Buddy or butty? Butty is the normal name but maybe it’s regional or something 😊 Chip buttie here. Delta Dawn I thought you lived in Asia. What on earth did you eat there then? Japanese food a lot of the time. I also make Canadian food. Ex Hubby liked alcohol the best so it wasn’t hard to feed him. Nothings sweet nor salty. Just alcohol.

I want to add that I can and do find lots of food to eat in other countries, and am generally a pretty adventurous eater. If someone offered fries, gravy, and peas to me, I'd probably try it, and I certainly wouldn't choose to starve rather than eat it. It just doesn't look appetizing to me. It looks like something we might in the US call a "struggle meal." Of course, a lot of comfort food would fall into that category. I did try the blood sausage in Colombia and didn't care for it, even though I wasn't told what it was until after I'd tried it. DH's employees were having a good time ordering "weird Colombian foods" for us to try and I wasn't about to spoil their fun. I don't know why that's considered a Colombian food there except maybe that there's a lot of European influence in South American cuisine. I think you actually get what I was saying... And it ain't that serious, people.. I thought this was a light-hearted thread. My bad! It definitely was meant to be light-hearted!

I looooooooove mushy peas. And beans on toast. My British husband also taught me to put fries between two slices of bread with ketchup and malt vinegar. He calls it a chip buddy. Buddy or butty? Butty is the normal name but maybe it’s regional or something 😊 I probably spelled it incorrectly!

You haven’t lived. Chips, mushy peas and gravy are divine. Especially with a shake or two of Henderson’s Relifh.

Also, why would you call a sandwich egg salad when there is no salad in it? 🤔 My guess is that here salad can refer to anything that is made of several ingredients all mixed together. We also have tuna fish salad, jello salad, fruit salad - and not a spec of lettuce in them. Well, maybe a large leaf used as holder for the tuna fish or chicken salad. Don’t forget my favorite - chicken salad! I am always amused watching some British YouTubers try American food and when they get a sandwich with lettuce and maybe tomato on it, they comment on how fresh the “salad” on it is. Lettuce on a sandwich is not called salad here. Generally, lettuce by itself isn’t called salad, unless you put dressing on it and usually add other things. It’s just differences in naming.

Snickers salad is a dessert salad made with Snickers bars, apples, whipped topping, marshmallows, and sometimes puddIng.

I love peas. But mushy peas, especially with their unnatural green hue don't do anything for me. As for mixing peas with gravy---I do that when I have shepherd's pie, but again, we're talking peas that still have a degree of bite to them.

I've seen it with vanilla pudding and Cool Whip- I've only ever encountered it once and I could never see it again and be just fine.

Along the same lines of odd food names (to people outside US) is “grilled cheese”. I mean yes, it’s grilled, but isn’t there a major ingredient missing in the name - like bread?! I suppose it’s an abbreviation of “grilled cheese sandwich” but it sure sounds funny to me. Doesn’t taste funny though, I love a good grilled cheese sandwich.

It’s not a grilled cheese anything to me, it’s a cheese toastie, assuming it’s two pieces of toast with cheese in the middle or cheese on toast if it’s one piece of toast with melted cheese on top.

I do not like peas! They are acceptable in vegetable soup or pot pie. Never by themselves. Can’t even stand the smell. They do not make me flee the kitchen like tuna does though.
After going gluten free last year, I have difficulty with food in the US. Locally, I have 4 places I am able to eat out. Out of town, I rely on Red Lobster and Chick-FIL-a. Thinking Outback would work if I limited myself to baked potato and broccoli.
One never knows where wheat is hiding. Can’t count on a veggie omelette because some places add pancake batter so it is fluffy.
It has forced us to eat at home unless necessary.

I would definitely try mushy peas, but not on French fries. I don’t like soggy…anything. Yeah, I’m one of those people. ☺️. I remember watching someone as a kid crumble so many crackers in her chili that it turned into a soggy mass. I had to look away from it. 😖

I like snickers and whipped cream and I like apples. I am not a fan of marshmallows, so I will take a pass on the Snickers Salad. Mixing all those things together sounds wretched. "raw apples and whipped cream" (shudder)

I don't love mushy peas or chips so I wouldn't go out of my way to try the OP's dish but if it was served to me, I would eat it. Black pudding - I haven't had since I was a kid but I remember liking it and I'm hoping to try it again next month Haggis - I'm not sure if I've had that or not but it's on my list of things to hopefully try next month also AussieMeg - I've never had that but would probably like the soup version Snickers salad - doesn't sound awful to me...it does sounds like a bad idea for diabetics (like me) Like several have said - I like trying new foods when I travel although for my trip in October, I'm also looking forward to some childhood favourites like steak and kidney pie that are hard to find in the States. And while I think of salad as containing lettuce (or at least raw leafy greens of some sort or another), I understand that here in the States, it's the cold equivalent of casserole - food mixed together. lesley - my egg mayo has eggs, mayonnaise, dillweed, and onions - and yes, everyone here in the States calls it egg salad

I’ve only realised what you are all referring to as blood sausage is black pudding. The best black pudding in Scotland is made on Stornoway in the Hebrides. Haggis flamed in whisky with mashed potatoes and mashed swede is a joyous thing. Dh and I want to try haggis and that sounds yummy. Black pudding would be a good descriptor for what I had last winter. And we were right on the border with Scotland. The girl could only get out that it was blood.

Laughing my head off here. following on from Snickers salad with apples and discussions of black pudding, I present, for your delectation, black pudding and apple salad. I actually think it would be quite nice as pork and apple sauce is a thing so it’s just a step from that . . .

Or it can be eaten without the bread. I've had an egg sandwich before, which was just sliced boiled eggs (or a scrambled egg), placed on a piece of bread, mayo on the bread, and maybe some lettuce and tomato. And I've had egg salad sandwich, which is the egg and mayo all mixed together in a bowl, and then spread on to a piece of bread. I guess if you chopped up the bacon and the avocado, added some mayo, mixed it all together, you could call that a bacon "salad". . It is the mixing up all the ingredients together that makes it a "salad", not just layering the ingredients.

To paraphrase Joey Tribbiani: "What's not to like? Chips, good. Peas, good. Gravy, GOOD!" So I take it you also wouldn't be a fan of the South Australian classic Pie Floater? A meat pie floating on top of mushy peas or pea soup, with tomato sauce on top. Yum, I'd try it! Is a meat pie an actual little pie with a meat mixture inside? That's what it looks like to me in your photo. At first I thought it was like a burger patty (just meat) on top of the peas. Yours looks good to me. I do love peas though. Split pea soup (kind of similar to mushy peas, but a different type of pea I think) is one of my vary favorite soups. A meat pie is a staple savoury bakery item here. For lunch or for smoko (tradespeople's morning or afternoon tea LOL) it is an individual serve pastry pie with either a ground beef and gravy filling (most common) or for posher version it might be steak chunks with mushroom and gravy etc. It usually comes in a paper bag so that you can eat it on the go.
