MIL just gave all of her info to spectrum scammers including her bank account info. The bank has been called to stop transactions and MIL will go to bank on Monday. She's worried about her automatic deposits of SS to new account, but won't SS just send to new account? Is it difficult to get SS transferred to new account? And if scammed, is it difficult to get money back from a bank account without a debit/credit card associated with it as hers is a regular bank account with no credit/debit card?
I want to help her get a credit freeze over the phone, tomorrow. What info will she need and can I do a three-way call with the three credit entities? She does not embrace technology or online transactions easily. Her POA, her daughter, left today for a trip over seas, so I'd like to step in to help. Any advice and info greatly appreciated.

You can place a credit freeze online- you have do do each if the three separately. The bank should open a new account for her. Deposits should still come in and she will have a certain amount of time to notify the depositors of the change. She will need to update all autopayments and order new checks

Credit freezes by phone is possible. They have to freeze your account within 1 day. If you do it by mail, they have 3 days to freeze the account. All 3 must be done separately with phone calls to each company. If you want to do it online for her, you have to have her information available, if she will give it to you.
ETA - Online is the quickest, usually frozen almost immediately.

I have heard stories of banks not returning money or a customer admits to providing account information to scammers, so I would be careful what you say when you call.

Bank accounts aren’t protected the same way that credit cards are. When DH had his wallet stolen in a Paris metro station, the thieves had racked up $20,000 by the time that I logged in to our CC accounts. It was minutes.
I would try to freeze her credit tonight.
Never, never, never give your payment information out to someone who calls you. Call them back, looking up the number yourself. I’m preaching to the choir, I know!

Do you have any information of protection if her bank account is wiped out? Could it happen? Her bank account seems ok right now as daughter called immediately after. I don't have all of her info to get a credit stop online. I'm flying out tomorrow to help. She just had a pace maker put in three days ago and is moving out to us in about three weeks.

I am so sorry. It is so stressful trying to get through this. When DH’s account was hacked, he had to go to the Social Security office to get his payments changed to the new account.

If the bank has shut down the account and cancelled her debit abd credit cards, then nothing more should happen.

www.nerdwallet.com/article/finance/how-to-freeze-creditThis tells you what info you will need. I would think that she would need to contact SS. Contact the local SS office and explain the problem. Have her info ready(copy of a check, driver’s license, SS card)The local office should be able to give guidance on any steps that she needs to take. ETA: Before you contact SS, when you go to the bank, make sure that you get her new checking account number and routing number.. That is Job #1.

www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/08/21/credit-freeze-versus-fraud-alert-social-security-number-breach/After the news of this latest breach, a friend texted me in a panic. “Should I freeze my credit files?” she asked. Yes, you should, according to Brian Krebs, author of the security blog Krebs on Security. This prevents your credit report from being accessed without your permission, making it harder for swindlers to take out loans or open new credit cards in your name. “We don’t have control over this information, so you should exercise what little control you have,” Krebs said. “If you’re really worried about your credit file being compromised, you should just freeze your credit.” When there is a breach, consumers are told, among other steps, to place a fraud alert on their credit files or freeze them. There are pros and cons to both options. Here’s why one is better than the other. Fraud alert A fraud alert is a red flag telling creditors to contact you before new credit is opened in your name or changes are made to existing accounts. You can place this notice on your credit reports if you’re concerned you are or may become a victim of identity theft. Pros: You need to contact only one of the three major credit bureaus to set up an alert — Equifax, Experian or TransUnion. The credit bureau you contact must then notify the others to place an alert on your credit reports. It’s free. A fraud alert does not affect your credit score. The alert lasts one year. If you want to keep it, you have to renew it. Victims of identity theft can keep a fraud alert in place for seven years. To get an extended fraud alert, submit an identity theft report to the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov or file a police report. You can add or remove a fraud alert at any time. You don’t have to remove the alert if you’re shopping for a loan. Cons: It’s easy for folks to forget to renew a fraud alert. With a fraud alert, a lender is supposed to verify your identity before it issues credit. But this doesn’t always happen. “Not all creditors are going to respect that restriction,” Krebs said. “Some of them pull up your credit anyway.”

Your bank will let you know what protections are on the account. This is a good argument for a CC or at least a debit card. I also have a separate banking account so that if I have to pay a bill that way, it only has the exact amount that I need in it. It’s easy enough to transfer money between accounts.
