Here is my second Texture Tuesday. This week I want you to think of something soft, like velvet ribbon or flocked pp. No need to create your own flocked surface (and I know some of you cringe when you think of loose glitter or flocking fuzz taking over your craft room). Use a piece of ribbon or fabric if you have no crafting supplies that will work. You don't need much, just a touchable tidbit. Here is my card created with a piece of what HOTP calls "suede" pp. (actually a titch of real leather suede would work for this challenge, too). CARDtober #8 by Gramma Dee, on Flickr Have fun!

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried die cutting that wide velvety ribbon like is often used for wreath bows?

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried die cutting that wide velvety ribbon like is often used for wreath bows? I haven’t, but thinking if I were going to do that, I would glue the ribbon to cs first. Great idea. Love to see what you decide to do.

grammadee , your card is so bright and pretty, and I love the contrast of the deeper red. I was racking my brain as to what I could do. I don’t have any velveteen ribbon, but I remembered a paper in my stash from long, long ago that has a velveteen texture. I also had one that was fuzzier. The latter one was tan, so I thought I’d see if I could stamp some baby bears on it, since it was the perfect texture. Nope. The Momento ink wouldn’t dry. I was afraid my heat gun would damage the fuzzy texture. So I tried the white velveteen. It stamped great (same Momento ink), dried quick, but it was white, and I didn’t want polar bears. I wanted brown bears. Copics colored darker and stronger on it. Weird, but at least I had tested my Copics on a scrap area. I finally tried chalk, and that worked for coloring the bears. If anyone else wants to use the fuzzy textured papers from years ago, definitely test scraps if you decide to stamp on it or color it. Here’s my card: The inside will say, “Take it easy.”

I LOVE your card, scrapnnana! Those bears are so snuggly soft and sweet! Had to giggle, though, after I read the saga of its production and then the greeting! I know that the MME "Lush" I found for yesterday's cards had a flocked sheet, but couldn't find it now. Maybe I used it all up?

scrapnnana thank you for sharing all your experiments! I too have some fuzzy paper and a few sheets of velveteen paper to try for this challenge. Appointments, groceries and fatigue caught up with me today so no craft time! grammadee So pretty! The contrast words so well along with the metallic gold.

Fun challenge grammadee! I’ll have to search my stash tomorrow afternoon. I had one soft/velvety Shimelle paper but I used it all up (with difficulty) and threw away the scraps. Not sure if I have any ribbon… but I’ll try to find something!

scrapnnana I know your bears were tricky but they turned out sooooo cute. I'm glad you kept at it and I enjoyed hearing about the process. grammadee Thank you for the velvet challenge. My Fun Flock had not been out of the box for YEARS. I enjoyed getting it back out, which is kind of the point of challenges, eh, to get you out of a rut. I made a flock of butterflies that are fun flocked.

I had hoped to find green ribbon to make velvety leaves, but I found red, so I made bows: I know I was losing the light, sorry.

So I was a little bit stuck. I knew I wanted to make an elegant birthday card and it just took awhile to come together. Purple suede paper (unknown), Silver metallic DeNami Designs, Spellbinder Belle Epoque, Technique Tuesday Blooming Branches Versa Clair Fine Nocturne, Iridescent EP, Derwent Inktense Watercolor Ink Pencils, Simple Strips Birthday Taylored Expressions (dies too), Lawn Fawn Banners for the largest die. This card is for a lovely lady at church, her name is Violet and that is her favorite color. Last spring at coffee hour we were sitting with those who have the same birthday month. Turns out Violet will turn 90 on November 16th the day after my 65th birthday on November 15th. I knew I wanted to make a special card for her.

