I started taking Metformin back in late June. The Dr. had me work up to the 2000mg daily in small increments. I am now on the full 2000mg (1000 am and 1000pm) for 2 weeks. I am taking with a meal but it is still causing major digestive tract issues and I'm wondering if I should ask the doctor to switch me to the extended release formula of the medication. I'm wondering if anyone here took the regular, like me and had issues but then switched to the ER and had less side effects? I'm a substitute teacher and I am afraid to go to work. I can't just run to the bathroom whenever I need to, which is several times a day right now (sorry, TMI). Plus, it's making my stomach nauseous like I have a stomach bug and I just hate the idea of having to live like this. Wanted to get others experiences before I approach the dr. Thanks!

I had exactly the same experience! After a couple weeks, I asked my dr to switch me to the extended release tablets. I also take 1000 mg twice daily. It was like night and day. I take the tablets now with no gastro issues. Along with the meds, and losing 50 lbs, my A1C dropped from 7.7 to 5.3.

FWIW, DH took it for a few years. His kidneys began to fail. Kidney doctor told him that no one says Metformin causes kidney problems, but if there are any troubles, to get off the Metformin immediately. That doctor went on to say if he became diabetic he would never take Metformin, but would go straight to taking insulin. DH is on insulin now...and has been for about 10 years.
I would have my kidney function checked often if you use Metformin.

The ER version is easier on the GI system - watching what I'm eating helped also...too many fat/carbs ends up with unpleasant consequences.
I've been on it for 10+ years - kidneys is one of the things they check on my quarterly lab work (not sure if because of metformin or because I have other risk factors) and so far, no problems. I, however, am one of the about 20% of metformin users who have a B12 deficiency -probably due to absorption issues. So I have to supplement that and get occasional shots.

My GP prescribed me metformin about 3 weeks ago if I wanted to take it for weight loss. Your symptoms are exactly why I am not going to take it. (I have lost 9 lbs in 3 weeks so I am doing well losing weight another way).

He does a lot better than when he took regular metformin.... he takes other medications not just the metformin..

I don't recall if I ever made it to the full dose, but I switched very quickly. It.took one time of such severe pain while I was at work and that was it for me. Extended release is fine for me.

I took metformin er for years and it always caused diarrhea for me. Try it, but if it does, don’t wait as long as I did to ask for a different medication. The Dr. switched me to jardiance and it was so much better for me. My dh has taken metformin er for years and has no problems with it.

I couldn't take it.. I was in the bathroom ALL the time. My mom takes it with no problems though. I did insulin for a bit, but then started Mounjaro (however you spell it).. and that was the game changer.

I took regular Metformin 2x a day and was miserable with nausea. My doctor switched me to Metformin ER at night and I have no issues with it. It has made a huge difference.
I hope your doctor will let you give it a try.

I had the same issues in the beginning. It did lessen after a few weeks.
I will say what I eat makes a difference. Lots of fat/fried foods will still give me tummy troubles. I took my kiddo to Red Robin last night and had a burger (no bun) but still ate some fries. It was a fast drive home. LOL
I also take Atrantil. You can get it online or Amazon. I do 2 in the morning and evening. Helps quite a bit. In the beginning I was taking activated charcoal as well, but that tends to bind me up, so I try to be very sparingly with that.

I have been on Metformin 1000 2X daily for 10 years w/ no side effects. Maybe because I started out with 1000 2X daily for 8 years. Not sverybody has the same tolerance for meds.
