I know jury duty is my civic duty blah blah blah. But I fucking hate this crap. Every single year I get called to my "local" courthouse (it's still 30 miles away) and every year I show up and do what I am supposed to. Meanwhile 75% of people I know either have never been called or just don't answer the summons. Nothing ever happens to them. It's frustrating.
Now I have in my hands a jury questionnaire for federal court. Are you freaking kidding me??? The courthouse is 70 miles away and it's in a big city I refuse to drive in. I have a terrible amount of driving anxiety that I battle every day. I do not want to do this. I shouldn't be forced to do this. No defendant would want me on their trial against my will. I guess I will try my hardest to get excused with how I fill out the questionnaire but seriously... why me!
That's it, the end. Please don't feel the need to post your posts about how important jury duty is and why everyone must do it. They don't do it. And the system picks on the people that respond.

I get you! I haven’t had a federal call yet, knock on wood, but I would have to go downtown, pay highway robbery for parking, and fight traffic. I could take the train, but I worry about delays and getting in trouble with the court. I would be a cranky juror.

I absolutely hate jury duty. I think I was called often because I worked for local government / utilities and they knew we got paid in full for jury duty.
Can you get a doctor excuse due to your anixiety? This last time I asked my doctor and she said sure, got up, came back with a letter.
I freaked a bit as I am compromised and sitting with all those people in a jammed pack room full of people scared me for not only myself, but as I am a primary care taker of my elderly mother. I also have bum leg.
Hope you can get out of it.

I think it's BS that they say they will pay for a hotel for people over 80 miles away from the court house. The amount shown doesn't even cover what a night at a hotel would cost first of all. And secondly, of course I am just outside of that mileage which means I'd be schlepping into the capital along with every other commuter trying to make it there at 8am. No way. I am not kidding when I say that I will be a danger to myself and others around me on that highway. I've actually wondered about this. I work for local government and get paid as normal. I never got called until I started working at my present job. But it's all supposedly random. Except it isn't.

I hear you! I have been called 5 times in recent years and my DH never has. My friends never have, nor my DD.
Making it worse, I am so average that I get chosen every time.

I received a notice for federal court, however, I had a prepaid nonrefundable vacation so I was excused. They tried again a few months later when school started and my mom was in the hospital and I transport my so to school due to open enrollment. Excused. The third time was for summer and another prepaid nonrefundable vacation.
This was about 4-5 years ago and they haven't tried again. The ast try was during covid.
I'm about 65 miles away. I'm sure it's be interesting and if I was retired it’d be great. It’s a pain for teachers to plan to be out.

I would definitely see about a letter from the Dr regarding your anxiety. I'm sorry you get called so often. That's really frustrating.
If I were to be called, it would easily be a very bound up commute into downtown LA, at least 2hours.

I was called for circuit court two weeks ago and they were planning to seat three juries for three criminal trials. I ended up being the sixth person called for the first trial but the defense struck me as a juror. It was “criminal sexual assault of a minor” and the defense appeared to strike anyone who was a parent or grandparent. Didn’t matter though… I saw in last week’s paper he was convicted anyway. Then we were all dismissed as the other two cases were settled before trial.
I was called for jury duty in federal court about six years ago. I was actually excited about the prospect of it despite it being in the capital city an hour and a half a day. Unfortunately, at the last minute we were all dismissed as the cases were settled.
Jury duty is rarely convenient for any of us, but I do believe it’s an important part of our civic duty.

But you bet I'm going to be looking into this.

I've been called pretty much every year for 23 years. And I'm on call next week.

