I'm not usually super into pre-planning albums - and usually decide on layouts as I sort the printed photos.
BUT I'm tackling a 2012 trip to DC my older daughter and DH went on. NONE of the (digital) photos are labelled so that's my current project.
I'm thinking that once they are all labelled - I'll make a plan for the album based on what photos they took - and then order prints based on the plan.
This seems like a lot of work but I'm hoping it'll make actually MAKING the layouts and album easier as I would like to get it done especially since there is ALSO a 2017 DC trip that also hasn't been labelled or printed.

I love making a plan and order all my photos based on the specific size I need.
For trip albums I like to use pocket pages with a 12x12 scattered here and there. If going with pocket pages I recommend sticking to a couple styles that you then repeat for each section/day/event depending on how you are organizing their trip.
For regular planning I print a contact sheet on my computer for each LO, draw my sketch in the empty space and note sizes next to the photo on the contact sheet. Then I batch print all the photos in one order.

I always play out my albums before starting them, if I know the entire album is that same theme. I print the pics I think I will want, and then start to group them however seems fit. It helps me stay on track while making the layouts. Some are single pages, some double, I don't worry about that very much. I make a list of pages, with how many pictures will be on each, but rarely have a sketch or design in mind until I actually start. Once I start actually making the layouts, the process goes much quicker because some of the decision making is already done.

I always try to plan out my big projects. i sort by events or by days usually. planning makes the project less daunting.

I have planned trip albums before I even left. I used to do two of them a year, so it made sense. Maybe just make it a smaller album and pick out the highlights so you have maybe four pages per day.
