Last year for the holidays HA started with Peeking Snowman, Deer, etc. for the holidays, and they've continued with a few more through the year. I think a couple of them are pretty cute, but I haven't made the purchase, mainly because they kind of seem like a one-trick pony and I'd get tired of using them after a bit. Here's a link to them: heroarts.com/search?type=product&q=peekingIf you've used them, what are your thoughts?

I have not. My thoughts are similar to yours. But I am nearly certain that someone on the boards has at least one and has shared a card made with it.

I have the peeking elf one. It's cute but the only thing I don't like is you have to cut it and layer it to use different cardstock.
When you die cut it out, it comes as one layer where you have to handcut the edges if you want to separate it.

I was tempted last year, and watching JMcG use the snowman in a video yesterday got me tempted again, but yeah, there are only so many ways to lay out a card with a peeking character. I’d rather get a normal one and have the option of putting them in different positions. They are cute though. Maybe it would be a fun challenge to see what we already have that could be arranged in a peeking position 🤷🏻♀️

You can always use a larger die of an animal or character, die cut it, put it together, off set it, and snip off the overhang.
I have done that with stamps and stamped images. I especially love to do it with stamps and layer them. I stamp some, create a block with the die cut of the images and then stamp more.

I would never buy a die set like this, because you're right it's a one trick pony.
For the same price you can get a layering animal set that can be posed in a whole bunch of different ways. There's even sets that make multiple critters with a few swappable pieces.
One of the major criteria I have for new buys is the versatility of the set. Even if it's single piece dies, can I use them in interesting ways? There are several sets I've bought just because they had shapes I wanted badly, not caring at all about what it was intended to make!

There are a lot of dies that I think are cute but one one trick ponys for me, even if not for someone else. I only make a handful of Christmas cards . That is why I avoid looking a Christmas stuff. I have to use what I have. These dies are cute though.

I love the winter bear he could be used all year round. Swap the hat and scarf to birthday hats or really anything. And has the least coloring too. I have to have that one. My hubby's nick name is bear.

I'm okay with a one-trick pony if the price point is low enough. I want the reindeer one and will pick it up eventually, but at a discount.