A new Tuesday will be upon us before we know it, and since we have plans to go out for dinner this evening, I will drop this week's challenge in now. This week's texture will be provided by some simple dry embossing/debossing. The gate/fence in the card below gets its texture two ways in a process I picked up from one of SCT's Crop & Create classes. CARDtober # 15 by Gramma Dee, on Flickr Technique: I folded the front panel of the card base back, then used my Score Pal and a stylus to deboss lines down it at regular intervals. (The class also included an option of doing this from the other side, having the embossed lines as the high points, but I prefer the look of it this way). Then I took a grey smoke ink pad, and dragged it lightly down the "boards" to give them a kind of weathered fence kinda look. If you think about wood grain while you apply the ink, you will automatically wave the pad a bit as you move down the panel. So that is my texture challenge for Tuesday the 15th. I hope you give this a try. If you don't want to make a rustic gate or door, you can also deboss other patterns into your cs, maybe place a smaller piece of cs over a panel and then score just around the edge of it for a frame... I hope you give this a try and I hope you have fun!

I have a bin in my craft room of "brand new, let me use it before we inventory and put away" so that I actually use something I bought. This is Altenew's Exotic Plumeria. kitbop and I both agree that coloring with stencils is a real game changer for many stamps! This is a perfect example!
I used Memento inks in Dandelion, Rose Bud, Cocoa Brown, Cottage Ivy, and Pine Forrest. The craft cardstock was scored on a diagonal to create desired textural interest! Fun challenge grammadee !

Here's my belated velvety soft card. Red velvet ribbon was a great chance to try and make a Santa suit card without using any specialty dies (like the TE ones I've refused to buy and swore for years I would just DIY). I used leftover cs from a notebook cover for the belt and a scrap of matte gold for the buckle, slits cut with a craft knife. I might make a bunch of these with this giant spool of vintage ribbon. Velvet challenge by jo.blackford, on Flickr I'll be back with a scored card soon Love the peeking bear example grammadee. So many cool textures

angel97701 Beautiful! So precisely colored, just the right touch with the stencils. joblackford sweet! I wish I could touch it. The recipient will love it and not be able to resist its touchability. grammadee thank you for the emboss/deboss challenge. I LOVE how your cute touchable bear is peeking behind your woodgrain gate. My ink dragging did not leave lovely woodgrain-like brushy marks like yours, BUT while I was creating the lines for the planks my score tool slipped and I thought it looked like wood grain so I just added more of those curvy score marks. This is a two-fer, for the inked folder as well. I wanted an ordinary looking snowman but then the gate opens to reveal a surprise. Turns out Snowie is a Penn State fan!

ingenius use of velvet ribbon, joblackford. I think I may have to dig out a roll... What an adorable card, jjpeapea! Love the Snow Fan. And your stylus woodgrain marks make for lovely texture.

grammadee, yours is such a cute card! I love the bear peeking out from behind the wood fence. angel97701, your scoring is beautiful and creates a great background for your lovely flowers. joblackford, your Santa suit card is really cute. Thanks for the info on the ribbon. jjpeapea, I love the gate surprise for your snow/snowman card. I scored the door planks of mine, but the scoring doesn’t really show. So I used an embossing folder on the background, and instead of the front, I used the debossed side. Unfortunately, it just looks like regular embossing in the photo, but it is actually debossed (and scored). Sometimes pictures really don’t do a card justice.

Another texture challenge for ya! Many card makers use embossing folders to amp up the impact of their cards. But for this challenge, I want you to go one step further, and find a way to emphasize that embossing. Start with a piece of embossed cs, whether you embossed it yourself, or if you purchased it that way. *if you are working with white or light cs, lightly brush an ink pad in a darker or contrasting colour over the embossed area to highlight the pattern. *if the cs is coloured with a white or kraft core, use sandpaper or a file to rough up the high points so the core shows through. *if the cs is a dark colour with no contrasting core, brush a white or silver ink pad lightly over the embossed surface to highlight the pattern. For my sample, I used a piece of embossed white core cs I have had for years. I sanded the surface to highlight the pattern. CARDtober #22 by Gramma Dee, on Flickr I hope you try one of these techniques--or all three! And that you have fun doing it. They work, too, with cs that has a textured pattern on it (like a linen weave) even if they are not actually embossed. Have fun!
