I didnt want to derail that one thread, but one of the things I would like to know, is not having a grand tub (meaning, it has jets) in the master bathroom a deal breaker? We will probably downsize in 8-10 years, so one of the things I am going to do is contact our old real estate agents and ask them their thoughts. Because, I actually would like to take out our tub - we used it when the kids were little, but we never use it now (I call it the dust bowl). I would love to take out our shower and move it where the tub is now, and make the current shower a linen closet or something... Or I could keep the tub, it's fine... I just dont know if we could make the shower any bigger, and we'd like to. Here is our current layout (sinks are on the other side, and I am standing by our closet doors):

I consider tubs, particularly the free standing ones, a negative in the master bath. First, I don't see how people get in and out without killing themselves (HA) and since I don't take baths, they take up space and are just one more thing to clean.
More importantly, if you are selling within a couple of years, what changes you make matter. otherwise, love the house you are in and enjoy it the way you want it.

Not having a bath wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me, I hate baths and can't remember the last time I had one. A nice big shower is much more appealing.

I prefer no tub and a large shower. My new place has a 5' shower and I love it.

It takes SO much water to fill the damn thing, and I swear its cooling off before I feel I have gotten a worthwhile time in it. I am not a big reader in the tub, but I do realize lots of people do enjoy a soak. However, we have tubs in three other bathrooms, just regular tubs tho. If I were desperate enough to need or want a bath, any of those others would totally work!

We remodeled 3 years ago and the first thing on the list was to get rid of the giant tub. It was nothing but a dust collector. We already had a really large shower, so I replaced tub with a big makeup vanity. I’m a little worried for when we sell, but there are 3 other tubs upstairs.

No tub and a large shower in our current primary bath. That's how we like it. I don't like baths at all. Bathtubs with jets are gross to me - I've seen horror stories of the jets having mold in them that shoots out when they're turned on.
I'm fine with keeping the tub/shower in the secondary bath in case of young kids, but in nine years no one has ever used that tub for a bath.

I feel like as long as a house has one bathtub go for it. I feel a house should have one tub for little ones.. doesn't have to be some big jetted thing. A shower like you are describing is much more appealing in my opinion.

I don’t have one in my master bathroom. I wish I did, but it was not a deal-breaker; we have three bathtubs in the house, just not one in my bathroom.

I don't have a master bath. But I think a free standing bath is fine if you enjoy having one. We have an old fashioned tub/shower combo and I'm happy with that right now. I'd only want a free standing tub if I also had room for a separate shower, though. I love old houses and so I've been in many of the older houses in town over the years as we have been house hunting at different point in time, and there are still a decent number of homes in my town with no upstairs bathroom at all. And I have to say, the idea of having to head downstairs and through 3, 4, or more rooms to finally use the bathroom makes me want to cry. So the main bathroom being just outside my bedroom door is okay with me. I just saw a house listed locally that has no upstairs bathroom, AND it has a walk-though bedroom, so whoever uses that room literally has 6 rooms and a flight of stairs between them and the bathroom during the night or first thing in the morning.

We didn’t have a tub in the primary bath in our last house…just a large shower. Our real estate agent said it was fine as long as we had a tub in another bathroom (which we did).
We just sold that house, to a family with kids.

I’d dump that tub in a heartbeat in lieu of a giant shower especially since there are others in the house. We have a big soaking tub in ours that we literally haven’t used in over 7? 8? years, not since it was easier to wash DD’s long hair in the shower. It takes a ton of hot water which always cools off too fast, it’s a hazard getting in and out of it, it’s a hassle to clean plus I don’t like taking baths in general.
Our master has a pretty big shower that the previous owners remodeled around 2000, and why they didn’t go the extra 12-18” deeper (there was space for it) that they could have and added a bench I’ll never know. It’s literally just wasted space behind the door that’s not big enough for a drying rack or anything else, and there’s already a big linen cabinet in there too. It’s so dumb.
I’d go for big, with a bench or seat, zero entry, with no doors or curtain to clean. But that’s just me.

I despise jetted tubs. Our master has a large soaking tub. Deeper and a little wider than a normal tub. Love it. Use it daily.
Jets get so gross and have upkeep I don't want to deal with.
Master must have a regular tub for me.

Yes, it would be a deal breaker for us. We both use it almost every night. We are doing a remodel of both bathrooms, making a walk in shower only in the guest, but a shower and free standing tub in the master. I love a good soak!
Jetted tubs are a no no though, unless it’s brand new. I’m not a germaphobe by any stretch of the imagination, but those give me the heebie jeebies.

