In the past, we used to have lots of little polling places in local neighborhoods. Usually, there was one in someone's garage up the street from me. They were only open on election day. Now, we have "Voting Centers", and they open up 10 days before election day. They are usually in a school, library, or community center. It has only been a couple of years since our county switched to voting centers. There is also the big county registrar building where you can vote even earlier.
ETA - This is more of a generic *you* question. What kind of polling/voting places does your area have.

early voting is at the main Election board office or the satellite one.
on election day - we vote at precinct based polling places - often more than one precinct votes at the same one. Here they are primarily located at (county owned/run) community centres - ours is about 8 miles from us.

Last time I went to vote it was at a temporary site because of construction at our community center. It has returned to the community center but I vote with a mailing ballot now.
Most of our polling sites are schools. I was a poll clerk one time at the Armory and assorted schools until I got my permanent spot at the community center in the early 1980s until I gave it up in the early 2000s. We had two districts, each with their own machine.

We can mail in our ballots, drop off our ballots at the town clerk/lock box prior to Election Day, or we can go to the designated polling place for our district on Election Day.

I always vote at the County Government Center; but they have places set up at the libraries, a few colleges and public schools for early voting. On Election Day, the sites are more widespread and include a few senior citizen centers, fire stations, and even MORE public schools.

For us, early voting is at the courthouse but on Election Day it’s at the local precinct which is in the city offices building in my city. I prefer voting at the courthouse because it’s bigger. The city offices building is small and cramped and the lines end up going out the door which isn’t awesome in November if it’s cold, raining or snowing.

Elementary school.
History info. This school is located in Niota TN, which is where Harry T Burn lived, he's the one who cast the deciding vote for women being able to vote(because his momma told him to!). So I always find it kind of cool voting there on election day.
But I'm also considering early voting, which would be at the courthouse.

We have polling places, although never in someone's garage- usually a school or other public building. The location for early voting is somehwere else (It might be at the clerk's office or the senior center in my community- early voting is new in my state and we dont do it, so i dont know)

Our early voting sites tend to be public libraries. Election day voting takes places at elementary schools for the most part. They've finally decided that having a bunch of randos in and out of the school all day while the students are there is a bad idea, so now it's a school holiday. FYI this is Texas.
ETA: I think some churches may be used as polling places as well.

Here they've always been public locations--township buildings, city hall, fire stations, etc. In the past they used schools, but they no longer do that. They do, however, use the admin. buildings that the school district owns.

Early voting has 3 locations. One in town. The other 2 are on opposite ends of the county. They are all very accessible. You can vote at any of the locations regardless of where you live.
On election day you must vote at your precinct which for us is at a church. Some locations are fire departments and community centers. They used to use the schools and school was closed on election day.

Washington State: vote by mail (has to be in the mail by election day don't even need a stamp), or drop box. I have never voted any other way.

Only public building here - schools, community centers, etc. I usually go to the community center close to my house.

Advance polling for the area is in the town 10 minutes from me, it's open for 10 days. The advance polling covers a huge area (huge geographically, not population wise). It and election day voting in my town are in the community hall ~ Alberta

Its almost all neighborhood churches in my area. The precincts are pretty small so no one has very far to go.

Early voting is at the courthouse. On Election Day, we have voting precincts. The church I work at and attend is a precinct for the area residents. My precinct is about 3/4 from my house. Also a church. For the most part, most precincts around here are at a church in the neighborhood it is set in. As long as I can remember, that is how it has been set up.

For early voting in a presidential election, we have a couple of early voting centers that are open for 2 weeks. Those who got a n Election Day still vote at their local polling place, which for me is the elementary school one mile from my go de.
I remember my parents voting in a neighbor’s garage.
For other elections, I think there is only one early voting location, but I’m pretty sure all the local polling places are open on Election Day.

I remember those local polling places. When I was growing up a couple down the block used to have voting in their garage/community room. They were very much community people.
I vote at temporary polling places set up around the community. In 2020 it was in a big tent in the Home Depot parking lot. In 2022 it was at the YMCA. I have voted at a few schools sometimes.

Prior to our move we had polling places since our move they are larger. I waited about an hour to vote in 2016 at a school Vs the garage in the past. That was a first for me usually it’s less than 15 mins. I’m not sure when early voting starts here. I know there will be some open early but not really close to use. I really like mail in and we have manned drop off boxes. They will make sure you have signed and written in your address. If dropping off more than one that that part is also signed and filled out.

Either mail in ballot or drop it in a designated drop box.
In NC my polling place was in a church.
