I recently made a layout and used some older Shimelle stickers that were unicorns Obviously I was not scrapping photos of unicorns { such a pity } but the stickers were the perfect colour and shape - and I had the classic three of them I then thought maybe that was what I was meant to do with all the llamas, chandeliers and flamingos I’ve tossed over the years 🤣😱

Shimelle would say so! Years ago when she had the collection with the chameleon (I think) she did something where she made suggestions of how to use word associations and lateral thinking to make random icons work for real life pages. I think some neuro-spicy brains are a bit better at that. I have chaos-brain/ADHD but I am annoyingly literal about embellishments.

That's awesome! I often use random icons if they're the right color/vibe for a page, even if they aren't directly relevant to the pictures - I've managed to retrain my brain to classify llamas, unicorns, mushrooms, etc. as decorative items like flowers.

I admire people who can use random icons on their pages, I'm far too literal and need there to be a connection with the story. I could use things like unicorns on a page about toys, or perhaps childhood memories from the 80's, but that's about as brave as I get. Well done for getting three on a page!

I’m another one that would need at least a small loose reference to a rainbow or happiness or something to use a unicorn on a page. I just can’t otherwise! I did regret the few unicorns I got rid of recently though as a family friends daughter had a sixth birthday and she LOvES unicorns and all I could find in my stash was a long forgotten journaling card to add to her birthday card 🥲

I once put a Basic Grey frog on a layout about a hayride, and that was the first and only time I used a random icon on a page. I think it was 2005 or so, LOL! (And even then I think I did try to make some cutesy word connection--like the child in the pictures was having a "hopping good time" and/or they were running and "jumping" around at the event, etc. So yeah, I'm not one for using unicorns, llamas, chameleons, etc. In fact even when I make pages with cats or dogs I rarely use images of cat or dogs faces unless they are at least similar to the cat/dog in the photos to some degree. So yeah, this is why I buy far, far more paper than embellishments. I'm just bad with a lot of "general" embellishments.

joblackford I have used one of Shimelle's chameleon stickers! My son was painting using a lot of bright colors and the colors in her Box of Crayons collection worked perfectly with the photos. I stuck a chameleon sticker on my layout, and it still makes me smile.

I just can’t. I don’t use a ton of themed stuff anyway, but the ones that don’t actually go sends me into a tizzy. LOL

joblackford I also remember Shimelle scrapping with the chameleon. It was a good lesson, but I do struggle with that because I'm also literal to a fault. However... I'm thinking all the 12x12 layouts I'm doing of my son's childhood would be a good place to put random, one off icons as a sort of "Where's Waldo" surprise. Something to think about. Sort of like old school tile setters that would include a "mistake" in their design because only God is perfect. I love to find them in vintage tiled bathrooms.

I once saw a youtuber put house stickers on a layout about white water rafting. I was aghast LOL

That's where I can tell I'm more of a photo album maker than a scrapbooker because if there's a photo of the thing I find adding a sticker of it redundant! I like when other people do it, but my brain just says nope. If the story was about a frog or cat or something that didn't appear in the photo or show up well that would be different - I would use the sticker then. If I went on a bike ride and the photo was just of the view, then yes, bike embellishment. But if there's a bike right in the middle of the picture then nope. lol. I hear Shimelle in my head saying "add MOAR!" and I know if I was more of an embellished/layered scrapper a little icon amongst a bunch of other embellishments would be lovely, but it's just not my style. Luckily I make cards where all the silly critters can get used. No prob-llama!

I once saw a youtuber put house stickers on a layout about white water rafting. I was aghast LOL Oh no! That's just wrong. lol. Unless you're scrapping about your house falling into a river/ocean in a storm. 😬 I get twitchy if there are number embellishments that don't reflect the age, date, or how many people are in the photo.

The photos were of white water rafting, in a state that is not where they live. No where near home! Not related to homes/houses. Why??!!

I have a group text of a bunch of teachers that don't teach core academic subjects- one of us dubbed us the "magical unicorns". So now I get to use unicorns on my layouts of my friends.
My icons have to go with my pages- I just cannot put a random icon down. It just does not compute for me.
I used a zebra once on a photo of my cat lying on sheets that had little zebras on them. I had someone ask me why there was a zebra on my page. So even when I do try to make it go with the photos, it sometimes doesn't work, evidently.
I understand about having the right dog die cut to match the dog in the photo, too. I have a tabby cat and I pretty much buy every cat icon that includes a tabby. I'm not against putting other colored cats on my pages, but I do like matching him.

I'm probably too literal on embellishments when I scrapbook. I mean I can use buttons on a layout that is not about sewing, but a layout with a unicorn either there has to be a unicorn in the photo or story or the soccer team is called the unicorns or something...
DD actually had one of those onesies (not the baby ones, the full length one with a hood) of a unicorn. Did I use a unicorn on that page when I had a chance? I'm going to have to go look, I probably didn't because there was already one in the photo!

Luckily I make cards where all the silly critters can get used. No prob-llama! I do the same thing. Can't put a bike on a layout where there's a bike in the photo. Which is probably why I have so many unused bicycles in my stash... I don't know why this is not quoting right, I was responding to the part about this paragraph...

I feel like the odd-man out! I enjoy icons and will stretch the meaning to fit my page to a degree - but no, just NO to a house on a page about white water rafting! I feel like icons are like decorating choices - something unexpected that complements/adds to decor or provides a little punch is fine, but if it clashes? No! Strangely, the more specific a page is, the more specific an icon might need to be - like the dog point above - if I'm scrapping my puppers, I'd prefer a paw print to a dog face unless it matches well. (random note: the recent Simple Stories dog line included a piece of pp that has my dog's face on it, so I've fussy cut them all out, but have almost used them all now!)
I think we all have icons that we are attracted to, or repulsed by: I don't like bikes, houses, trucks, llamas, fruit/veggies.

I am going through some pictures of my layouts and I can be kind of random with the icons:
* I have a picture of a Beauty & the Beast topiary in Disney with a cupcake embellishment along with the phrase "Sweetest Thing" * Typewriters on non-office/desk related pages * A giraffe on page with my husband, friend and some weird guy dressed like the creature from the black lagoon * I used a hot air balloon on a page with friends at a crop (this one I don't get especially since I don't really like that icon in general...maybe bc I had to fly to the retreat??) * My cay used to go to my sister's house when we went on vacation and I included a suitcase and travel icons for the cat's vacation.

Like joblackford, I dislike redundancy. I'm also not a theme scrapper, so I rarely purchase sticker sheets/ephemera packs since they're often heavily themed. Before any supply enters my organization system, pieces (e.g. individual stickers/ephemera/stamps) that I don't intend to use for whatever reason (e.g. color/style/size/font/sentiment/theme) are tossed into a designated donation box in my craft room. Once full, I donate its contents to a local charity (recently, an after school art program for at-risk students).
