I am aghast at some of you that have never used or just don't use cruise control. That thing is my life! I use it everytime I get on the interstate. Me too. And a little bit annoyed. There is nothing worse than having to play leap frog on the highway because people can't maintain a consistent speed. I'm not a road rage person and most things roll right off my back, but this makes me nuts. It's like, just pick a speed already, set the cruise and it's one less thing you have to worry about. I couldn't use it in the city where I live because the traffic is too unpredictable, high speeds and many turns.

Nope. Even on long drives. I prefer to be in control, not a vehicle setting.

I use it on the highway as I have a heavy foot. I would never use it in town.

I use it all the time - in town (as long as there aren't lots of stop signs/lights) and on the highway. I feel like it helps me focus more on my environment, other cars/drivers, etc because I don't have to give my attention to whether I'm going too fast or too slow.

Question for those that use it in the city - is the speed limit usually the same all over your city?
There is one street around here where it starts at 35, changes to 30 for a couple of blocks, then becomes 35 again for a short distance until it becomes 45 for quite a distance. And this is not unusual. Many streets here have changing speed limits.
One place where cops hang out is at the end of a downhill, where the speed limit is 55. As soon as you past the signal, it changes to 45. The cops get so many people at this corner.

I live in Seattle proper, a highly populated area. I never use it on surface streets in town (or other town). EVER.
I never use it on the highways around town (I5, 405, I90, 520, 167, etc). They're just too busy to be able to set-it-and-forget-it.
I do not use it on I5 at all unless I am far south of Portland, OR. Never on I5 in Western WA state unless it's late at night and there's barely anyone on the road. Really, the only time I use it is when I'm out I the middle of the boonies east of the mountains.

I use the cruise control all the time on highways and interstates, but never would I even try to use it in town.

I have never used it although I probably should have. I received a speeding ticket last year going 85 in a 65 MPH zone! Only ticket I have ever gotten.

I use it on highways or similar roads where I'll be going a consistent speed without very much starting/stopping.

That same speed applies to all the streets that I frequent when I cross over to drive in Dallas city limits.

I almost never use it, but I would never use it in the city. Seems like it would put unnecessary wear and tear on it.

Nope. Even on long drives. I prefer to be in control, not a vehicle setting. ^^^ that. I also find that I get 'road hypnosis' if I'm not in control of the vehicle... it's too easy for me to get drowsy and not pay attention if I use the cruise control. also, my new car has adaptive cruise control (that I don't think I can turn off) and I hate that feature. eta: to the OP's question, if I DID use it, I would never use it in the city or in any heavy-ish traffic... only on the highway.

Never in town, usually just on the highway, if at all. DH uses it way more than I do - but still on a highway/long straightaway, never in the city.

Usually not on city streets, just on the highway. On city streets I would be turning it on and off all the time so what's the point. Highway always if it is possible. Rush hour, not so much.
Knock on wood.. I speed. I admit it. I haven't had a ticket in at least 20 years. KNOCK ON WOOD.
I'm not an idiot that goes over 100.. but our highway is 75.. I know I have hit it to 85. But that isn't the normal.. I am usually sitting around 80.
My cop friend told me once.. five is fine, 10 your mine.
Edited: I'm not understanding the control issue.. my foot is right there by the break.. it wouldn't take me anymore time to hit the break because my foot would be over on the accelerator and then move over to the break. If on cruise control, my foot is actually (usually) right by the break. Unless I'm trying to stretch.

I only use cruise control on highways. I don’t use it around town. I actually only use it if the speed limit is 65 or over.

Speaking just for myself, when I need to slow down, I can either just take my foot off the gas pedal or step on the break, depending on the situation. But I also think there is small gap in timing when you are not actively pressing on the gas pedal and then suddenly need to step on the break. To me at least, moving your foot off the gas onto the break is different than just having your foot hover around the break pedal.

I typically use it on long drives. However I really need to use it all the time with my new car. I went from a 4 cylinder to a 6 cylinder and boy i can’t seem to find the sweet spot yet. Hoping to adjust before I get pulled over.

I use it all the time. It's so easy for me to go too fast in my Telluride. I love it for school zones.
ETA: I don’t use it in town with busy roads.

I use it on highways when I can but would not use it in town.
That being said, it drives me crazy if I’m driving on a highway or interstate and someone is clearly not using cruise control because their speed is all over the place. In town doesn’t really seem safe or effective to use.

Do you use cruise control on city streets? Never. I feel like you need a higher level of observation driving within cities. Cruise control takes some of that away. Plus the fact you are breaking and just needing to slow due to traffic and stop signs, etc. Cruise control would be more of a pain to use. I pay attention to my speed and my surroundings. I have a digital gauge that tells me my exact speed an a easy glance. I'm with your husband on this one. See I feel differently... I feel like because I am using cc in the city that I am able to pay more attention to my surroundings because I am not worried about speeding.... I drive in the same town I have lived in my whole life... I know what the speed is and where it goes down or up from 1 speed to the next... I can watch out for kids or animals or something that isnt normal because my speed is set.. I can step on the brake to slow down as needed.... we do have lights and pot holes... but once past those I pick back up to speed and press resume... I do mainly drive on the highway

What? If he doesn't like it maybe then he should be driving. There you go! LOL Do you do most of the driving? My DH almost always climbs in the passenger seat. If we are driving a long ways, we take turns, but I call him my Passenger Princess. We are usually going somewhere he needs to be - and his phone is always going off with calls and texts, so I am glad I am driving. He is either on the phone or asleep. I generally always drive us to sale barns on buying trips. I prefer him driving after dark, if we are going through any major metro areas (if Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Omaha, etc. count as that!) I don't do bright lights at night. Most of my "city" driving around here consists of small towns. Heck, we have one stop light in our whole county - and it isn't even close to me!

I need to be in control of the speed so that I am ;paying attention in order to stay alert, and using cruise control means I don't *have* to be as mentally engaged.

I haven't used cruise control in about 30 years and forgot it was even a feature in the car.
When I did use way back in the 90s - I also felt like I didn't have full control of the vehicle and never cared enough to work through that.

For those that use cruise control in the city, did you ever drive a manual transmission car? I drove one for many years, you can’t be using cruise control while shifting all the time. You are always aware of your speed, or at least how fast your transmission is reving. That still carries over to now, when I drive an automatic. I still listen to the engine, and always glance at the speedometer.

I didn't even know it was available in a standard shift. That would be counter productive it seems.
