I haven’t seen this mentioned here, but today has been a difficult day here in Munich. At about 9am, police were called to an area near the Israeli consulate and a museum documenting the rise of the National Socialist movement here. There was an exchange of gunfire, first shots from a young man carrying an old military weapon, then the police returned fire and he was killed. It has been revealed that he was an 18YO Austrian, known to police. It is being treated as terrorism. Today is the anniversary of the 1972 Olympic attack in Munich during the Olympic Games here - at this stage, police don’t know if that was a deliberate choice - but it probably saved lives, as the Consulate was closed for a memorial service. It really hit me hard as yesterday I accompanied a good friend to the Family Court for a hearing with her daughter. The court is less than 5 minutes walk from the area where this happened. If this had been yesterday, we’d have walked out of the court into the chaos of this, or been stuck in the court building until it was safe to leave.

This is the first I've seen of the story, sueg. So scary and far to close to home for you.

I'm so very sorry. I know Europe isn't as (sadly) accustomed to these events as America is, so I'm sure it's hitting people hard. Wishing for peace for Munich.

So frightening and much too close to home sueg. I’m glad the police were able to react swiftly.

This is the first I've seen of the story, sueg . So scary and far too close to home for you. I was just looking at the news site I linked in the OP and I recognised all the buildings in the videos. It really shook me to see places I’ve been and that are usually so lovely with police everywhere.

I am so sorry this happened. I was an 11 YO frightened Jewish girl when the Munich massacre occurred. I don’t know what to think about his choice of dates for his attack.

I am just a year younger than you, but I can clearly remember the attack too. I think Munich was the first Olympics I was really aware of, and I was watching from the other side of the world back then (Australia). That anyone could attack an event that was meant to represent coming together in peace for sport was so hard for me to comprehend. So far, there hasn’t been any official statement on whether they think the date was a deliberate choice, but it is hard for me to believe it was just coincidence.

My heart dropped when I saw your name and your title!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My DD was just in Munich this summer for a class on terrorism in the European theater, her minor is Global Terrorism studies. All those buildings in the picture and the places nearby, she went to visit as part of her class. You mentioned it was an Austrian youth. This is going to sound very stupid, but is there bad blood btwn Germans and Austrians since the world wars? I also wonder if Austrian youth are being... targeted to convert youth for terrorist groups? I only ask bc I know the Taylor Swift concert in Austria was cancelled due to the plot foiled by extremists there, and they were young... When we were there in October, it did seem that Germany was forced to take the brunt of the blame for WWII, and it seemed Austria got "away" with less of the blame. I hope you are ok sueg!!!! Thinking of you!

So scary! I am traveling to Munich/Berlin in a couple of weeks and was advised by a German-born friend to avoid the Jewish historical sites. Just another reason why I never identify myself as a Jew when traveling (and hardly at home either, TBH). I’m glad it ended quickly before others were injured or worse, but it needs to STOP.

I don't feel that there is specifically bad blood due to the wars. It is more like how I see the relationship between Australia and New Zealand, and maybe the US and Canada - one large, relatively powerful nation with a smaller country close by that speaks the same language (but differently) and also does things a bit differently. So there is some condescension on the part of the larger nation, and tolerance of 'big brother' by the smaller one. Austria definitely does have an issue with youth being radicalized, and I'm not sure why exactly. They have moved much further to the right politically than Germany - recent election results in the East of Germany notwithstanding - which may be part of it. I don't think I ever saw the names of the accused in the Taylor Swift threats, but they have released the first name and initial of yesterday's perpetrator - it is German law to only release this much, not the full first and last names - and (to me) the first name sounded like it was of Turkish origin, though the police said he was born in Austria. ETA: Latest information is that the attacker had Bosnian roots. The world seems to be in a sorry state, doesn't it? We should all be able to go where we want, when we want, without fear of violence. This is the really sad part for me. In the 15 years we've lived here, I have always felt the Munich was safe, for such a large city (pop 1.5 Mill) I take public transport home at night, even from Oktoberfest, and have never felt afraid walking around the city. I hope your travels are uneventful. Munich and Berlin are both incredible cities and mostly safe. I am a little anxious about the upcoming anniversary of the start of the Gaza conflict, even though I won't be in Germany that week.
