I keep thinking of more things I want to write, lol... I am so sorry about spamming your thread, jeremysgirl ! here's a few whole-food plant-based (WFPB) podcasts for anyone interested to check out-- Rip Esselstyn's Plantstrong Podcast. (I think they are also available on Youtube.) He is the owner of the Plantstrong company, and his father is Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, the heart surgeon who (along with T. Colin Campbell) is one of the OG Godfathers of the WFPB movement. Rip is a plant-based triathlete and a former firefighter who lives in Texas does weekly interviews with a LOT of people in the whole-food, plant-based world, and there's something like, 5 seasons now? I started listening from the beginning, and am now going through them again. (I listen on my commute, but I should really listen sometime when I can take notes. lol.) But jeremysgirl you might find a particular episode interesting: January 3, 2023-- Season 4, Episode 178. His interview is with Dr. Uma Naidoo, who is a psychiatrist, and also a trained professional chef and nutritionist. The episode is called Your Brain on Food and is "all about the impact that foods have on our brain and well-being. How food can influence our mental health and how a plant-forward diet can improve our mood and help treat / prevent a wide range of psychological and cognitive health issues, from ADHD to anxiety, depression, OCD, and others." It was SOOO informative!! One other podcast I like a lot is Switch4Good, hosted by Dotsie Bausch and Alexandra Paul. Dotsie is a retired Olympic medal-winning bicyclist and Alexandra is an actress / animal advocate. The Switch4Good Foundation is about the (flawed / erroneous) belief that dairy is good for us (but it's NOT, actually) and the podcast is about that, as well as more generally about whole-food plant-based cooking, health, etc. They have recorded almost 300 episodes. I've also started listening / watching Chef AJ Live on Youtube / podcasts-- Chef AJ is a WFPB chef who was an overweight junk-food vegan and vegan pastry chef, until she lost >50 lbs when she was in her 50s after switching to WFPB eating. She hosts a wildly popular Youtube live show weekly, I think (?) and has well over 500 shows now, with ALL the experts/doctors/chefs asking to be on her show. eta: one more thing -- two movies that should be available either on Youtube or Amazon Prime, I think... Plant Pure Nation and From Food to Freedom, both by Nelson Campbell (the son of T. Colin Campbell). The first movie is about his quest to add language to a bill in the Kentucky legislature that states something general, like 'plant based eating is a healthier way of eating' and it shows the HUGE health benefits of plant-based eating, following people in a small SC town as they embark on eating plant-based to see how their health markers improve. (spoiler-- the ag industry in Kentucky does NOT WANT that language inserted into the bill... shocker.) The second movie follows a small group of people in an 'immersion' type experience (it was filmed during the beginning of COVID, I think) where they ate plant-based and worked on building up healthy routines... you see what the switch in eating does for their health issues.

I struggle with my HDL being below 60. 39+ is normal. Cardiology and nutritionist said low normal for a woman my age is 50, with optimal at 60-70. I was at 65 to 72 before my allergies and I had to cut a ton of food out.

That's awesome! I'm just waiting on my A1C results to come in. I feel like that will be the last piece of the puzzle to me. How do you feel over all?? And I love that it has been positive for your Bipolar. Really good actually. In fact I have decided for sure that I am going to continue to eat this way. However, the world is not an easy place to stick to a vegan diet outside of the house. I'm sure with the allergy issues you have, you know what it's like to be restricted from a typical american diet. So I'm going to cut myself some slack out of the house like I did last weekend. Good thing is that we eat at home almost all the time and at least locally here we have some options to choose from. But honestly I feel so good that I want to continue. My mental health is a big draw if this is what is contributing to it. And my physical health is a big draw. And well the smoking, that was a big deal too. I'm feeling healthier all around. Once I get that A1C number I'll see what happens. I know my appetite has not been right (I want more) because of the smoking too. I get why people gain weight when they quit. I think portion size held me back from more weight loss. And I still eat cookies and such on occasion. But all vegan. So I guess I could restrict sugar too if I really wanted to lose even more weight. I tried to stay consistent throughout this because I really was curious to see what would happen. And I tried not to taint the data. Lol. So I also didn't exercise or change any meds. But those two things are options too.

