I’ve resisted giving up my physical planner/calendar, but I find I’m not using it as much as I should, and I’m ready to give an online calendar/app a try.
I set up a Google calendar a long time ago with all our family birthdays on it, and my husband has been using his personal Google calendar for many years. He does have issues sometimes though, with events that he puts on his phone not showing up on his laptop and vice versa. He also gets frustrated because he doesn’t necessarily want to all the extended family birthdays on his calendar, but sometimes they show up anyway. I’m afraid if I set up a Google calendar of my own we might both be frustrated with these issues.
So to avoid all that, I want to find a calendar that isn’t Google. Does anyone have any suggestions? It would need to be on my iPhone and iPad.

He needs to either unlink or unsubscribe to the calendar you set up with all the bdays.
You can have multiple Google calendars and view all, some or one. I'm guessing that's the issue.
Sorry no other app recommendations as I'm a heavy Google Workspace user.

What about the native calendar app? That’s what I use. DH and I have several calendars set up. Some we share, some we don’t. I do believe that you need to set up the individual calendars on a laptop or desktop, however.

We use the the native Apple iCloud calendar on 2 iPhones, 1 iPad, 2 iMacs and 2 MacBook Pros. I use the same Apple ID on all of my devices, my DH uses his own Apple ID. You must be signed into iCloud using your id and on all of your devices. When I initially set the iCloud calendar up, I “shared” it with my DH. It is called “family” and has a yellow dot beside the event. I also set up a “Restless Spirit” only calendar with a purple dot beside the event. These events are not shared with my DH.
We both input events for the shared calendar. The events he adds to the calendar show up in the “inbox” as a shared calendar change. Clicking OK puts the event in my calendar. When deleting any shared calendar event deletes it from all calendars on all devices that are signed into the cloud. There will be a message the other person receives, saying which event it was and that is was deleted.
I like the calendar and it works well for us. Getting my husband to check the calendar before he schedules an appointment or event, now that’s a whole Nother topic.

I love the Google calendar, preferring it over the dozens that I have tried. One of the features tha5 I like is the way my color-coding for different types of things is displayed. Your DH can easily unlink the Birthdays calendar so that they don’t show up - if he’s having difficulty doing that, he could do it through a browser rather than the app. Birthdays can be pulled from your Contacts which might explain why they are there, but it’s just a matter of unchecking the Birthdays box.
Having different calendars available is another feature I really like - Birthdays is one, but I have others to do with my sports club etc. I can turn them on & off at the click of a button, or see them all displayed at once, my choice. DH and I share a Google calendar, but my sports club calendar (for example) isn’t shared because he has no interest at all in what’s happening there so has no need to have it display on his phone.
