I am totally appalled by this. I have some cousins who live in Holmes County, FL & their children go to this high school. The sheriff of the town has donated an AR15 for a raffle!! Why in the world would a LEO donate this & why would a high school hold a raffle for it? Especially after the recent shooting in GA What is wrong with this world?

Considering the "drama" when our PTA/school tried to have a cake walk (it's a game of chance and considered gambling) how is this even possible?

As a retired teacher who has participated in more active shooter drills than I ever wanted to, I think it is awful.

Speechless. I feel the need for the school’s email address to ask how they can justify this.

The same people who think this is fine lose their minds if their kid comes home with a rainbow sticker on his paper. They're sick.

The only way the deaths will stop is when something like this becomes socially unacceptable.

Very inappropriate. The donation should have been refused, by School administration.
Please correct me if I am wrong. Aren't background checks supposed to be conducted, on those who wish to obtain a weapon of this caliber?
Want happens if it ends up in the wrong hands? What happens if the winner ticket holder doesn't want it?
Quite honestly, if the Sheriff in question doesn't have enough common sense to know that this type of donation isn't appropriate......then perhaps they shouldn't be Sheriff or a sworn Officer of the Law in any capacity or level.

Here ya go! hchs.hdsb.org/Please correct me if I am wrong. Aren't background checks supposed to be conducted, on those who wish to obtain a weapon of this caliber? Down at the bottom on small letters, it does say subject to background check. Does it make it right? Hell to the no! This reminds me of something said last night in the debate. A friend of mine posted something on FB today about Walz misspeaking about being friends with a school shooter. Oh the uproar from her fellow friends. Yet, these are the folks voting for the "don't take my guns" party. Sorry to interject politics, I just shook my head at that posting.

The flier says that whoever wins has to go thru Federal Background Screenings. So it's legal.

My understanding is that, at least in my state, no background check is required for private sales. So there's nothing forcing them to do a background check when this happens in Texas (and it does). Same with gun shows and people selling weapons by word of mouth.

I hate the idea of gun raffles. I don’t recall seeing/hearing anything about them growing up in Iowa but there are a lot of them here in Minnesota. Usually out on my the VFW or American legion I think.

What is wrong with this world? As gar said, your question should be "What is wrong with this country?" This would quite simply never happen in pretty much any other country in the world. I am as appalled as you are. I just don't get it. It is outrageous.

In years past I heard of gun raffles done through the VFW etc. Hunting rifles.
But an AR15 raffle? To benefit a school? Background check or not, this is beyond inappropriate. What the hell is wrong with people?

Do you have the whole name of the school and city? Or the email for the school board and/or principal? I feel the need to send an email or two.

I think this was clearly done as a political statement. Fundraising was not the Sherriff's objective. I wish he would be voted out of office but if this donation is accepted in his county, then his job is sadly safe.

I'm sure each state is different, but in my state, you have to have a license to run a raffle. I would be interested in seeing what the raffle laws state what can and can't be reaffled.
I can not for the life of me understand how anyone in their right mind thinks this is appropriate. Shameful.

If it’s like a lot of fundraisers in my area, it’s not actually run by the school. It’s done by the PTO committee or whatever organization does project graduation. So slightly outside of the school. Here, our schools require those organization have them bet everything but I’m sure that’s not everywhere.

The fixation and love affair with guns in the USA is appalling. A few years ago somewhere in Texas and in Louisiana had raffles for guns. Sane people were complaining and saying, "WTH" --so I have not read of them lately. I just cannot imagine the thought process of the LO who donated and supports this idea of "let's get more guns on the street." I live in a very red state. The first week of hunting season is a school holiday, because a large portion of the student body is out hunting (male and female). The volunteer Fire Depts hold gun raffles. There is one that is done yearly that is rather large. Personally, I don’t mind these because 1. the sizable hunting population, 2. guns are not seen as status symbols, but as tools, 3. the last means, there aren’t idiots walking around with guns on their backs trying to get a rise out of people, 4. the area is about 40 years behind the rest of the country. Seriously, a common discussion of play dates is if there are guns and whether they are locked up. The norm seems to be acquiring a gun safe while pregnant or before the first baby starts walking. A gun raffle held by a high school…no! Whoever thought this up and whoever approved it are idiots.
