There's a meme going around on FB about the TV always being on as emotional support noise so I thought I'd start a poll.
I only have the TV on when I'm actively watching something but prefer the house to be quiet when I'm working or not watching. I know others like to have the TV on all the time as background so which are you?

We don’t have a TV on the first floor (living/dining/kitchen), where people are most of the time, so TVs are only on if people are watching here.

My late husband used to have it on all the time. I have a tv in my living room that I never turn on. If I’m watching something it’s on my iPad or occasionally on my phone. I listen to podcasts far more than I watch anything.

Only when watching except sometimes I have the Radio Paradise app on playing tunes when I’m cleaning or folding laundry.

I hate background noise, so mine is never on unless I’m watching something, and then I watch without the volume on most times. I use closed captioning.

It’s almost never on at our house. Mostly only when my husband is home for either sports or an episode or two of what ever we’re currently binging.
During the day I can’t stand unnecessary background noise. I love the peace and quiet.
In fact we only have one television in the house. None in the bedrooms. There is a second one on the screened porch but I don’t think it’s been turned on in over a year.

Jeremy has the TV on when he is home. I do not. I either am in the silence or I listen to music.

Only when watching. I’m also not a big fan of background noise.

I have a tendency to only watch ION on days when Chicago Fire and Chicago PD are on. Sometimes it is active viewing. Sometimes it’s just listening/background noise.
Mostly, there is a pod cast or YT video on my iPad. I like to listen to something while I do chores. When my phone is connected to the speaker, I prefer it. Haven’t tried to get the new phone connected. The last phone was constantly being disconnected.

I would say about an 80/20 split for me.
Sometimes when I am prepping food or cooking I like to have Food Network, PBS cooking shows, Cooking Channel or Discovery + for cooking shows on.
We have an open concept downstairs with no walls (hate it!!) so I can easily look up and see the TV.
When doing chores I will sometimes put on a favorite movie I know well for some back ground noise.

My husband has it on all the time…I’m pretty sure he puts the TV on as he’s sitting down when he gets home from work.
I’m generally watching TV when I have it on but it’s not to say I’ll turn it off when I go to wash dishes or something.

Only when watching. My husband will fall asleep watching tv and it stays on until I go shut it off. My in-laws (whom I really do love) have a tv on in the kitchen and living room ALL THE TIME. Sometimes the same channel, sometimes not. Even when the whole family is over for a holiday, etc. the tv's are both on. We sit down to eat a holiday dinner (albeit is casual), both tv's stay on. It makes my head swim to have all the different TV sounds bouncing around and then you add conversation of 15 people and it's .

For my entire life, the TV was always on ... then I turned 57 and all of a sudden I was annoyed by it! I have a big newish beautiful TV and I record the shows I love but I don't just have it on for background noise anymore ... My mum only turns hers off when she is asleep or out of the house!

Only when watching.
The only exception to that is if I'm at home having a domestic day and I have the morning 'magazine' type programmes on where one leads to another similar one after another until the news at lunchtime (I'm talking cooking/news/interviews/fashion/chit-chat) I'm not actually sitting in front of it watching it...I'm putting laundry on, doing the dishwasher, calling my Dad etc so it's on but I may miss bits here and there.

I have it on when I'm in the living room and if I'm doing something, I'll stop to watch if an interesting part comes up. I'm usually in the office, so I have music on, always but I turn it down soft enough so I can just hear it if I'm working on something.

I cannot stand having the tv on when I'm not watching. I hate tv in waiting rooms, too. It drives me insane. I can't tell you how much I hate it.
I don't have music playing in my house, either. I don't mind listening to it at a bar or sometimes in my car, but almost never in my house.
I'm ADHD and I have a very noisy job teaching very talky middle school kids. I crave quiet.
The only background noise I like is a fan when I sleep.

I almost never watch TV (or listen to it, lol) but if DH is on the ground floor - the TV is almost always on and if it's not, the stereo is. I prefer silence to background noise although I do sometimes have an audio book playing. DH doesn't like silence The only background noise I like is a fan when I sleep. same

It is usually turned on first thing in the morning, to listen to the morning news while getting ready for the day. If I'm home, it kind of stays on most the day for background noise, while I'm doing housework and other things. Of course, it's turned off when no one is home. Most of the time it is off in the late afternoon (about 2 or 3 pm) - it gets turned back on around 7pm for the world news and then prime time viewing.

