Zee’s Ohio house thread brought up the idea of haunted houses. I commented that I’m not sure such a thing really exists, and that is probably because I have no personal experience of being in one. Have you personally been in a house that you are fairly sure was haunted? If so, what did you experience?

One of my dd and her dh bought their first house 20 ish years ago. It was during a housing boom in our area, and houses were going quick. The house they bought was supposedly haunted. They had to sign papers that they were aware of that possibility. The house really was not that old. Maybe 70s. And they were somewhat disappointed that the house was not haunted. At least to their knowledge.

No, I've never experienced anything I would consider haunted in my lifetime.

No, I've never experienced anything I would consider haunted in my lifetime. Yeah, pretty much this. I’ve heard houses creak, but I attribute that to settling. I’ve heard what I thought was a voice, but it didn’t scare me and I assumed it was just my imagination. Now, if something happened over and over again, I may wonder, but so far, knock on wood, nothing like that.

Yes, I've lived and spent a great deal of time in, several old homes, and they can definitely tend to be noisy in their own right. And even our last home, built in 1989 was starting to creak here & there by the time we left it. And old houses also tend to behave differently in terms of outside noises & reflections than one might be used to if they are used to newer homes, as well.

Nope - but I'm not arrogant enough to think that things can't be haunted. there's lots of things we can't see...

This is one of the things that I noticed when buying my house here in Oregon, I knew the owner’s husband had passed, which was why she was selling and moving to be near her daughter. I asked my realtor if he passed in this house. She said she didn’t know.
In California, we were required to list if anyone had died in the home we were selling. I only knew that because I had mentioned to my realtor that my mom had been living with me. He asked if she had passed in the home. I thought it was a weird question. I said no, she had been visiting my sister when she died. He said that we would have had to notify the buyer if she had died in my house. I find that to be a really unusual requirement. Curious, I looked it up. You have to volunteer the information if the death occurred during the previous 3 years. And you have to divulge any death, no matter how many years ago it happened, if the buyer asks you.
I wonder if the requirement has anything to do with someone being afraid the house would be haunted.
I did learn from my neighbor that the husband passed while they were in their other home. They stayed in Oregon during the summer and Arizona during the winter. This house was built in the late 60s, and has always been a 55 and over retirement community, so I assume that there must have been someone that has died here during the years this house has been here.
Is notifying a new owner whether anyone has died in your home a requirement in your state?

Now, everything I said aside, we do joke that we have "Lady Lily of the Hall" who guards the house. But that's based entirely upon an old print of a woman holding a lily that's been in this house through several owners, now, and now hangs in the 2nd floor hallway. There's been absolutely no indication of any actual spirit hanging about in the hall or anywhere else. We don't know her actual name, so we dubbed her Lady Lily based on the flower. We figure if we can't call her by her actual name, we can at least give her a title to try to make up for it.

When I was in elementary school my Mom insisted we had Poltergeists. We had a large shelving unit bolted to our wall in the living room and many times items were knocked down without anyone hearing anything.

We also joke that the dining room hutch is haunted because the doors eventually open and things move around inside just enough that eventually they start clinking into one another as you walk by. But of course, all of those things are down to the age of both the hutch and the house, the fact that the floor isn't level, and several of the residents of our house are not exactly gingerly as they walk through that room. And due to the layout of the house we all walk through the dining room many, many times all day long. But again, no one actually thinks anything is haunted. We just gently rearrange the stemware every so often, and reclose the doors--but for fun, we blame the ghost for giving us that extra chore. So if by any chance there are any spirits lingering about, they seem to have a decent sense of humor about our jokes. But truly, I imagine they'd grow weary of hearing them if they were here, so either they are not here or they have what I imagine would be a rather frustrating inability to indicate their annoyance with us.

When I was looking at houses back in 2007 there was a gorgeous old house in terrific shape overlooking the Mississippi but it was in what is now a pretty rough neighborhood.
I'm not sure if that colored my feelings about the house itself, but it just had bad energy. I passed for that reason and for the drunks and addicts literally sprawled out on the lawn next door.

I've talked about this on the board. Let me preface this by telling you that I'm one of the most skeptical people on earth. I managed a very haunted store when I was young. I was never scared, though. I was quite annoyed at times, because the spirits would cause problems.
My district manager hated coming to that store and my boss, the area manager would not come to the store unless she absolutely had to. I had lots of stuff happen and heard things, too. So, did my co-workers. At first, I doubted myself. One day my area manager's mom called, because her daughter was coming in that day. I finally asked if her daughter had ever mentioned anything about the store. Her mother, said that I shouldn't mention the ghosts, because that would terrify her daughter. That's when I realized that I wasn't imagining things. Then I asked one of my employees and she told me that she hated working nights, because the ghosts would act up.
So, yup. I've had a haunting and while I don't recommend it, it wasn't scary to me, just weird. If I had to live w/it I would sell my house.

Do you think the entities were trying to scare people or that they just happened to exist in the same building and you could hear them, somewhat like upstairs neighbors? Did you see things moving around?