Remove the tub, install a full walk in shower where the tub is. We took the old shower and made it a closet! The absolute best things we did. In that closet was our towels, vacuum, meds and whatever else I needed to store. We had 2 other bathrooms with tubs and one other with just a shower. Tubs are overrated unless you have little ones that want to play in it. A new owner won't know what was there. I can try to message you a photo if you want it. I can't seem to post a photo. It always says it won't work no matter what the size it.

I recently remodeled my master bathroom. Got rid of the tub and had a beautiful large walk in shower installed. One of the best decisions ever.

We were questioning the same thing when we redid our primary bathroom in 2022. We did ask a realtor friend who told us as long as there’s one tub in the house you’re good. We replaced ours with a sit-down vanity, which has been great, since my back issues are getting worse. I’ve missed having the tub a few times but I used DS’s tub and it was ok

We have a similar setup and have talked about making the same change for years.
The only thing that holds me back (aside from $!) is that I have used the tub a handful of times after surgery and when feeling ill. I've needed help getting in and out, so it's not ideal as we age for sure, but those soaks were beneficial. If we stay, pretty sure we'll eventually make the change.

I am taking the tub out of my master bath that we are about to remodel in my new home. It's just a typical tub shower combo and I am replacing it with a tiled shower that will be deeper and have dual shower heads, one on each side. The tub/shower combo will remain in the guest bath.
My current house that goes on the market this week is just a walk-in shower in the master and tub/shower in the guest bath.

We had a clawfoot tub. I wanted a soaking tub. Our builder put in the cheapest, smallest tub. We removed it. No tub is not a dealbreaker for me.

Our last house, which we lived in for 23 years, had a huge jetted tub. Never used it once. Only filled it before we put the house on the market to make sure it still worked. We also have a tub in this house, will never use it.
So I don't care if the master has a tub, but I know some people will.

in our main house, we have the original tub from 1927... big and long. we gutted the bathroom but kept that tub. we added to a toilet a sink and shower to make a second bathroom.
in our condo, we took out the tub/shower and put in a walk in shower. best thing is we put the controls on the opposite wall from the shower head, so you can turn it on without being under it. a detachable head makes cleaning easy.

Not a deal breaker. I haven't taken a bath since I was 6 or 7? I would much rather have no tub and a nice walk-in shower. Baths are kinda nasty IMO.

We have a tub like yours, jetted huge monster. We’ve probably only used it twice in over 20 years. It takes way too much water to fill. If we ever remodel, I want to replace it with a smaller tub, and enlarge the shower. I also want to redo the second bathroom and put a walk-in shower and remove the tub. The master will still have a tub, so it should be fine for resale purposes. But a tub in the master bathroom is not a deal breaker for us. And no tub in the entire house would not be a deal breaker for us.

A freestanding shower, no tub was on my wish list for the en suite when we were househunting. It didn't happen and we have a tub/shower combo. I had a big garden tub a couple of houses ago and while it was fun for small kids, it was a pain to clean and honesstly didn't get much use. I wouldn't do a free standing tub again.
IF you're looking to sell soon AND your house is likely to sell to families with young children, making sure there is at least one tub in the house is a good idea. Otherwise, do what works best for you

Our new-to-us house had one. Colossal waste of space. We took it out and I don't regret it one bit. When we sell it, if it's a dealbreaker for someone, they can keep looking! (There is one tub elsewhere in teh house)

It's not a dealbreaker for me, as long as I have a tub somewhere I can occasionally soak. We don't have one in our master but we have a freestanding in our kids' jack and jill. I hate jetted tubs either way. I'd prefer an oversized shower with multiple heads. Our master has a large corner shower with 7 shower heads, each with an independent valve. Perks of owning a plumbing company.

In our current home, we had the bathtub removed in the main bath and turned that space into a tiled shower. The other bath is so small, it only has room for a shower. No tub in our house which is fine with us. We want our house as we want it, not for a potential sale in the future.

My last home didn't have a tub in the master and while it obviously wasn't a deal breaker, I did miss having a soaking tub. I had to scrub out the tub in the kids' bathroom when I wanted to soak.
Sometimes after a long stretch at work or after working out hard, my whole body aches and I just need to soak in a hot bath.
This house has a soaking tub in the master (no jets, it's just a large tub) and a separate shower. I really love having it. I wouldn't like having jets to clean so this is perfect.