pantsonfire I want to ask you specifically this. (,but anyone can answer) I'm in a terrible way right now and I have an appointment at urgent care in an hour that I made hours ago. We were at the lake last weekend. I know I ate meat, dairy and egg containing products like I said in OP. By Tuesday I felt a bit itchy. I thought it was just mosquito bites because, the lake, right? Well as the week went on, they got worse and worse. All over my body. Bigger and bigger. Itchy to the point where cortisone wasn't touching it. Today I have huge bumps all over. Not those tiny mosquito bite like bumps but actual lumps. So I made the appointment. As the day has gone on now, some of the bumps are starting to look like the dyshidrotic eczema I used to get on my hands. I haven't had a flare of this type of eczema in years. I have another type of eczema that I get in certain places that hasn't flared in over a year. And I have a spot of psoriasis on my elbow that has improved since I started this diet but I didn't connect the two things. I have never in my life had an eczema reaction like what I'm experiencing right now. Like I said, at first I thought a mosquito made a meal of me. But that one spot has now changed and looks like eczema. Anyway, I'm wondering now if this is what is going on and if the veer from the plant based diet last weekend has caused this. I'll know I hope in an hour. But anyone with any experience like this?

So sorry you are dealing with this. Firstly because it sucks, and secondly because this has been such a great day for you!
This sounds like an allergic reaction to me. My little sister suddenly became massively allergic to mosquito bites a few years ago. They start off looking like anyone else's mosquito bites, but within a few days it looks like she has ping pong balls under her skin and they hurt.

I'll know I hope in an hour. But anyone with any experience like this? That is how my body reacted to the 3rd Pfizer Covid vaccine. I have never had a reaction similar to the foods I am mild, moderately or severely allergic to but the UC and ER all confirmed it as a reaction to the vaccine. Mine were on my arms and legs. It was horrible and lasted over a month. So it certainly could be a reaction. I get eczema if I have too much gluten, or get it with things I have a mild allergy too (like hay). I will also sneeze and get a runny nose. It could also be your body saying what the heck was that, get out! Let us know what UC says. The only other thing it could be is no see ums. Those boogers are worse than mosquitos and I have 6 bites right now.

Last year I was on 1.5 months of antibiotics due to infection and various allergy meds that aren't OTC and creams. But those looked nothing like the welts and gives and rash I had from my Covid vaccine reaction. Those kept popping up too. The mosquito ones were 1 or 2. But with the Covid vaccines reaction Id get 3 or 5 or 8 new hives then welts over the course of 3 days.

I know it's not the covid vaccine as I had my last in January.
But this is definitely something. And it's gone from itchy to painful. Still some spots itch but they are definitely painful. I'm supposed to leave for camping tomorrow.

eta: I also found out after cutting out dairy products that the dairy was VERY much the cause of most of my sinus issues, and my skin cleared up a LOT. FWIW, I had chronic sinus infections until the NP in my PCP's office told me to cut dairy and get a Neti pot. This advice was seriously life changing. I haven't had a sinus infection in 10 years. I have added some cheese and plain Greek yogurt back and they don't seem to bother me, but cow milk, ice cream, and cream based sauces all cause a pretty immediate response. I love that you are getting such positive results from this experiment, jeremysgirl! I'm not an expert at all, but try to stay away from inflammatory foods (fried foods, red meat, processed foods, added sugar, alcohol, gluten) because they trigger my psoriasis. I wonder if your skin is reacting to more inflammatory foods from last weekend after a few months of mostly plant based?

I'm supposed to leave for camping tomorrow. I know it's not the Covid vaccine for you but just stating that I have had that type of reaction to something. Mine burned. I took Luke warm bath in the morning and didn't shave for weeks. After I let the water empty the I filled it with cool water and sat. Let that drain and basically air dried my skin. Got out and immediately applied the Rx cream I was given (that can take several days to start to work) and then after a bit CeraVe cream. I would do cool compresses during the day and apply the Rx cream again. At night I took another cool bath (basically as cold as my body allowed) and sat then drained, air dried and went to bed with no sheets or clothing. If anything touched it, it hurt to bad. The cool helped soothe the pain and itch. Ask UC if rubbing alcohol would be fine to use. It helps with itching, burning and cools as it evaporates from your skin. I use that on skeeter syndrome and no see um bites.