I much prefer the quiet to the noise of the tv. I leave it off until afternoon, if I’m home. Although since I live alone, I usually watch something while I am eating. So that’s about 2 meals a day. That’s almost a must. Sometimes I’ll turn it back off when I’m done eating. Usually a program I’ve recorded. I also like a program on that doesn’t require my attention when I am scrapping. I’ve just always scrapped that way. I record a lot of programs, although much less than I use to. No, it’s not always on. I much prefer the quiet. Except when I’m eating or scrapping. 🤪
Forgot about sports ! I love to watch golf and football.

Mmm, kind of in between. Like I'll put on the TV while I'm doing other things, but only if it's something I also want to half-watch. I don't just have it on for the noise. Competing noise in the house makes me twitchy.

It really depends on who is home at the time. If DH is home, it’s pretty much on all the time unless he’s outside mowing grass or some similar task. If I’m home alone or with DD, we can go days without turning it on at all. Sometimes though I want to watch a YouTube or online class video on a larger screen, and at those times I’ll mirror it to the tv. Or sometimes DD or I will want to watch something specific so we turn it on then. I generally like silence. I don’t need background noise of any kind during the day, I have annoying dogs that bark at everything that moves outside to provide noise. I have the radio on in the car only, I never listen to it at home. The only noise I prefer is a fan sound at night when I’m sleeping. ETA: We recently had storms come through our area that knocked out the power for two days. When the power was restored, the 55” main family room TV wouldn’t turn on. DH took the back off thinking it might just be a fuse, but then saw that the fuse was soldered in. He said the heck with it and brought the smaller 32” TV down from the upstairs bonus room where it has sat since we brought it home from the lake cabin (and had never once been watched in that room). My prediction is that there will be a new big TV in the family room by the end of the week (we’re at our lake place right now otherwise I’m fairly sure it would have been replaced already). TV watching is his favorite addiction.

I love silence--makes it easier to hear all the voices in my head--so I prefer the TV or any other device to be off unless that is what I am watching. i don't mind others having the radio or TV on if they are paying attention to it. Dh prefers background noise which he never listens to, just needs it there. Drives me crazy when I am working in the kitchen, his radio takes over my brain, and then when I ask him about something just broadcast and he hasn't heard a word of it. GRRR...

I’m a “only when watching” person. We didn’t have the kids watch tv during the week when they were growing up and the habit stuck after they moved out.
True story. We moved into this house a year ago. When we were looking at the house, I noticed how many TVs there were. I counted them up and there were 10 TVs in the house. It’s less than 3,000 sq ft!

If it's on and I'm not watching, it's on either TCM or the ID Channel. Usually it's not on when I'm not watching though.

The TV is never on unless someone is watching. One of my pet peeves is to go to someone's house and they leave their TV on while you are visiting.

The tv is on most of the time when the member of my household who has misphonia is home. It help drown out sounds that trigger him.
I would prefer a quiet home, but I haven't had one of those............ ever.

I don't watch much tv. I don't have cable. I usually watch movies on youtube or a Library dvd. When it is over I turn it off.
I usually only have the tv on if there's breaking news and sometimes I have on mute. The only show I actively watch is American Idol. I watch youtube, so I can fast forward through the commercials.
I have sensory issues, and NEED quiet. Constant background noise (tv or music) is not good for me. A quiet home is my sanctuary, from the outside of my home external noise.

It used to never to on unless actively watching and it was one of those things that drives me crazy at my parents and inlaws - the TV is always on and the noise starts to get to me. I have noticed now that my kids aren't home, if my husband is traveling I'll turn it on in the evening even if I'm on my computer. Some how Food network in the background doesn't make the house feel so empty.

My answer is a technicality, I think. The actual TV is only on when I'm watching, but I do often have a YouTube video or music playlist playing in the background when I'm working on something in my desk/office area.