Nope - but I'm not arrogant enough to think that things can't be haunted. there's lots of things we can't see... Yeah, I've never had a definite moment in a home where I thought it's haunted. I did have a weird experience at a cemetery that's hard to explain. It was a small town. I was sitting in my van with the window down; no radio on. I heard what sounded like a group of people conversing. Like some large get together, but no one was there. There were only a couple of homes across the street. The park, not too far away was empty when I left. Nothing else was going on.
I know that sounds crazy.
Curious, I looked it up. You have to volunteer the information if the death occurred during the previous 3 years. And you have to divulge any death, no matter how many years ago it happened, if the buyer asks you. There are famous murder houses or celebrity homes in California. I can see why it would be a concern if it ends up being one of the more well known ones where you get lots of looks or creepy people coming to your door.

Do you think the entities were trying to scare people or that they just happened to exist in the same building and you could hear them, somewhat like upstairs neighbors? Did you see things moving around? I'll list a few incidents. When I'd get to the store in the am I would hear a women screaming and a man w/a maniacal laugh. One of my employees used to hear a 5 year old boy crying.
I was always alone in the am's. The store was small and no one else came in until the afternoon. So, one day I was going to count the drawer. I had the deposit bag and when I took the cash out there was a crisp 5 dollar bill that was a bit above the rest of the cash. I had to go to the bathroom and when I got back I counted that stupid cash 3 times and the $5 was missing. Later that am I was back on the potty(sorry folks) and when I stood up the $5 bill was half on and half off of a shelf in the bathroom.
Next incident, again in the bathroom. I moved the vacuum out of the way so that I could get into the bathroom. That was also a storage room, despite having a big back room. So, I closed the door and when I opened it the vacuum was right in my face.
I never saw anything actually move, but things moved when I wasn't looking. Another time I was at my desk doing some paperwork before we opened. We had a long ladder and it was on the left side of the back room. I noticed it and went back to my paperwork. When I got up from my desk the ladder was on the right side of the room.
There was one spot in the back room and I would sit there and eat my lunch. I would hear opera music and there was a huge chill that would move back and forth. It was a creepy chill.
When my district manager was there shelves would almost fall on her head. Racks of clothes would fall down when she approached. Whatever was there hated her and wanted her to leave. I always had a mess to clean up when she left. She wouldn't stay. One time a shelf fell down on her and she caught it and left soon after that. She refused to stay and help put it back. When I asked her about ghosts she got really angry and wouldn't discuss it.
Finally, one day I'd had it, because it was hard to open the store in the mornings with the shenanigans. So, I did the stupid, but I guess correct thing. I talked to it or them and explained that I was just doing my job. I apologized for intruding on their space and thanked it/them for allowing me to work there w/o harm. Then I threatened it by letting it know that I'm human and that I would do everything possible to get rid of the spirits unless it left me alone. After that I didn't have anymore issues.
When I left that store I was relieved. It was closed soon after that. Years later I looked up that area of the city. It was a huge city and sure enough there lots of hauntings and stuff reported.
Nighty night.

Not a house, but we stayed in Room 242 of the Hotel Congress in Tucson which unbeknownst to me at the time of booking was believed to be haunted by the lady in the white dress. Not sure if it was the alcohol or the lady in the dress, but it was a pretty spooky room!

So...good timing. My husband is in Montana this week on a work thing (leadership bonding). They are staying at The Sacajawea Hotel and when they got there he told me it was supposed to be haunted. First two nights nothing, then last night one of the other guys in his group was woken up at 2am by a sliding noise. He suitcase had been moved to the other side of his room. Before last night my husband would have told you that it wasn't haunted but now he is 100% sure it is. He is also looking forward to getting out of that place tomorrow!

We've had experiences in the house we live in. Phantom smells (cologne, cigarette smoke) and movement of items. Ex: A pair of jeans of new jeans was missing. We always fold and put away jeans but they were no where to be found. We thought we may have accidentally given them away with some other clothes and the matter was forgotten. About 3 months later, the closet door was opened and all the clothes were pushed to the side except hanging in the middle was those new jeans. Stuff like that. We've never been scared, more amused and often talk to our ghost when something goes missing or has been moved and ask them to return it or stop it and the missing item will always show up a few days later in some weird random place. We then thank the ghost for returning it. It may seems silly and some may not believe it, but we do, so I guess that's all that matters.

I don't say it was a ghost, but we did have some instances of weird things that happened in one home. We'd hear things, had a few things moved, I had something wake me up one night by pushing down on my shoulder. I thought it was one of our DDs but when I opened my eyes nothing was there.
The weirdest thing to me was when my shoes moved. I came home one night and walked to the hallway table (open concept home, so it had a wide hall/central area) and took off my shoes. I did it neatly by the table and then walked down the front foyer to a room my DH was sitting in to talk to him. He got up and left to go to our bedroom. I stayed a moment longer to pet the dog and then picked her up to take her to bed. I turned to walk down the front foyer towards the bedroom and my shoes were sitting in the middle of that hallway instead of where I had left them. They were sitting crossed over each other, forming a T shape. I stared at them and then slowly walked to the bedroom to ask DH if he had moved my shoes to there. He had no idea what I was talking about. He didn't do it, I didn't do it, but there they were.