I have never had to actually go in to see if I would be chosen. I would be very surprised if you actually have to drive 30 or 70 miles just to see if they need you, typically you can wait to be notified after registering online.
We get a call or text each night before to tell us if we have to show up in the morning. It's been that way in the last 3 states I lived in.
(ETA I have never been called for federal jury duty so maybe that's different)

I have been registered to vote since the minute I turned 18, but had NEVER been called for jury duty, not even once. Until the pandemic. Seriously? I can't remember if it was before vaccines, or right after they had come out. But there was no way I was going to do that. I replied that I wasn't young anymore (although of course too many young people died of covid anyway) and I was not going to come into the courthouse to sit in a room with other people. They deferred me. Two years later I got another summons. Here we are told to phone in after 5:00 p.m. of the evening before our report date, to hear whether or not we'll be required to come in. I called and the recording said I did not have to report. whew. But, that counted as my jury duty so now I'm off the hook for three more years (that was last year). We'll see if they find me again. I guess I wouldn't mind going just to see how it is. But it would be easy for me to get there.. I could walk if I wanted, or take the subway. If I had to drive into a difficult large city that wasn't close by... well that would be a hard no.

I was on a federal jury about 20 years ago. Not one person was excused by the judge. One woman with plane tickets was given a deferment. Not even the guy waiting for his own trial was excused!
However, I think anxiety is a legitimate excuse, but that's just me.

Don’t respond. Unless you had to sign for that summons, nobody could prove you ever received it.

My father had ignored it because he was sick with the mumps and because of that he was not hauled into court or jail.
Seriously--you WILL face severe consequences if you just ignore it.
In our area, if you are the caregiver for small children or elderly, you can be excused. (Don't know about Federal Courts on this).

I totally get the anxiety. Our courthouse isn’t in the best location and I fast walk from the garage to the building. I’ve served on a jury but have also asked to be excused. My employer only pays for three days and this was a 3-4 week case. The judge was “are you sure you can’t go three weeks without pay?” I have a credit card and some cash in the bank and I felt guilty saying no. I get summoned almost every year so I’m sure I’ll have a chance to serve again.

NO, actually you WILL NOT. I have to search for it, but I read once that the San Diego County courts sends out way more summons than they need because they know a large percentage will ignore the summons. And they will not send out people to look for you. And in this county it is pretty easy to defer your summons, yet they still have a high percentage of no shows. Now, I don’t know about the Federal courts. I don’t think those guys mess around. And it is much harder to get a deferment with the Federal court.

Don’t respond. Unless you had to sign for that summons, nobody could prove you ever received it. Exactly. Nothing has EVER happened to any one of the dozens of people I know that just throw the summons in the trash. What is making me pause on doing that this time is because it is federal court. My mailing address is just a PO Box and people's mail gets mixed up all the time. The court's website does specifically state that not receiving a summons is not an excuse to not show up. Like umm excuse me, how is anyone supposed to know they are summoned if they did not receive the mail???

As for the PO Box, don't you still have to put a physical home address on your DMV record or your voter registration? My voting stuff has goes to my PO Box, but on there somewhere is my home address. I don't know. This is Federal court. They are pretty strict. Good luck!

Two cousins being tried together for possession with intent to distribute (crack and coke). I lived in Houston at the time and the courthouse was downtown, so 10ish miles.

Please don't ignore the summons. If your anxiety prevents you from driving that far to an unfamiliar area, either find a doc and get an excuse and/or Uber or get a friend to take you.

and/or Uber or get a friend to take you. Relying on someone to drive you 70 miles one-way, multiple times a week is asking a lot of someone. And Uber will get expensive very quickly.

And they will not send out people to look for you. And in this county it is pretty easy to defer your summons, yet they still have a high percentage of no shows. Given how many I was sitting in the courthouse with a couple years ago, I believe this. There were over 200 of us, and only about 25 went on to the next step. The majority were thanked and dismissed by midmorning. A few months ago I asked to be excused (not deferred) because of medical treatment without an issue. No doctor's notes or follow-up needed/happened. DH has had deferments many times because of his work schedule and only once had the summons rescheduled. Thankfully I've always been called to the local courthouse. Now they just have you call in the night before for a week (?). Both DH and DD have been called to downtown courthouses (county & federal) which is a time and parking challenge, so I feel for you. FWIW, DH did serve on a juror for a domestic violence case. It was torture for Mr. Chatty to not share while the trial was ongoing, but we heard all the details when he was done. FWIW, after buying our first house in WA both of us started getting summoned for jury duty annually at all levels and just checked off the "not a citizen" box.
