I used to take my gardening tools to a little shop near my house to be sharpened once or twice a year, depending on how much use the tool received. It was run by the sweetest old man and he always did a great job of sharpening the lawn mower blades and my pruning and trimming tools. I should have had everything done before the move so that they were in top shape for the new house, but didn’t even think of it.
I haven’t found a place in my new area yet. I am finding places that you can mail your stuff to them, but that makes me nervous. Plus, I don’t want to be without them for that long. I plan on asking at the local garden store, thinking they may offer the service at their store or can tell me where to go. My other thought is to just go ahead and order something off Amazon to sharpen them myself.
I have so many bushes that need major trimming back in my yard and my shears are just not up to the task. My anvil loppers are newer and I had purchased a replacement blade when I bought them so they are getting a lot of use here but should be fine for this year. It is my shears that really need sharpening. Do you sharpen your garden tools yourself at home and can you recommend a tool to purchase? Amazon has several and they are all over the place as far as pricing. I just want something that is reliable and does a good job. Can anyone make a recommendation?

Do you have an Ace Hardware or other small hardware store near you? We have one in a small town near us and they offer sharpening services. If you find out when the sharpening guy works, you can minimize your down time.

Did you search under lawn mower repair? Also ask at local hardware stores. Hope you find something local you like!

In my area there are people who travel around and do sharpening once or twice a month at a local spot. One guy goes to this one store the first Thursday of the month, a garden shop had someone come in once a month, and the weekly farmers’ market has someone there. Ask around your local stores.

There is an Ace hardware in Salem, which is about half an hour away. There is also a Do it Best Hardware here in town that is a small, very Mom and Pop feeling store. I have had really good luck finding things there. I needed to replace the shower handle that broke the very first week of owning this house. I tried Lowe’s and Home Depot, and even ordered one that looked like it was correct through Amazon. None of them fit. I took the broken bits in with me to the little Do it Best store. A man asked what I needed as I walked in the door. I told him I was looking for a handle for an older shower and explained my attempts to buy one at the other stores that looked correct but didn’t fit. He asked if I lived in the golf retirement community and I said I did. He immediately went and picked up the handle before I even showed him my broken one. He said he knew which one I needed because all of the homes in the golf community had that same handle and he had assisted many homeowners looking for it in the past. He said they make sure to always keep that style in stock. That is my kind of hardware store. I think I will give them a call tomorrow.

My fabric store has a man that comes once per month to sharpen scissors. He does garden shears if a person brings them in. Check with someone who sharpens scissors.

My fabric store has a man that comes once per month to sharpen scissors. He does garden shears if a person brings them in. Check with someone who sharpens scissors. Joann’s near me in California had a regular schedule for bringing your scissors in to the visiting sharpener person. It never occurred to me to ask about yard tools. I know there is a Joanne’s between my house and Salem. I will give them a call if I strike out with the gardening center and the hardware stores. Thank you!

I’d be really surprised if your little local hardware store doesn’t offer a sharpening service. I’m pretty sure most of the smaller stores in my area still do it.
