Have we ever discussed the mega-King size beds that exist now? Standard Alaskan King= 9 feet x 9 feet "Biggie" = 12 feet x 9 feet "Mini"= 8 feet x 8 feet ______________________________________ For reference: Standard King= 6.33 feet wide x 6.66 feet long California King= 6 feet wide x 7 feet long Wyoming King= 7 feet x 7 feet So here's my burning question---how do you wash a comforter for a 9 x 9 or 12 x 9 size bed??? I have a queen size bed and we do not use a comforter on that, but less bulky coverings instead, and we can wash all of those easily at home, even though we purposely own a smaller than average washing machine. I can't see even the machines at the local laundromat being able to handle a comforter that's comparable in size to the area of a small room, and I don't even know if professional laundry services are equipped for something of that size? I guess it depends on the business. Size examples online show parents with a few toddlers/preschoolers/animals in bed with them. Now, my kids each spent a decent amount of time in bed with DH & I over their early years, and I'm here to tell you, we washed our bedding a LOT. So it just sounds like a huge hassle to launder these things as often as they might need it. (I do realize that isn't always the reason people opt to buy these beds.) So, anyone have any insights on some easy way to deal with this bedding that I'm overlooking? Burn it and buy new?

I would use two different comforters/duvets - one for each half of the bed - no fighting over covers and easier to wash. (we actually do this with blankets on our standard king bed)

(we actually do this with blankets on our standard king bed) That would certainly be easier! (While we do keep one large quilt over top of everything on our bed, underneath, we do both use our own sheet/blanket combos. We sleep so much better that way. I sleep hot, he sleeps cold. But also, and oddly, I like my sheet/blankets tucked all up against me, where Dh just wants to lay them out over the top of himself. So we're total opposite in how we use bed linens.)

Wow, that's huge!! So here's my burning question---how do you wash a comforter for a 9 x 9 or 12 x 9 size bed??? We have a normal King bed, and we wash our doona (duvet/comforter) at the laundromat. We only wash the doona once or twice a year. The doona cover gets washed every week or two, in our washing machine. Alternatively, I would do what Linda said, and have two separate doonas. We sometimes use separate doonas, especially in winter, and I love it - there's no pulling and fighting over the doona! I've never heard of a California, Wyoming, or Alaskan King. I've only heard of a King and Super King.

We have a standard king, and I'm considering moving to twin top sheets and comforters. In the winter, DH rolls over and takes all the sheet and blankets with him. Then he gets pissed when I try to pull them back. We let it get cold upstairs overnight in winter (60-62). We used to let it get into the 50s (great for sleeping) but warming the house up took a lot of energy. Plus waking up frozen because he's hogging all the covers is never fun.

I would hate to make that bed. We have a California King and I hate changing the sheets. We are able to wash everything at home. I can see 9’x9’ bedding fitting in our home washing machine. Larger than that, I don’t know.

They skipped right over Texas, huh? Lol
I get a little grossed out when I see those pics with the entire family and like 4 dogs in the bed. It feels like it's going to be full of fur and crumbs and toys and stuff.
I wouldn't like the look of multiple blankets on top but I agree it would be hard to have just one blanket. It's hard enough to wash my regular king sized comforter.
(I do let the dog on the bed, which I never did with past dogs, but it's like she's being raised by grandparents instead of parents and the rules are a bit more lax for her. Plus she doesn't shed much or smell really)

So for those of you that split the covers, how does that work exactly? What kind of overlap is there? I have a King and have always just used the sets for that size, covers, comforters, duvets, etc for that size. However, I get the tugging and pulling "fights" that happen in the winter. Summer not so much. But I sleep hot. If I don't have the ceiling fan and another smaller fan on my bedside table blowing on me, I am miserable. My DH has to sleep with a pillow due to a bad shoulder break. I wake up in the middle of the night ANGRY that the pillow is laying/touching on me. The thought of additional covers just sends me over the edge. So if I get twin top sheets and a twin blanket for him, where does the extra go? Does it not hang out from under the top cover/comforter/quilt?

And that's why I feel like these things are going to be really laundered well fairly frequently. Plus, just simple things, like the fact that kids can wet the bed no matter whose bed they are in, after all. Plus, honestly, looking at the drawings of these beds, they have acres more space than they need even with 2 adults, 2 kids, and 2 pets. It's like even the cat & dog have to sleep in starfish position to fill this bed.

We tend to have a empty strip between us--it's like the border between US & Canada. We're fine with cuddling in bed at the beginning of the night, but when it's time to actually sleep it becomes "stay away from me!"

Those bed sizes are ridiculous! If I had one of those in my bedroom, I wouldn’t be able to open the bedroom door. 😄

I don't really get the point of such a huge bed but maybe I don't have enough imagination.

DH tends to wrap himself up in the covers so no overhang on his side - I run hot and spend half the night tossing the covers off so mine tend to end up as a border wall, lol. We're fine with cuddling in bed at the beginning of the night, but when it's time to actually sleep it becomes "stay away from me!" I'm definitely a don't touch me when it's time for sleeping

This is exactly why we each use our own blankets, because dh steals them. We do use one top sheet but it's a king sheet on a queen bed. That way there's plenty of extra. But if he manages to steal that I still have *my* blanket for warmth. lol I do have a bedspread-type thing (not a quilt) that goes over the whole bed when I make it so it still looks neat, but I don't use that when sleeping because it's not soft.

We bought a perfectly typical size sofa recently and had a dickens of a time trying to get it into the house.

The largest I've ever heard of is a California King and even that seems excessively large. I wouldn't want to deal with moving a 9 foot bed, buying sheets and blankets for it, etc. It all seems very difficult and very expensive.
