Always a fun thread: colonoscopy prep! 😆
I am having my first colonoscopy in two weeks. They just sent me my instructions, and I was a little surprised that the prep they want me to do is the GoLytely. I thought everyone was doing the Gatorade & Miralax prep. Uggghhh, I am so nervous - I don’t do well with liquid medicine anyway, so I’m afraid it’s going to make me vomit. It even says that in my directions that if I should vomit, to just rinse my mouth with water and continue the prep.?!! 😫😬
I guess I’m just asking for all your best tips. My procedure is early a.m., so I drink the first jug at 5pm, then I have to wake up at 1am to finish the other jug.
I’m trying not to be a big baby about it, but I kind of am.

Is it possible to ask for the pills instead? I had a friend that started with the liquids, and couldn’t handle them, so they let her take pills instead. It wouldn’t hurt to ask!

Is it possible to ask for the pills instead? I had a friend that started with the liquids, and couldn’t handle them, so they let her take pills instead. It wouldn’t hurt to ask! I had a hard time with the pills, and I never have trouble with pills (even big ones). But, because there were so many large pills that had to be swallowed in a short amount of time, it was awful for me. I told my daughter that I would probably not choose that one again. I don't know what I will ask for next time but I will consult DD first. Hope you find one you think will work for you.

I honestly didn't think that the Golytely was that bad. Just make sure it's cold. It tasted like watered down lemonade.

That method was the only option that Kaiser uses here. It sucks. I was told to do a liquid diet the day before as well and other than trying to drink the prep it wasn’t that bad. I didn’t drink it as fast as they said. I just couldn’t. I also drank a ton of Gatorade and water throughout the day and still felt dehydrated after.
Good luck.
ETA yes make sure it’s cold and use a straw to try and bypass tasting it. It tasted like salty lemonade. Once things start stay close to the bathroom.

The peas were a huge help when I asked about the prep a couple weeks ago. My prep wasn't nearly as bad as I had thought it would be.
I refrigerated the liquid and added the lemon flavoring they sent with it. I just filled my glass, held my nose and chugged it down at the given times. I made sure to use A&D ointment right from the start. I followed a low fiber diet, starting two days before the prep. I don’t care for plain broth so I took a ramen noodle seasoning packet and poured it into a coffee mug and then used my Keurig to fill up 12 ounces of hot water. I sipped in that for lunch and dinner and didn't feel too hungry.
All in all, it was much easier than I had anticipated. You can do it!

If you had tasted what they used to use, you would love the golightly.
The original @#$$%$### was so bad, I forced myself to drink about 4 oz. and then selected repeated enemas before drinking any more of the vile, vile, vile liquid.
I had the golightly stuff once.
Best thing is when you are 70- if you have had no polyps, then no more colonoscopy is required.

I’m on 3 year cycle because of polyps. They only use GoLytly. Plain. No lemon flavor. Gatorade is not allowed. Only water the day before. Two days before is no solids.
As a diabetic it’s tough. I get so sick and weak. The prep solution makes me nauseous and I vomit. I can’t drink all of it and I always get reprimanded like a child.
I despise getting it done and find it very stressful, but I’ve already had a different type of cancer, so I do it.

Definitely start a low residue diet a couple of days before prep. If there isn't much in your digestive track, there won't be much to come out, just saying. 😊

2 jugs? I thought Golytely was what I had, but mine was one jug and done all at once. (I could be wrong about the name of mine though)
Anyway, make sure it is cold. Use a straw, placed as far back in your mouth as you can. Hold your nose and suck down as much of the 8 oz glass as you can, then take a sip of gingerale and stop holding your nose. Breathe a minute and do it again until that cup is gone. Wait the 10 minutes and repeat.
Once things are clear, you stop drinking. I have never had to go beyond one glass more than half of the jug. Also, according to my Dr, if you vomit, it usually means you are about done.
It really isnt that bad. Id rather do that all at once than have a break and have to start again.

I just had mine two weeks ago. I was given a powder that I mixed with water - one at 4 one at 8 and then one at 5:30 morning of.
I mixed it all, kept it cold and gulped it down. Citrusy but a tad bitter.
Then about an hour after the first batch it kicked in.
I was told no corn/seeds/nuts for the week leading up, and liquid diet day before leading up to the mixture.

I’ve had a couple of colonoscopies using the Golytely method. My tips:refrigerate it so it’s cold. Stand at the sink to drink it (just in case). Pop a Werther’s in your mouth after swallowing.
Good luck!

Good luck! Janet I always stand at the sink, just in case. Never thought about using a hard candy. I'll have to remember that the next time!

I was prescribed Golytely for my colonoscopy and did the Miralax and Gatorade on my own. I was given GoLytely. Once in the hospital before a surgery and swore I would never take it again. I couldn’t gag that stuff down. The prep was just fine. Eat a no residue diet for a couple of days before your cleanse day. Good luck, the prep is the worst part of the whole thing.

I used ClenPiq the last time and it wasn't bad at all. I would totally choose that over GoLytely.

I'm pretty sensitive, but I can actually tolerate it. I buy lemons and lemon drops. I suck on the lemon and chug, and then eat lemon drops. It makes the liquid more tolerable, almost sweet. I've tried other preps and I'm not sure they were as well for me. Looking forward to November and the liquid diet for conference week. Regretting the week I chose, but I didn't want to plan for a sub.

I had the golytely too. Mine was already flavored. I had tons of lemon drops and lolliipoos, but I didn’t find it horrible at all. The hardest part for me was that it was a lot of liquid, and I was instructed to keep drinking clear liquids. I didn’t really get much chance to sleep, and I was miserable in the morning when I had to go to the bathroom but couldn’t because they made me take a pregnancy test (I was 51 at the time and still had an IUD in place …). I was crying it hurt so badly. My husband drive me to the office two hours early so I could let them have their sample. After the liquid diet and sitting on the toilet all night, there was no way I was going to jeopardize the test.

There is an anti nausea medication they can prescribe to help with vomiting. I used it the last time. My favorite prep solution is suprep if your insurance would allow it. I've done many colonoscopies.
Definitely chill it. Use a crystal packet if needed. Drink it with a straw to help bypass the taste buds and suck on a lemon in between. And make sure you are hydrated. Drink the required liquids.
And remember to say to yourself this is way better than chemo. That really is what keeps me going back.

I did not think the GoLytely was that bad. It is a lot of volume to drink, but I sucked on a pineapple LifeSaver in between and 'rinsed' my mouth with swishes of ginger ale so that helped.
The second colonoscopy I had the Miralax/Gatorade and it was fine too. Kind of freaky to pour an entire bottle of Miralax in though! Plus I had to take 4 Dulcolax pills. I felt like the GoLytely cleaned me out better though.

Best thing is when you are 70- if you have had no polyps, then no more colonoscopy is required. I know this is true, but I don't understand it. My mom was 75 when she died of colon cancer. She had a colonoscopy 2 years earlier. They didn't find anything and gave her a clean bill of health. The cancer was extremely aggressive. So I don't understand why they don't require them. If they had caught the cancer earlier I probably would still have a mom.
