I feel like I shouldn't complain because it is our tax dollars at work. But wow, just driving home from Costco (which is 10 minutes from my house) has put me in a mood. We have road work everywhere in my town, and it moves -- so just when you think you're safe to get over in the left lane you come around the bend and suddenly the left lane is now blocked. So you get over right, go two blocks, and the new building going up has the right lane blocked with their big crane, so you move left. I know the new building isn't tax dollars, but it still impacts the roads. A few days ago in a section of a well-traveled east-west street (that I try never to drive on because the entire thing, in sections, has had road work for what seems like years) a big truck somehow knocked down several poles and brought down all the wires with it. So not only was the road closed completely for awhile but power was out in the immediate area. At least the weather is nice. I always feel bad for the work crews when they're out there in the blazing heat, or really bitter cold. A friend's husband works on a road crew for the county and he says he prefers cold because they can warm up by working harder, but still it can't be fun when there's a cold wind whipping around them. Anyway, just my rant for today. I'm done with errands so I'm in for the rest of the day. lol

It doesn't even matter here (Atlanta metro) bc there are so many cars traffic just crawls no matter where or how far you are going.
Except at 2AM, when all roads become Nascar time trials tracks.

Yes, but I think that would be about 99.9% of places that people live. Things always need to be done and they seem to be done piece meal. And soon as everything is complete they need to start again because it has taken 10 years. I guess I just consider it the cost of having and maintaining an infrastructure. Big pain in the butt for sure but I whine even worse when the roads have such big pot holes or deep ruts that I am in Jeopardy of losing my car. 😉😄
Being in the Northeast we also have a limited amount of time for such construction before grounds freeze and snow comes.

Oh yes. I live in PA and we have the kind of winter weather that is terrible on roads. We freeze and thaw and refreeze over and over again all winter long, plus we're forever plowing and salting roads--both with rock salt and with liquid, and our roads just are in constant need of repair or replacement.
And that's just basic maintenance, not taking into account major projects. But it results in non-stop road work from late spring through late fall.
Now, I live away from any major city, so we at least don't have any massive traffic rerouting to do when projects are happening, but you do spend months feeling like you can't drive more than a quarter mile without running into road construction equipment.

Maybe it’s because the weather is so mild, but I’m in San Francisco and there really isn’t much road construction. Every now and then there is some on one of the bridges…but streets in the city don’t seem to be affected much.
ETA - I remember though when I worked near DFW for a few months it seemed like there was *constantly* construction! Traffic was horrible.

Major interstate in AR, I30, has been under construction almost as long as I have been alive and/or driving. And no, that is not exaggeration.
ETA: Sorry, I don't live near there and only use it when I have to travel southwest. And I try to avoid it if at all possible. But there is a state highway that I use to get to the 2 older kids. I can't remember in all the time since they were in university to know that it wasn't under some sort of construction. That's been 14 years.

Yes, and we have a genius for moving to the part of town where the next major freeway construction is planned.

In my small town which when we moved there was a small town, or very close to it. A Wal-Mart, Village Inn and McDonalds was about it. A few other fast food.. but no Home Depot/Lowes/Target/etc.
Fast forward, we have all that. So the town is growing and that in the last six months a surge of road construction. What gets me we have two main roads.. WHY are BOTH under construction? You cannot get to the schools anymore in 10 minutes.. it literally takes me like 45 to get to the school or wherever in that direction. I used to take the side road.. now it's under construction along with the main roads. It's STUPID.
Just so irritating. I just can't understand why they don't plan this better.

I live in MI. When we have taken road trips to FL, I much prefer to start traveling about 10 or 11 pm so that I hit Atlanta in the wee hours of the morning. I detest driving through there during any other time. It must be frustrating to live near there.

Yup... We make the drive from northern VA to the Pittsburgh area a few times a year since my parents and father in law are still in that area. Southwest PA is just always a mess in terms of road work. At least when our area does have construction, it seems to be done fairly quickly (at least by comparison).

Constantly. They are putting in a railroad track along a busy stretch of road and it's been lots of lane closures and re-routing. Luckily, I don't drive that road all of the time but I'm not sure when they are actually going to be finished!

We have a short construction season, so multiple projects are always happening. Our governor ran on a platform to "fix the damn roads" and she is making good on her promise!
I always tell people that they cant complain about how bad the roads are and then also complain about the construction!

I always tell people that they cant complain about how bad the roads are and then also complain about the construction! I am thinking we both live in the same state. Given that they plan to have so many projects going on that impact roads that are along similar travel paths, I think we are allowed to complain a bit. Every day it is a new lane closure, frequently with little to no warning. It is hard to plan a morning commute around that.

Yes, there is a lot of construction going on around us. One is going on right outside our development. They said it should take about 2 yrs to get it finished. Our streets inside the development are also getting broken, oiled and new asphalt going on them as well. They said it's suppose to help the drainage. It's taking longer then what was planned because of all the rain we've been having.

@monklady..... you just reminded me of when I lived in Virginia, but worked in Maryland. The construction of the Cabin John Bridge made my commute BRUTAL !!!!!
Not construction-related, but one day, driving from Maryland back to Virginia, snow started falling. I sat on the beltway for soooo many hours, I kept falling asleep at the wheel.

I live in South Florida so my entire life there has been year round road construction. All kinds of construction. If you leave town for a month, when you return everything is different.
The area I moved to six years ago was relatively undeveloped, but no more. No exaggeration, a mile and a half west of me there is a new development and they are building 3,900 houses, hotel and high end private golf course.
There is only one four lane road that leads to the major expressways which are about seven and nine miles away. So now after building and selling about half the houses they are adding extra lanes. Traffic is dreadful and hope we never have to evacuate for a storm prior to completion, it will be gridlock. Only advantage is the development has a town center so new stores and restaurants will be nearby.
I do not know life without road and other construction.

Ditto for Houston! Yes, and we have a genius for moving to the part of town where the next major freeway construction is planned. We purposely bought in an area where I can go almost anywhere without getting on a freeway. But lately it seems like every surface route I use is under major construction. As soon as I find an alternate route, they rip that one up too.

Anything involving a bridge around here is bad news because there are so few of them. I come from Pittsburgh originally, known as The City of Bridges, so having access to only a few bridges to get from here to there is so odd. An incident on the Memorial Bridge can snarl traffic in the entire DC/VA/MD area for hours and hours.

There is a small area close to me that has been dug up 5 times this year by gas and water companies. The most recent dig was to see what they’d done last time because apparently no one had noted it anywhere 🙄 You couldn’t make it up.
