Talking about Tupperware made me think about businesses that have closed because they did not change their business model fast enough. I started seeing Tupperware at Target this year, but maybe they should have branched out to retailers sooner than they did.
And Sears! For one, they stuck with malls, even though malls were dying. They didn’t seek out stand alone stores like Walmart or Target. They also had the infrastructure in place to really expand with online shopping, but they concentrated on their b&m stores. Many department stores are in trouble too.
I have noticed that Michaels is pushing their online sales, and they carry many products that they don’t in their physical stores.
What stores do you see that are failing to keep up with the changing times?

Best Buy. They stopped selling real dvd's and the machines to play them on and guess what's having a resurgence?

I thought I was one of the few that still used them. Streaming is fine until you want to watch something and can't find anyone streaming it, and the stupid commercials... Yes, owning physical media is becoming popular again. |

I've heard that the rumor is that in 2025, Target will stop selling DVD's in-store but they'll be available on-line. They may have selected titles in-store, like around the holidays.

The convenience of online shopping is contributing to more and more B&M stores closing. I don’t see my local Michaels being around much longer especially since a Hobby Lobby opened a few years ago just a mile away. Like Sears and Bed, Bath & Beyond it won’t be long before JC Penney’s goes to online only.

Sears quality went way down when they were bought out by KMart in 2004. Their Craftsman brand and their appliances used to be great and after the buy out, they were horrible as was their customer service. That was the beginning of the end for them.

I was pleasantly surprised to see good quality name brands in their store. Hobby Lobby has gone to mostly carrying their name brand. Of course, I am probably not a Hobby Lobby targeted customer because I don't care for all the home decorating stuff. We have two Hobby Lobby's fairly close to two Michael's. The Michael's are still there and no signs of closing, and it has been over 5 years since the last Hobby Lobby opened up. I don't know how JC Penney's is holding on. They did partner with Sephora, and our local Penney's has a Sephora store in it. What is funny though is that there is full-sized Sephora store across from Penney's in the mall. |

They closed 2-3 years ago. They’ve completely demolished the building. I’m not sure what’s going in there…maybe apartments/condos?

Before malls were a thing, we had a huge Sears just on the outskirts of downtown LA. It was a massive building, and served as a distribution center with lots of truck bays. It was also near the railroad tracks. It would have been great for online distribution if they could have seen the future with a crystal ball. The building is still there, and it even has it's own Wikipedia page. It is on the Historic registry list, so I don't know if it can be completely demolished or not. Sears Los Angeles |

I think Bath and Body works current obsession with musk, sandalwood, cedar, and "woods" is about to push me completely away. They cant just make a citrus body wash and keep stocking it. Coconut Lime Breeze is gone, Sun-washed Citrus is gone, Iced Lemon Poundcake is gone, and Kitchen Lime is gone. I bought one that was Clementine something. It had an over powering musk/patchouli smell. If I wanted perfumey soap, Id buy it!
This has been today's vent.
I have also recently remembered that The Body Shop is no more. I liked their stuff, but it was pricey

Sears should have been Amazon. They had the catalouges & call centre which could have easily swtiched to a website and online orders, distrubuters- trucks, warehouses. They had outlets (pick up spots) in every small town. They had stores. No reason they should have gone under. It worked well for rural people.

Didn't Amazon start as an online bookstore? I can remember when all you could get was books from them. AND they were very expensive plus no free shipping. Some of my college textbooks had to come from Amazon. They made the switch and really profited by it.

Textbooks could have been a special case, but I think they always offered some kind of discount on books. It is why I used to buy so many novels from them. It was cheaper than buying it from most B&M stores. Which is what put a lot of B&M bookstores out of business. And I think it was free shipping after $25 way back then. |

Have to give Target props for having a reasonable selection of clothing, linens and toys. They’ve survived where toys r us, BB&B, linens n things and sears did not. I think part of the issue is having good buyers who stay with the trends.

I wondered if Penney's still had Sephora because I was in Kohl's not long ago and they have a Sephora store inside now. I haven't been inside the Penney's lately, but I wonder too now. I had to look it up and couldn't find a yes or no. Some reviews make it seem like they are still there, others say no. But I did read that Sephora did not renew their agreement with Penney's, that is why they are at Kohl's now. It is funny that when I went to the Sephora inside Penney's once, they didn't carry what I wanted. So, they sent me across the hall to their store, which had it. |

Other than Sears, TRU, BB&B, and Linens n Things, sort of specialized in certain goods. Someone can instead go to Target and get a lot of different items, at good prices, and in trendy styles. |

Plus a Target, too. Walmart is on the other side of the street. |
