Thank you so much to everyone who sent a card, good thoughts, and commented on my original post. It wouldn't allow me to update so I'm going to share these here. The flight was a huge success, they had 100 veterans and the oldest Honor Flight traveler was 103 years old, simply amazing. My dad has had a really neat life with some crazy experiences and wasn't super sure about this one. He had a very intense job with high stakes and lots of trauma but was not in direct combat so he almost felt like he didn't deserve it as much as someone else would. He was originally nominated by a class of students at the local high school career center where he goes every now and then to talk about his military experiences and about some other paths he's taken. They nominated him and then he didn't get on the list somehow so the HF team told him to call them and they'd get him on the next one. He agreed, but didn't call and he ran into the same lady at a VA health fair and remembered him and gave him a date right then. They left at 630am and didn't land until after midnight because of weather delays. They had the water cannons in DC and several people cheering and then went to all the monuments and had lunch and dinner before an enthusiastic welcome back in Columbus. His flight buddy was a Vietnam Vet and they forged such a strong bond that day, they shared stories and several intense emotional moments. They were both mobile and had a guardian to help them all day, but it was good for my dad to help his friend get around and honor the people he lost in Vietnam. He shared awful things about how they passed that I won't share, but it was the most emotional part of the day by far for both of them and their guardian. Here are a few photos from the day, one I know every single one of them will remember forever. It's only allowing me one photo at a time to upload...pause please...there are 9

The Vietnam Memorial (He was holding his belt because he was reaching to do the etching. Easier to prevent falls than pick someone up. )

A midnight welcome home. They uploaded 1200 photos plus they took some and so did their guardians. They will each receive a personalized photo book, I can't wait to see it. This was such a beautiful experience for everyone involved, thank you for your help!

I somehow missed your original post so I'll search for it later. What is the significance of the water cannons?
Amazing photos. The one with his flight buddy holding his head in his hands after viewing the names on the wall was really poignant.

Awesome photos and such a an hornor to and for your dad. Thank you for sharing.
PS, do you know why the lawn is in such poor shape at Arlington?
My father is at Ft Logan National Cemetery and the lawn there is pretty pristine.

The one with his flight buddy holding his head in his hands after viewing the names on the wall was really poignant. From google AI: Water salutes have been used to mark the retirement of a senior pilot or air traffic controller, the first or last flight of an airline to an airport, the first or last flight of a specific type of aircraft, as a token of respect for the remains of soldiers killed in action, or other notable events. That is my absolute favorite picture from the whole day. He told me about the experience there, but when the photo popped up it took my breath. It was just as he described down to the body language of him gripping the wheelchair and holding back emotion for a moment. ðŸ˜

There are a lot of high traffic memorial sites right in this area. It's beautiful all through the grounds. He told me there were hundreds of keep off the grass signs in other areas and a people would just ignore them. He was aggravated that they don't think it applies to them. I've never been to Ft Logan, but I'm sorry for the loss of your father. My grandpa is at Quantico and it's the same. Every spot is perfect.

Oh wow! I actually got a little teared up at the pictures. I think I posted before that I saw an honor flight land at Baltimore and the welcome that the vets got at the airport was so emotional. These men and women deserve all the praise and accolades they can get.
Thanks for sharing.