They don't know what it is. He said no likely a food allergy. Not mosquitos gone wild. He's not thinking it's eczema. He thought it was swimmers something but I never went in the water last weekend except up to my ankles. Possibly beach flu bites. But the delay in reaction is puzzling. Poison ivy? How? The dog? Jeremy doesn't have it.
We've basically got no explanation. I got a shot and a. Steroid.

So are they flaky bumps? I ask because DH had a horrible, out of the blue psoriatic arthritis flare about 3 months ago. Angry red patches that did have some bumps in there. But it was all over. Even his ears. It took a steroid cream that had to be applies with gloves and some med. I can't remember now what it was.
Hoping your shot does the trick.
And BTW, I have been sitting here all night watching videos on RPL channel. I am just drooling here and can't wait to get her book. I should have it by Wednesday.

We are all hyped up to go. We've got the camper loaded and everything. I got that shot and they gave me Prednisone for the next 12 days. So we will see how it goes. the lumps itch and hurt at the same time. Jeremy went and got me some calamine and we put that all over so that's helping with the itch.

My A1C stayed exactly the same as June 6.0. in January it was 6.3. I'm a little bit disappointed. But not really. I did nothing to limit food intake other than cutting animal products. And I'll just say that I do understand why people gain weight after quitting smoking. I still have not stopped any of the cravings for anything be it smokes or sugar. 🙄
I just finished Ornish's book Undo It and I know there is progress to be made still. Tweaks that can happen yet.
I don't see my doctor until January so there's more time to work on this. I plan to continue.

Also people who do various food changes can experience rashes and gives or eczema. It is their body purging toxins. Could be that maybe.
If it doesn't improve ask for a biopsy.
Dd had something similar and they ran a unique panel since she has Ehlers Danlos as well as other biopsy pannels. Ended up clear of a specific skin disorder associated with EDS and came back for dermatitis.
No new foods, soaps, etc.
By chance they said stop all lotions and only use CeraVe. Then add back after 2 weeks others she would use.
Come to find out it was a lotion she used. It contained a soy ingredient we didn't know (because of scientific name crap) and that is what caused it. She has a mild allergy to soy.
She ended up in the hospital too because they thought it was her immune system.

Oh I hope you feel better soon and they figure out what's causing your hives/rash. Is there any chance it could be shingles?
Congrats on staying the course with eating a plant-based diet and for quitting smoking!! I know that is difficult!

I hope you are feeling better. That sounds miserable. Prednisone makes me so I can’t sleep at night I hope you can sleep and I hope you feel good enough to go camping.
I don’t think I could go cold turkey like it sounds like you did but congratulations on doing it and quitting smoking. That is hard. I was thinking maybe I could do this. I could maybe go mostly vegetarian but not sure I could go vegan. I love cheese and eggs. Although I suppose any improvement would be better than none.
Do you say what you are eating in the dinner thread? I would be curious. I have never even considered going vegetarian. I did cut out gluten for a while. I like oat milk in my coffee. I think I could switch to that and reduce that dairy that I drink daily.
It’s really impressive what you have done and how you have lowered most of your numbers, lost weight, quit smoking and are feeling better with your bipolar. The fact that changing your diet has helped that much is amazing.

jeremysgirl.... How AWESOME is it that you have such a healthy diet, and HUGE congrats on not smoking! Your colorful, yummy photos of your cooking always make me think I should try that, too! Your dedication to meeting goals/ trying new things is inspring! Eeek, I hope that steroid injection and the prednison help you enough so that you can still go camping! It's frustrating when they can't pinpoint a diagnosis. crimsoncat05.....Such great info you shared! I went to youtube and watched a bit of Chef AJ, and look forward to learning more.

My grandson is allergic to chlorine and gets a rash all over his body that sounds similar to what you have described. When he was about 10 he took swimming lessons and broke out. I lectured him on taking a shower after getting out of the pool.
The next year he took more lessons and same thing. Doctor prescribed several different creams.
High shcool has a required swim section in gym classes. He never said anything to me until one day he showed me his stomach. That kid had severe rash from his chin to his toes. I about cried it looked so painful. This time they did give him a steroid.
He had to get a doctor's note to be excused in the swimming portion of high school gym. He loves the water too.
Your mention of swimmers something made me think if you didn't go swimming, that places like campgrounds might use water with a higher chlorine content especially if they are pouring it in a well.
Sure hope you get better and get to go on your camping trip.
