Like why did we ever go away from paper bags?? I have used reusable for 16 or so years, like when they first started to be available. But before then I always got paper bags. I believe it was because we were using so many and it was thought it would be better if fewer trees were used for bags. Small stores here can still use plastic, but everyone else is reusable or paper for ten cents Small stores can use plastic here?? I haven't heard of that before. What stores? I know restaurants can use them. I am a hoarder of plastic bags now. I need them for poop cleanup.. I have a HUGE dog so HUGE poop. I have gotten creative though. I save all kinds of weird things to dump it in. lol

Guess she is buying a lot of small packets of nails, screws, bolts, etc we just have everything in our cart to place items in our bags in the trunk or the foldable crates.

I got into using canvas bags way back when living in CA in the late 90s. I remember moving to VA and proudly bringing my bags to the grocery in the early 2000s and they looked at me like I was crazy lol. We went through culture shock/shopping bag shock when we moved to TN. We were so used to bringing our own bags (in California) but they were still packed in the POD when we got here. We went to the grocery store and freaked out because they were putting like 1 item in a bag. It's the wild west when it comes to any sort of recycling around here!

But honestly I miss the thin bags for dog duty and bathroom trash cans. So now I bring crates/bags to the grocery but buy plastic bags for trash and dog waste. Doesn’t seem like it’s making much difference. 😬🤷♀️ I agree. I use any plastic bag that comes into my house for dog poop. Amazon bags, clothing order bags, thin grocery bags, etc all become poop bags. Until they figure out how to recycle plastic bags (and not just collect them somewhere), that’s what I do with them. When I run out, I use compostable poop bags. I can never decide if that’s the best route, or using all those plastic bags. But I feel like if I’m throwing them away, at least they are getting a second purpose. And I may be the only one who likes those thicker bags. I only do pickup occasionally, so I only get 2-3 at a time, but they are great for sending leftovers home with the kid or the loads of tomatoes my parents send home with me. I fold them into squares and keep them in a bin in the laundry room. But I only have a few of them.

It depends on the store and city too. In one city, Michaels and B&N charges for bags, yet Home Depot and TJ Maxx does not. In the next city over, Michaels still give out free plastic bags. The CA law was originally for grocery stores, but many cities adopted it to include all store. And I think some stores charge just because they can now.

As for CO there are no plastic bags (except for restaurants). Everything else is BYOBag or buy a .10 brown bag. I don't think she meant by small things, I thought she meant smaller type stores.

And thicker bags came with the claim that they can be reused 50 times, or something like that. Some stores are still allowed to use the thin single use plastic bags, like restaurants and some stores like Home Depot still have the thin ones for free. I was just at some other store and they asked if I wanted a bag, for free. I can’t remember what store it was. Home Depot here charges for them or maybe it’s Lowe’s. I know at least one of them charges here.

I did (although it likely depends on your municipality). Our local grocery store still uses plastic bags.
