abc7.com/post/california-gov-gavin-newsom-signs-law-banning-plastic-shopping-bags-grocery-stores/15340534/So Newsom signed a bill that will ban the thicker reusable bags in 2026. They aren't properly being recycled or reused and are causing issues with the environment. So in 2026 you either need your own bags or will be given the choice to buy paper. Funny thing is, Stater Bros does paper for curbside pick ups but does not offer it as an option in store. I really like their paper bags and that is what I grew up with. (And saved to cover books) I have several paper bags saved and also have 5 plastic reusable bags for my fresh meats. I will have to find reusable bags I like that will be designated for meats. It was easier to recycle than wash if any juice leaked.

I don’t like those thick useable bags. If I have to get one, I recycle it and don’t even reuse then. So it doesn’t bother me if they ban them. I don’t mind the paper bags, and will even pay for one. We still have a bunch saved from earlier times. Our Stater Bros doesn’t offer pick up service, so they don’t even have the paper bags in the store. There is a local grocery store that has paper bags, and then of course, Trader Joe’s.
As for meats, the stores have plastic bags in the meat department so I just put the meat in them in case of leakage. But at Stater’s, I buy meat from the butcher counter, so those are wrapped in plastic and then paper.

They are completely banned in CT and while everyone thought the sky was falling it seems to me that most people have adjusted really well. I don't ever hear anyone complain about bringing their own bags.

Thank God. Wish it would roll out sooner. I do grocery pick up and even though I say I don’t want bags, everything comes in bags. I leave the bags with the people at the store, but I don’t imagine they reuse them. I have no idea why those thick plastic bags ever became a thing. It should have been paper only all along.

We have been no plastic bags (paper or bring your own only) since we went to no one use bags and I have not had a problem with meats.
Our state still allows small plastic for produce or to put your meat in, so those are typically available. I mostly use the cubes now and have one that I use for meat that is wipeable, but I also still have some of the heavy thick plastic type bags that you can buy at store for around 1.00. I use a couple of those exclusively for meat as 99% of the time there is no issue of leakage, but if there is I don’t have any issue getting rid of it if it is bad enough.

So what are these “thicker” plastic bags? We don’t have a ban but the store I go to does so I use the type that Trader Joe’s sells. Is that what you’re referring to?

Typical plastic bag that is thin and see thru: Thicker reusable grocery bags (Vons, Stater Bros, Target, Albertson's has these): These bags are bigger and very thick. You have to recycle them at the store or if your city can process them. But people just toss them. And because they are thick they cause issues with water ways, with animals, etc.

Like why did we ever go away from paper bags??
I have used reusable for 16 or so years, like when they first started to be available. But before then I always got paper bags.

Thank you for clarifying. To me those were barely any different. I just took a huge bag of bags to the recycling shed at my grocery. My dh always claims no one else does it but every time I do the shed is stuffed full.

I have so many of those thick plastic bags - if you do delivery or pick up there seems to be no way to avoid them - even if you ask for no bags.
I'm happy to see them banned.
Target pick up is the worst offender - I've picked up 5 small items and received five bags.

It's hard to tell by pictures but the thicker bags are actually very thick and quite bulky if you try to store them.

I bought a bundle of 100 paper grocery bags at Costco for a LOT less than 8¢ each. I use fold up cloth boxes; they fold flat, fit in the cart, are very sturdy, and have straps for carrying.

Texas will never do this, but we should. There's no reason to be using disposable plastic bags in 2024.

I believe it was because we were using so many and it was thought it would be better if fewer trees were used for bags. Small stores here can still use plastic, but everyone else is reusable or paper for ten cents

The only time we get plastic bags is whey we do an instacart order. Sometimes they'll bring the groceries in paper but most of the time it's plastic. I'm glad they're finally doing away with plastic.

So what are these “thicker” plastic bags? The thicker plastic bags were brought in by some stores when single use plastic bags were banned a few years ago. It was silly as my DH might be the only person in the state who reuses them. Most people just treat them as single use. I have a good collection of reusable bags and produce bags in my car and rarely go in a store without one or 4. If I forget (usually going into Target) or deliberately never bring them in (Costco), I just have everything loaded in the cart and bag at the car. I'm just fine with completely eliminating plastic bags.

Oh yay, I can't wait to hear everyone in my town bitch about this constantly. The move to ban the thin plastic bags and bring in the thicker "reusable" plastic bags was idiotic from the get go. Any time I forget my own bag and need a bag I ask for paper if it's available. I don't understand why we ever went away from paper bags. They're biodegradable and can be used for crafts, kids school projects, etc.

We use the resuable bags from various stores, have a few freezer bags as well. The grocery stores I shop at still use the very, very, thin ones to put meat and produce in, so I don' thave to worry so much about the meat contaminating other items.

And thicker bags came with the claim that they can be reused 50 times, or something like that.
Some stores are still allowed to use the thin single use plastic bags, like restaurants and some stores like Home Depot still have the thin ones for free. I was just at some other store and they asked if I wanted a bag, for free. I can’t remember what store it was.

I remember the paper bags having a percentage of being recycled paper. I want to say 30%.
I have had leaks even with the produce plastic bags.
I want easier to wash bags so will get some from Amazon. Like the tee shirt style. I use Stater's zip bags that are for hot/cold so they are harder to wash to disinfect.

I like the old thin plastic bags for litter box duty.
The thicker ones get folded into triangles and dumped into an old peanut butter pretzel container from Costco that lives in my classroom. We often end up needing bags at school so I’ve got them.
My favorite reusable bags are the ones that have a pouch they fold into. I have a large textbook publisher zipper bag that lives in my trunk- I shove all my fabric bags into it and zip it shut. DH has one in his car too.
I am 100% ok with the plastic bags going completely away. If I forget my bags I just pile it back into the cart and either bag it in my trunk or load everything randomly into my trunk. I’d love to have organized boxes but DH hates trunk “clutter” and bitches about my trunk if he takes my car. 😂

The original plastic bag ban contributed to a hepatitis A outbreak in San Diego because our unhoused population couldn’t find bags to number 2 into anymore. I wish they’d just bring back the thin plastic bags and paper bags only. I’ll still pay for a plastic bag because 99% of the time I bring my own.

I leave one open as it houses my reusable bags. Then the other is used when we take trips. After shopping at the store, bottled water for ds goes in the crates. That way they don't roll around or get stuck in my netting. And they come in handy for Costco trips to store items we can't fit in bags or their boxes. Like soap, toys, etc.

I got into using canvas bags way back when living in CA in the late 90s. I remember moving to VA and proudly bringing my bags to the grocery in the early 2000s and they looked at me like I was crazy lol. CO now has no plastic bags/charges 10 cents for paper. But honestly I miss the thin bags for dog duty and bathroom trash cans. So now I bring crates/bags to the grocery but buy plastic bags for trash and dog waste. Doesn’t seem like it’s making much difference. 😬🤷♀️

The only reason I would miss having a few plastic bags around is because I use them to put out items for people from the local Buy Nothing group. That's extent of my use of plastic grocery bags. And I could certainly come up with a new method easily enough. I'd probably just start expressing interest in any of 50 million posts giving away used decorative gift bags. We could all just keep swapping gift bags along with "Stuff".
