In my thread about “tour”, someone mentioned that “hour” and “our” are pronounced the same. Also, “our” and “are” are pronounced differently. Do you agree or not?
To me, “hour” is almost two syllables, “our” is one syllable. “Our” and “are” are pronounced the same in my neck of the woods.
You can pick two choices in the poll.

For me hour and our sound the same hou/ou say "ow" + r Are is "R" (name of the letter not the sound of the letter) When I want to exaggerate the word “our”, I may drag it out and say it like “hour”. For example, telling someone “That is OUR seat, get out” vs “Yes, that is our seat, but you are fine to stay there”. But the majority of the time, I say “our” and “are” the same - “R”.

Hour has two syllables, and is pronounced differently than our and are, which have one syllable and sound identical.

Hour and our are different. Hour sounds like ow-er, but almost one syllable.
Our and are, the same, both sound like r.

For me, Hour & Our are exactly the same. OW-er. But said almost as one syllable. It's not a drawn out 2 syllable word, but just barely. And after the last thread, I did try using "our" in a few sentences, spoken very quickly to see if it ever morphs into "are", but for me it doesn't--it does flatten out a bit, when I say it really fast, but not so much to just sound like I'm saying the name of the letter "R", which is how I say "are".

If I read the word “our” I pronounce it differently from “are”. But in a sentence, “our” is almost always pronounced the same as “are”. We coarticulate…we get lazy. It’s a natural part of speech. Try saying the sentence “Come over to our house tonight.” NATURALLY. Do you say HOUR or ARE?

It depends who I’m talking to! In Scots ‘our' is pronounced (and spelled) 'oor', so a bit like 'tour' but the vowel is shorter. If I’m just talking to friends I would say oor, but in a more formal situation, it would definitely sound identical to 'hour'. 😁

Try saying the sentence “Come over to our house tonight.” NATURALLY. Do you say HOUR or ARE? hmm... you're right! lol. I replied that they're different, and they are if you pronounce them individually. But in a casual sentence "our" does sound like "are". Unless you're intending to emphasis "our"... Like: First person -- hey, let's go to our house tonight" ["our" sounds like "are"] Second person -- no, we went there last time, let's go to OUR house tonight [sounds like "hour" because Second person is emphasizing it] I love this type of thread!

Yes, that’s the first thing I thought of that hour has 2 syllables. Sometimes I say our like owr and other times I say it like are. But my answer in a Grammer book would be owr. I think I have put Andy Grammer in a lot because it autocorrect my lowercase g to upper case ☺️ And I think I typed grammar but maybe not lol Maybe “are” when I’m not thinking about what I’m saying and owr when I am.

I’ll have to get someone to secret record me next time I read something with “our” in it without my being aware of it to know how I say it in reading 😋

The fact that some of you pronounce our and are the same boggles me. The way I say it there is absolutely nothing in common except the "r" sound. Our (and hour) are both two syllables and have the same first sound as the "ow" in owl, followed by a schwa and a "r" sound. Are is pronounced like you are saying the letter R - one syllable.

I've come to realize that I pronounce words differently depending on the time, place and audience. Years of voice training rounded my vowels and made "our" and "hour" roughly the same. If you've ever spoken with a voice major there's, um, almost a standard and kind of affected-sounding speech pattern that they use. I tend to still use that pattern when speaking in public, in meetings with admin, etc.
But in casual conversation now, either my old midwestern flat vowels or the Texas twang comes out and "our" sounds like "are."
