy.
* I had a 12" Fiskars Sure-cut (the one with the wire). Love it but it eats through blades more quickly than I'd like. I have kept it for taking with me when I craft with others. * Then I bought a Tonic Precisions 12" and it also eats through blades. <---- if anyone wants to purchase mine or my friend's for $10 each (retail is $35) + shipping LMK. * When the Tonic rotary went on sale at 50% off a couple of months ago, I bought one. LOVE it! That said, the markings on it make it difficult for me to make tiny (1/16" - 1/8") cuts. So, I use the Tonic rotary for 1/4" or larger cuts, but then bought the 9" Fiskars Sure-cut for small cuts. It stays out on my desk when I'm crafting.
I think I have finally found my solution (fingers crossed). Good luck with your decision!

Dahle rotary trimmer is a workhorse. I use this to cut card bases & larger pieces of paper. Anything under 8" I use a small Tonic guillotine that sits on my craft desk.

Thank you for all the suggestions. It sounds like there are a lot of different factors in each person's preference.
The trimmer I have had a guillotine on one side and rotary on the other, but I never used the rotary side.
I'm interested in the Tim Holtz one, but I haven't been very happy with the small one (I think 6 or 8 inch?) I recently purchased.
To make it even more fun, my old Big Shot is going out. Thinking about the Platinum 6. Decisions decisions.....

This is the Fiskars guillotine from CS. I’ve searched for the model number on Fiskars web site and not found it. It seems almost like Fiskars discontinued it for retail and produces it only for CS now. It is a great trimmer. Every now and again I have small issue with it and CS gives great troubleshooting advice. My craft space is multipurpose. Any guillotine trimmer is bulky and somewhat tricky to store, but this one is lightweight enough to make it easy to pick and move from storage to desk and back.

I had or still have that purple cow one. I'll have to find it and give it a try , I remember not loving it. I have difficulty with guillotine style trimmers. My wrist starts to hurt. Love my SU paper trimmer but the blade wears out really fast with my heavier cardstocks so I might need to check out Ryann's suggestion. Amazon have multiple ones with different prices. Which one do you have?

Another Creative Memories rotary trimmer lover here. I am still on my original blade that I purchased 2 years ago. First convention I'd been too in many years in Oct '22. I wore out many Cutterpillar trimmers.
Pluses--Multiple blades for scoring, perforating, trimming; replaceable cutting mat; that can all be stored on the BACK of the trimmer.
Minus--not cheap, but seems built to last; not super easy to pack for crops but doable.

Me too… I have the one with the different cartridges and I also just bought their photo trimmer. It’s a small guillotine like cutter
