When I wss in high school you got the mum from your boyfriend and he got it made from him mom sister or whoever...lots of crafty moms sell them now on fb swap n sell...
When my kids where in high school i made mums for sons n nephews gf... i made garters for dds bfs...
I dont know if that is still how you get them.. i can not imagine making the super huge hung around the neck mums... ours where just plain big flowers with a bear in the middle or football helmet or stuff...
The hobby lobby or michaels in each city will usually carry all the colors for local schools... you just buy what you want n hot glue and staple til you got something you like... the fuller the better....
We also had best friend garters that we wore... lol we were ridiculous...
But you wear it all day to school... some teachers made you tape the bells... pep rally and football game!!! Them you get into a prom dress for the homecoming dance
Also for our local schools the Thursday before is parade and bonfire.. so you would also wear your mum in the parade on a float of your chosen elective... or march if your were a band member... also the jr high that feeds into your high school was in the homecoming parade...
The parade will end at the bonfire field... most people would put mums n garters in cars and not wear them to the bonfire.... it would get a little chaotic...

I went to a small town public high school in Texas in the 80’s. Maybe because we didn’t have a big crafty store (HL or Michaels) nearby, but all our mums were made by the local florists. There were two or three in town and I’m pretty sure that homecoming weekend was a BIG part of their autumn/fall revenue!!

I have no idea what this is about, as I can't see the link (Access Denied), and I don't know any kids called Stanley. Mini-mums? As in young mothers? This Brit is truly confused.

For the most part I get what they're talking about or have heard it on different Brit shows, but a couple times I had no idea what the young people slang was.

it is so irritating to me. I get all excited that someone likes/wants to talk hockey and then ... Nope Also, when one googles Stanley Cup, Lord Stanley's Cup should be yhe image one sees. Slight hijack, my YAs came home from a trivia night and asked me one of the questions. I'm paraphrasing, but something like "which major league sports championship is named after British nobility" and would have been disappointed if I hadn't named Lord Stanley and his cup. I have no idea what this is about, as I can't see the link (Access Denied), and I don't know any kids called Stanley. Mini-mums? As in young mothers? This Brit is truly confused. This is my understanding only. In Texas, during high school Homecoming events (football game, dance, etc.) girls wear a "corsage" made of ribbons, flowers, stuffed animals, etc., in their school colors to school that day. They have grown in size over the years as everything is bigger in Texas and if you are 5' tall you run the risk of dragging the streaming ribbons on the ground and/or tripping over them from what I see. This year, mini-mums are being made to decorate coffee/water bottles. Stanley is currently the most popular brand. ETA A search for "Texas homecoming mums" should bring up images for you.

Those are adorable! Ive grown to love Mum-culture as my kids aged, maybe because I have boys and didn’t get to participate in many girly floral things.
A modern part of the tradtion is Mums are often purchased by families ,or the girls themselves, not just those with dates. My guess is counselors and teachers have a few on hand if they notice someone feeling left out. Lately Ive noticed used ones being given away or sold on FB marketplace so they can be recycled for someone new and all the glittery plastic gets another life.
Our town has an actual Mum retail shop that services schools in other cities too. You can shop for Mum supplies or have one custom made. They lease an Aldi's size space in a strip mall all year, and only operate in the fall. My kids' high school drill team also runs a seasonal mum shop, I assume other high schools do too. There are color codes for the grades
I’m from the era of real mum corsages, I’m surprised how this has grown on me. The girls (and guys) will have some cringe worthy photos to show future generations.

These are super cute. When my kids were in HS, one year i made one for my senior daughter (senior mums are Next level, although hers was not crazy). Another year I bought the arm band one for my son - his date’s mom had ordered hers. I am glad to be done with it all.
I did make mini mums for scrapbooks for all of our drill team seniors my daughter’s year and that was a lot of fun! I used small prima daisies from the early 2000s with thin rick rack, 1/8 satin ribbons and some other thin ribbon and put a gem in the middle of each flower. They were maybe 3 or 4 inches long - super cute.

I also wanted to add that I'm kind of sad this wasn't a thing in our area. I only know about these from here and from a friend who lives in TX and shared pics of her daughter's mum a few years ago.
I would have went so OVER THE TOP to make one for my DD! She would barely have been able to walk under the weight, the sheer majesty, of the mum I would have created. 💃

High school girls in Texas have a tradition of making giant fake chrysanthemum flowers with the school colors and a lot of glittery personalization to wear for a school football game designated as “homecoming.” They wear them at school and at the pep rally (big all-school cheering session for the football team) and to the game itself, but not to the semi-formal dance that follows. Stanley cups are insulated mugs that come in different colors and are the status symbol du jour for some groups.

It's just a different use of the same words. You say Mom, we say Mum. We would never abbreviate chrysanthemum to "mum". And we have Stanley kn1ves. Not Stanley cups/mugs. I now need to go and Google what those are. Haha!

So, of course I had to google homecoming mums and garters. They are hideous! The Stanley cups are much nicer. Don’t girls wear pretty gowns for homecoming? Because if they do, the huge mums totally hide them. They wear the mums to school that day, the pep rally, and the game. The homecoming dance is different and they do not wear the mums with their dresses to the dance. Ok, that makes more sense to me. Thank you for explaining. Obviously I know nothing about homecoming.
