Hoping all affected are safe. Sending good thoughts to all that need them
I am impatiently waiting /hoping for confirmation from a close friend in Asheville. Although I suspect it will be awhile until I hear from him…keeping my fingers crossed for the best.

Major flooding from (the remnants of) Hurricane Helene. Unprecedented flooding from the sounds of it. Almost no cell service or internet service to much of Asheville.

Hoping all affected are safe. Sending good thoughts to all that need them I am impatiently waiting /hoping for confirmation from a close friend in Asheville. Although I suspect it will be awhile until I hear from him…keeping my fingers crossed for the best. I texted a friend who lives south of Asheville this afternoon. It took her a couple of hours to receive it. She replied and then called amazed that her text had come through. We talked briefly. There was one corner of her yard she could stand in to get one bar. No power, no water, no internet, trees down in the roads, it's awful. The other challenge is that you have to have cash to pay for things, particularly gas. We had that experience here while our internet was down. Fortunately it came back up this evening. Hope you hear from your friend soon.

Can't go through on that link unless you're a subscriber. Oh, too bad. It somehow came across my feed this afternoon and seemed like solid local reporting. What a horrifying scenario. It seems there's no part of the planet safe from the harm we've done to planet Earth, with each tragedy seemingly more tragic than the last.

North Carolina residents trying to connect with family members may call NC 211 (or 1-888-892-1162 if calling from out of state) to report missing loved ones. People in the affected areas can alert others that they are safe by checking in on Facebook crisis response or reporting themselves safe through Red Cross Reunification by calling 1-800-ED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Thankfully I just heard from my friend and he is okay but things are bad there (Asheville) in a lot of places. He was able to charge his phone on his Prius. I hope everyone who is also waiting for information on people in affected areas hear from them soon.

Thanks friends. I don't know anyone in the area but my heart breaks for all those affected. Waiting to try to hear from loved ones, or trying to reach loved ones with the news that you're safe, must be agony.

A friend of mine's kid is at UNC Asheville and they just managed to get them out and home a few hours ago. I've been watching the coverage (when I lived in SC we went to Asheville a lot) and it's just awful.
