If you have a family history of Type 2 diabetes, you have an increased risk of developing Type 2 afterwards. I’ve seen studies with anywhere from 25% to 60% increased risk depending on the population. In 2021, my younger brother (48 at the time) had COVID. This guy is incredibly health conscious, following a healthy diet and exercising regularly. About 8 months after COVID, he was hospitalized with an A1C of 13.3 and a blood sugar reading of about 500. He had a physical the year before with perfectly normal readings for both of these. I had a physical last summer with normal blood sugar and A1C. I am significantly overweight (obese according to BMI), so I get tested for both every year. I had COVID last September. This summer I found myself tired, thirsty, and urinating frequently, so I went for my annual blood work a few weeks earlier. My blood sugar was 396 and my A1C was 13. I can’t prove that this was caused by COVID, but my doctor said a spike like that was unusual given that my diet and activity levels had not changed. My advice to anyone with a family history of Type 2 (which I have) or other risk factors (which I also have) is to be proactive if you have COVID. Start testing your blood weekly to pick up any increases. You don’t need a prescription to get a monitor—I bought this one at Walmart for my daughter who just finished her 3rd round of COVID: www.walmart.com/ip/352439457. It’s only $20 with enough test strips for a year—you only need to buy additional lancets that cost about$2. If I had started testing weekly last winter, I would have caught the problem long before it got this bad. On the plus side, after 4 weeks on Mounjaro and watching my carbs, my blood sugar has dropped to 155. I won’t know how I’m doing with my A1C until they test for it again in 2 months.

My wholly un-scientific take? It seems Type 2 is acting similar to Type 1. Type 1 gets kicked off in many people with an illness, for my DD and Niece it was the flu. Just based on what I know of Type 1 I’m willing to bet you and your brother were going to manifest with Type 2, it was just a matter of what pushed it forward.
I can remember at the beginning of Covid reading anecdotal stories of higher incidence of Type 1 in children with Covid. Made complete sense to me, but they sure made the headlines seem dire and scary when you could write the exact same headline with several childhood illnesses
Glad your’s was caught early. That’s a wonderful drop in your blood sugar. Bet your AIC will reflect it as well.
