Is this where the rumor originated from? A woman in Canton, Ohio was arrested for animal cruelty for eating a cat. She is 27 years-old and does not have a Haitian sounding name. She has no connection to any foreign country. She is pleading not guilty due to insanity. www.yahoo.com/news/fact-check-ohio-woman-accused-003015124.htmlETA - There is also a video you can find on YouTube of this woman being arrested, and it is labeled as a "Haitian woman in Springfield" when it is not.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I just listened to a podcast with the actual 911 calls about this! The podcast was Music City 911, posted 8/29 called Another round of oddities. It had another incident first, then the cat one about 1/2 way through.

Yes, I believe so. She is not Haitian and has a history of mental illness. She is not an illegal immigrant. Some are saying that “others have said” it has happened to them but there are no verified accounts of this, according to authorities. It’s probably similar to the litter boxes in bathrooms story.

Loosely. Local word seems to be that it started in a Facebook group by people looking to start trouble.

I imagine that even if the story didn't use this incident as it's jumping point, that now there will be more people finding it and trying to use it as some sort of "proof" of their ridiculous claims.

Some people will believe any damn thing uncritically. I often say "nothing surprises me", but seriously, I have to admit, some of the things people seem to believe really does blow my mind sometimes. Like kids receiving surgery at school, in the midst of the school day. I don't care what kind of surgery you might think is happening, it's the idea that anyone could hear that and believe it that astounds me. Yet I'm sure there are people out there who did and do. Our school nurse doesn't even stay in one building all day long, so I'm super impressed that she is performing surgery on a cot in a room the size of a closet, with nothing but a few Tylenol and some band-aids at her disposal. That woman deserves quite the raise.

I've heard a couple of places say that's possibly where it came from, but I don't know for sure. Seems like the same type of people who believe it are the ones who believe Chinese restaurants serve cat & dog.

Seems like the same type of people who believe it are the ones who believe Chinese restaurants serve cat & dog. Sadly, I ate a Chinese restaurant one type that had a buffet. I took some type of meat. After tasting it, neither my roommate or I could decide what it was so I didn't eat it. They were closed down a couple of weeks later for serving dog meat. This was 1986. Also, I am going to shock people, but in other countries people eat different animals. I know we see cats and dogs as pets, but that is not true around the world. Some people are limited to what protein they have access to. I can't believe people eat horses, but they do. If you eat meat, you have to accept that any meat is fair game.

If you eat meat, you have to accept that any meat is fair game. Perhaps, but only ones you have legal authority over. Whether you see cats & dogs as meat or not you can’t take someone else’s & eat it. You can’t take your neighbors farm animals that are for consumption & eat it. At minimum that’s theft. And undocumented immigrants try not to tangle with the law to avoid deportation so I highly doubt undocumented immigrants are stealing peoples pets. I have never heard any verified proof that people are stealing pets to eat them. The only pet stealing rumor that I’m familiar with are the pharmaceutical companies buying stolen pets to experiment on. But I do live in an area with several pharmaceutical companies. My neighbors all said you have to be outside with your pet or it’ll be stolen & sold for experiments.

There have been a few stories of people grabbing ducks from some of the local parks in Los Angeles and San Diego. And I am sure it has happened in other places around the US. Here is a video of one guy, and he does not look like an immigrant. youtu.be/N_tkkVaLj8c?si=tSDO3UWfR0y8WMtF

Maybe they should try grabbing a few of those. I'm glad they came back from the brink of extinction after DDT in the 70s but now there are huge flocks everywhere and their poop litters the parks. It's so gross.

I don't have to accept that from a restaurant! Also, I can't think that cats would taste very good. Aren't predators/carnivores normally not very good eating? I guess if you were literally starving, sure, but I'd much rather not eat meat than eat things we consider pets here.

I think many people are aware of different animals being consumed in other countries and it's probably another bit of "evidence" people use to try to tell themselves that these stories are true. But even true incidents such as the restaurant you mentioned are individual situations, and not the same as painting a story of a specific immigrant community all running about stealing people's pet for dinner.

DS says we should see if we can convince people that basil leaves can spontaneously turn into scorpions, as humanity believed that once already, so why not see if they can be convinced again. This leads me to wonder if I perhaps have raised somewhat devious children.

www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/09/11/anatomy-racist-smear-how-false-claims-pet-eating-immigrants-caught/The origin of the unfounded claim seems to be a private Facebook group called “Springfield Ohio Crime and Information,” according to NewsGuard, an apolitical fact-checking organization launched in 2018 by journalist Steven Brill and news executive Gordon Crovitz. A screenshot of a post to the group circulated widely, with an unnamed person claiming that the cat of a friend’s daughter had been hung “from a branch, like you’d do a deer for butchering, & they were carving it up to eat,” referring to a house where Haitian immigrants lived. “They have been doing it at snyder park with the ducks and geese, as I was told that last bit by Rangers & police.”

Pete Butigieg is on CNN now making a lot of sense regarding the spreading of the story of immigrants eating dogs and cats. He says it is a distraction from all of the other issues surrounding Trump. And then now that Vance has said that it is the responsibility of journalists to find out if it is true or not, that also sucks the air from all of the other issues. My thoughts were similar...that it is easier to rile up the base with racist and inflammatory ideas rather than addressing the real issues surrounding immigration that need to be solved.

But to each their own.

Even if it does turn out to be true, Trump and Vance are not being responsible leaders in how they are handling it. They are just riling people up and adding to the hate and aggression towards the immigrants rather than trying to solve the problems in a humane way.

Yes, the video of a mentally unstable American woman in Canton, Ohio that is purposely labeled as a Haitian woman in Springfield, Ohio. People out there are just stirring up hate and trouble for the Haitian community. 😢

This is why I don't understand how anyone can support them. The hate makes me sick. Same thing Trump did with his Jan. 6th followers. Rile up and leave them hanging and wash his hands of the whole thing.
