Please help me find homecoming dress options for my curvy, busty teen girl. She is probably an 18W with a 38 DDD chest and we can't find any options for her to try on in our area. There are a lot of online places to look but we are encountering strict return policies where you only get store credit and not a cash refund.
She is looking for a short dress that she can wear a proper bra with. So many dresses have a corseted back that make bra wearing impossible. So many dresses are made to be worn skin tight and that is just not anything she would love. A fuller skirt is preferable. Stick on cups will not work with her chest size - also her private high school will not allow open backs or midrift showing.
We have found some possible options at Macy's and Dillards online and we will be ordering a few of those. Where can we go locally? I would rather she be able to try things on instead of ordering everything in two different sizes to see what fits - but we will do that if we have to. Amazon has dresses that might work, but we would like other options as well.
This is absolutely heartbreaking for her. She is actively working on being active and eating intuitively and in a healthy manner, but the stores are telling her she is not worthy of a cute dress in her size. Mother of the bride, matronly dresses are all she can find in her size. She wore an old formal of mine last year and looked decent, but I would love to have her find a dress she LOVES. She can't be the only girl with the problem, right?

Do you have a David's Bridal? They carry a lot of semi-formal/formal dresses that aren't necessarily bridesmaids dresses.
Torrid is another option.
We also like CityChic here - they will return to the method of payment but you do have to pay 7.95 shipping for the return.
I believe Nordstrom has free returns as well.
(This was a problem for me back in the late 80s and I feel like girls have so many more options now. My mom made all of my prom and homecoming dresses so I could have something cute that fit. But we've generally been able to find formal/party dresses for my curvy youngest at the places listed above.)
ETA: JCPenney and Kohl's may also have junior plus styles that she will like.

I would also recommend a bridal shop.

I know that Nordstroms has the option to pick up in store. She could go and try things on in the store.

I agree with checking in at a bridal shop. My daughter was quite busty as a teen and I remember the difficulty finding a dress to fit the upper half properly. Our local bridal shop was a godsend as the seamstress was able to start with a larger overall size and take in the waist etc for a lovely fitted look.
Another option is a stretchy fabric that will adjust itself to her curves, perhaps with a high waist to give her shape and flow a bit from there.

My daugther has found some luck at a site called Altared State (I might have the spelling wrong).

My dd had needed plus size formal wear dresses in h.s.
We went with David's bridal, then had the dresses altered to fit her perfectly.
Any bridal shop can do this.

Check Amazon - the have dresses for all types of occasions in all different size ranges. If you do this, make sure you go by inches, and not letter sizing. When ordering online, most people order their regular letter size, and the item ends up way too small.
