I recognize that AR-15s have been politicized and have become the symbol for gun rights defenders as well as a symbol of what's wrong for advocates for gun safety However, in terms of half truths and under reporting, there are a lot of facts left out regarding AR-15s and other military style weapons. In the Uvalde shooting, the slower velocity rounds of ammunition , 5.56 were used but it did not spare the lives of the 19 children. Warning - graphic details In the aftermath of Uvalde, parents were asked to submit DNA ,in part because some of the faces of the children may have been unrecognizable. www.nytimes.com/2022/05/25/us/texas-shooting-parents-dna-victims.htmlThe request suggests that some of the 19 children who were killed may have been so severely wounded and grouped so closely together that they were difficult to identify, according to experts in medical forensics.“A high-powered firearm can cause very devastating injuries and can make identification challenging from a visual point of view,” Dr. James R. Gill, Connecticut’s chief medical examiner, said in an interview on Wednesday.
And the little girl, Lexi, identified by her green sneakers with a heart on the toe!!

People who get into technicalities about how the AR-15 isn’t this or that seem to want to ignore the fact that there are obviously reasons mass shooters - mostly white men - choose them as their weapon.
We can argue technical specifications all day but the fact is that these guns are chosen because they kill more quickly and easily in the hands of an untrained shooter (and possibly a trained one) than other things the gunman might choose. The police in Uvalde were unwilling to confront a gunman using an AR-15 despite having armor, shields, and greater numbers.
They’re not necessary for hunting, target shooting, or keeping coyotes from eating your chickens. There are other weapons suitable for those things. They’re sold because some people think they’re “fun” and others see them as the weapon of choice for killing humans. They’re still available only because the gun manufacturers rely on them for profits and lobby extensively to keep that cash stream coming. We’ve sold out our children’s lives for their profits.

Not to pick in iowgirl or anyone else in particular but whenever I see 'because tradition' or similar it makes me a tad crazy. Or at least question that as an answer to why questions. Many a tradition have been abandoned as archaic and outdated and some simply wrong. Some actually outlawed as should be. Tradition when used an an excuse for something is weird to me, as no further thought give, in many cases. 'I'll continue to xxx simply because we always have.' Weird and sometimes hurtful or even dangerous, to me. Exactly. When you know better, you do better. We need to do better.
