I know this is really minor, but it is bugging me a great deal because it is still happening. I have been noticing for the past several months that there are odd things going on in my streaming accounts and I am wondering if it is just mine. You know how there is a red line that runs underneath of an episode that you have already viewed? I keep finding these on shows that I have no memory of watching. I have even tried to view a few of these episodes from the beginning to see if it refreshes my memory. Nope. These are shows that I have not watched.
My first reaction was to change all of my passwords. Although, I live alone and have never given anyone any of my passwords to Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon. I still keep coming across shows that look like I have already seen a few episodes when I know I have not. And my passwords are quite difficult and different for all three of those services, and the likelihood that anyone has cracked even one is very small. All three? Impossible.
The only thing that I have come up with as a possible reason for this is that I fell asleep while watching some program and it automatically advanced into the next available show without me clicking on it. I don’t know if that is possible, but it is the only viable reason that I have come up with so far.
And I have a habit of always adding a series to the “my list” section because I will often watch a few episodes of something, then need a change and watch something else, but usually returning to watch the next episode from where I had left off a few nights before.
For example, my friend strongly recommended that I watch the Vikings series on Netflix. He kept pushing me to do it because he wanted to talk to me about the various episodes. I actually had to upgrade my plan to another level to give me access to that series, but I did so because he was so adamant that I would enjoy it. There are six seasons and up to 20 episodes per season, so this is going to take me some time to complete.
Well, I did enjoy it in the beginning, but this isn’t really a show that I can binge multiple episodes at a time because it is so terribly violent. Really, really violent. I can usually only watch one per evening, then I need to switch to something light so that I can fall asleep without dreaming of bloody killings. I had no idea that the Vikings were that bloodthirsty of a people. And the fastest way for me to return to a series like this that I am watching sporadically is to go to the “my list” tab. Otherwise, several new things have popped up and I can’t find the program I am looking for without a lot of scrolling and hunting.
And then I began to notice that when there were shows where a few episodes had been watched with no memory of them, I had not clicked the “my list” option. I have been doing that for years, so that was a telltale sign that it really wasn’t me watching these shows.
I know this isn’t a big deal and I can just begin at the first episode if it actually IS something that I want to watch, so there is no harm done. Well, other than me thinking I am losing my mind a bit. And at my age, I already do things like enter a room and forget what I went there to get and have to return to where I started to realize what I was actually looking for. I know that is quite common and it doesn’t happen to me all that often.
I saw it happen with my mom and she was as sharp as could be. And mine seems to occur most often when I am listening to an Audible book as I am working and getting engrossed in the storyline. The thought that I may possibly have watched multiple episodes of a show and can’t remember a single scene is very worrisome. I watched my ex husband’s mom develop Alzheimer’s and it was horrible for all of us. I think the fear of that happening to me is occasionally in the very back of my mind.
I haven’t yet tested out the theory that I fell asleep and a new show started playing automatically. The only other answer is that I have a ghost living with me, although we don’t always share the same taste in movies.
Has anyone else had this happen to them with any of their streaming services?

Hmmmm I Know you changed your passwords, BUT could you force a log out of all devices? Like Netflix does? That way even if they are cached in and using your old PW, they are forcibly logged out and the only way to get back in is to sign in with the new PW.

Are the "watched but not-watched" shows all on one streaming service or it happening on all of the ones you subscribe to?

Start keeping a complete list of what you watch.

Also, with YouTube on an actual computer, I've accidentally left the cursor on a preview for something then moved to a different tab and YouTube marks that I've watched a good portion of the video I had the cursor on. I more often find my streaming services "forget" I've viewed something more than saying I've watched them when I haven't, though. Especially is I swap back and forth between devices watching the same streaming service. So I'm afraid I don't have any ideas about the rest of what you described.

I am only subscribed to the three that I listed and it has happened on all three services. That was what concerned me. There is no way anyone could guess all three different passwords.

Is autoplay on or off? I have mine off.
I agree to force a log out of all devices, just in case, and turn off autoplay so it won't automatically play any other episodes.
No, I haven't had this happen, but I know I've come across people still logged into their Netflix at a VRBO and I hope they enjoyed seeing all the shows I watched under their accounts 🤭 (I have my own account, but they left it logged in, so whatever)
ETA is your Wi-Fi secure as well? With a strong password?

Ok, so my falling asleep scenario has happened to you too? That makes me feel much better. I tend to watch my iPad to fall asleep to almost every night. That isn’t a good practice, I know, but my sleep schedule is weird and if I am going to deal with insomnia all night, I may as well watch movies. If I do fall asleep, the first time I wake to use the bathroom or roll over, I turn the iPad off.

Yes, at first I didn't realize it, but I was watching a show, and started at the point the streaming service was telling me was where I left off, and I no idea what was happening. Then I remembered my impromptu nap. Turns out I slept through the end of one episode, and entire next episode, and the beginning of a 3rd!

Find where the log out all devices spot is. If the other devices don't get logged out, then you changing your password doesn't matter. For example, I and my 2 DDs have Netflix log ins under one account. If I change my password it doesn't effect them. They have their own name and password. If I logged out all devices they wouldn't be able to watch.

Do you choose “log out of all devices” or just log out? You may have an older device you forgot about or maybe you used your account at a friends house and they’re still using it. My vote is you fell asleep or left the room for a while and missed an episode. That’s what happens to me

At least I think it is. I know when I was installing my security system at this house that I had to allow access to my Wi-Fi for the cameras to link up to the main base of the security system. And in order to replace a camera’s battery, I have to bring the camera back inside the house and set it right next to the base systems in order to establish a link again. It cannot be done from the camera’s installed position on the exterior of the house, so I figure the Wi-Fi signal is not very strong once I walk outside the house. I guess that is good so that it can’t be hacked into.

Ok, I just turned off the auto play feature. I didn’t realize that was an option. I can understand that by leaving auto play selected, it will run through the whole series if I don’t stop it. But it seems odd that it would automatically just move on to play another movie all together, but I guess it does. And I sometimes get the message asking if I am still there watching and I have to choose yes or it will log me out. I can’t recall which service that happens on or if it is all of them.

Yes, I'm watching Hulu right now (the only service I left autoplay on) and I played a movie on TCM. Now it's just randomly playing other movies.

I had an issue with Netflix earlier this year where someone took over my account. In the beginning I noticed the same thing you are. Red lines indicated I watched shows I'd never watched. I thought it was weird but didn't think too much of it since I often fall asleep watching tv. Then one day I went to watch and I had been logged out and my password had been changed. I used the "forgot my password" option to get back in and noticed the language settings were changed to Spanish and it said I had no active subscription. I had to call Netflix and verify the card they use for payment and they restored my account to me. They said this is a common occurrence.
So if I were you I would find the option to log out all devices and change your password and be ready for future troubles.

Just logging out and changing passwords won't necessarily log out someone who has hacked your password. You can have a new one, and need to use that new one because you have changed it - but if you don't do a 'log out of all devices' they can still be using your old password because they have not logged out of the session.

We have left our Netflix account on at a vrbo...
Noticed red lines on stuff we werent watching... it had shows i would never watch under continue watching...
Then 1 day all the names had been changed... so i logged all devices off...
Reset my name and dh... i figured we mustve left it logged in somewhere we had stayed....

We have definitely had the same issue with shows looking like we’ve watched, or started watching it. It’s bizarre, for sure!

I've had that happen on autoplay. It's moved forward into episodes I haven't seen yet.
