One thing I haven't missed moving out of our Seattle area neighborhood is the raccoons. We had a chronic problem because 2 neighbors fed them. We chased them twice out of nesting in our attic, once after mama tore a pretty big hole in the roof. DH repaired the hole and mama came back that night and ripped the roof apart again. She was not happy. Our neighbor thought local kids were pulling the pump off his pool cover at night. He sat up to catch them and discovered it was mama raccoon cutting through his yard with her babies. Mama walked out on the pool cover, grabbed the pump and brought it back to the patio like she was tidying up. The same neighbor put new sod down on their side yard. Every morning it was neatly rolled up. The raccoons were rolled it up to access the grubs underneath. He finally put down chicken wire and somehow attached the sod so they couldn't roll it up. I believe they are highly intelligent but also a major pest.

We were camping back in the day and some racoons tore all our towels off a makeshift clothesline between two trees. I also came upon one when I was walking to the bathroom late at night and it scared the crap out of me. At the end of our street in the Bay Area, we could see their eyes glowing after dark as they hid in the storm drains. Creepy!

We took a tourist boat trip in Florida and stopped part way at an area where a load of raccoons came onto the boat because they’d been taught to expect food. A few came and put their little paws on my knee, which I was delighted with but I guess I’d have been more wary had I read that first! I still think they are really cute and clever but I don’t have to live with them!
