I want to start doing some yoga. I am a beginner and I’ve done a couple of workouts with video the past week. My question is what is the best position for your laptop/ipad/monitor? When I am doing most movements that require you to stand, I am fine. But when I need to lie down, it feels so awkward trying to watch the video while doing the movement. I feel like I am getting out of position when I try to look at the video. I am a beginner, so I need to watch what the instructor is doing. I’ve been moving my iPad when I lie down, then move it again when I stand up. Do I just need to get more familiar with the movements?

Move the iPad as needed while you’re beginning. When you’re more familiar with the poses, you won’t need to look as much.

At home yoga is on my list to try this fall but I wasn't sure where to find good beginner videos (though I wonder if Peloton has some? I have that already).

Adriene’s YouTube videos are fabulous - linked to above. She is so good and easy to watch. There is a Facebook page Yoga with Adriene and also a pay for App Find What Feels Good.
It is tricky trying to watch and do the movements, some say to watch the whole video first but that didn’t help me.

You will get familiar with the movements and not need to really look up much when you get into the routine.

I generally move the laptop with me, but a good teacher will cue clearly so you don't need to look.
If you are a beginner, I would highly recommend attending an in person class to learn the basics and be observed. A good teacher can really help you with proper technique and modifications to avoid injury. Look for a small studio vs. gym type offerings.
Yoga with Adrienne is great and she does explain things well. I do her 30 day yoga in January, it's a great way to start the year.

scrapcat We have a lot of yoga studios in the area, but I am truly confused on which ones to go to and what type of yoga they offer. We just had a new one open up, but I know they are hot yoga, and I don’t want that. What type of yoga should I look for?

Thank you for posting this and the included link. I have been wanting to start a gentle yoga because my friend that taught it said that it is very helpful for people with fibromyalgia and she encouraged me to look into doing it. I have so much on my plate right now, but I am also noticing so much more daily pain and stiffness. Just climbing up my stepladder is so difficult for me. I purchased a knee brace and that has helped a lot, but I need flexibility again. I think if I can increase flexibility, I can probably accomplish more each day, especially if I can lower the increased pain that I have been dealing with lately.
I had a doctor’s appointment last Friday and I asked her to increase my antidepressant medication. I am not depressed and not having more panic attacks, but the fibro pain is becoming unbearable and that is why I was prescribed the antidepressant originally. After the scare with that one medication sending me to the depths, I was very nervous to go back on anything. My doctor told me to start out taking one pill and if I felt it wasn’t adequate pain relief and did not bring on any negative side effects, start taking two. That was before moving to Oregon, and I was afraid to increase it, but I have to admit to myself that the one pill just isn’t enough. Now that I know an antidepressant can cause severe depression, I know what to watch out for and I started taking two pills on Saturday.
I have a thicker exercise mat that I hope should be ok for yoga. And I have already unpacked it so I can start out today. Thank you!

I do the Peloton yoga classes and I really like them. Ross is my favorite instructor but he left so no more live classes from him. For the OP, I would suggest getting a full length mirror and prop it up where you can see yourself in poses. I always thought I was super low in my Warrior 2 pose until I watched myself in a mirror. It's very helpful for correcting your poses.

Lexica a thicker yoga mat is good. If you're not on carpet you could double up your mats. Also have a folded towel or blanket or a small flat pillow to help you with some positions. OP, I remember in the beginning I felt like I spent half the time looking or watching the tv. Each time you need to look a but less until you just listen. Yoga With Kassandra is really good also. I find with Adrienne's videos there is more strength involved. I find just doing a 10-15 minute routine a few times and week really keeps the muscles looser.

scrapcat We have a lot of yoga studios in the area, but I am truly confused on which ones to go to and what type of yoga they offer. We just had a new one open up, but I know they are hot yoga, and I don’t want that. What type of yoga should I look for? Check out the studio offerings and contact them to see what they recommend. Sometimes they have beginner series which they require people to take so many classes to start to learn the basics. You also want to be in a class where the teacher will help beginners, some classes have a level designation.
Also consider doing a private lesson or two. There are tons of yoga teachers due to the money maker teacher training has become. I would recommend someone older with more experience.
But a gentle yoga class may be good to start, or vinyasa flow that includes beginner level. A good studio/instructor will ask about your experience and give you good info. Sit behind others in class so you can have an idea of what to do. Hatha yoga is a very basic and gentler form.
There are tips like keep your foot flexed to protect knees, and using pranyama (ocean sounding breath) to help build heat and flow. Using blocks is also helpful when you are starting to help open up hips more. If you don't have blocks, a rolled up towel/blanket works too.
And don't be intimidated, everyone was a beginner once and most yogis are very welcoming and helpful. I was nervous to do my first class, but I had an amazing teacher who ended up teaching me more about life and myself than yoga, it was the best experience. And still practicing 11 years later.
You won't like every studio, style or teacher, but you try it and figure it out and find what works. I'm not a fan of hot yoga, but it is all the rage. I also do not like bikram (I don't think they call it that anymore) and am just ok with Baptiste power yoga. I love Ashtanga which is what I learned on, but is not too common.

Thank you scrapcat for all that info! And thanks for including the names of the different practices. That is one area I get so confused about. And thanks to everyone for all the great info!

Yoga with Adriene is a really great place to start. When I am doing yoga at home, I have my lap top on a short stool and can tilt the screen up if needed. As others have said, you will do that less as you get familiar with positions and transitions.
IME, most yoga studios will offer a free or reduced cost trial so you can get a feel for the classes, instructors, etc., and see if it is a fit for you. Look at their schedule and your schedule to make sure they are offering what you want at the right time. I want to start my day with yoga but not at the crack of dawn, so 9:30 classes are my favorite and I don't care what it is called.
IME, jumping into a class and following along as best you can is the best way to figure it out. Even different teachers leading a Gentle Yoga class at the same studio will have different approaches to what positions they include. I like the variety. A teacher might gently correct a position but isn't really giving individualized instructions during class, although they generally offer options based on level, limitations, etc.
I started going to my current studio after finding out a favorite co-owner of a studio that didn't survive the Covid shutdown was teaching there.

I absolutely love yoga and have been practicing for about 10 years. I practice Yin yoga every day. It is my favorite kind of yoga. I feel so much more calm and peaceful when I do yoga. I practice both at home and go to several classes a week at local yoga studio. I definitely recommend starting yoga. You’ll be so happy you did.

I love Adrienne (and Benji). This is the exact one I started doing yoga with in Feb. I’m older so. I am still feeling like I get a workout. Have you thought about casting it to your tv or watching it on your tv? I have done both with YouTube videos.

I do peloton yoga but I started yoga in studio multiple times a week for over a year first before moving to on my own.
