The only way the deaths will stop is when something like this becomes socially unacceptable. We did it pretty much with cigerettes.

WTAF. How tone deaf and completely inappropriate.

The fixation and love affair with guns in the USA is appalling. A few years ago somewhere in Texas and in Louisiana had raffles for guns. Sane people were complaining and saying, "WTH" --so I have not read of them lately. I just cannot imagine the thought process of the LO who donated and supports this idea of "let's get more guns on the street." I live in a very red state. The first week of hunting season is a school holiday, because a large portion of the student body is out hunting (male and female). The volunteer Fire Depts hold gun raffles. There is one that is done yearly that is rather large. Personally, I don’t mind these because 1. the sizable hunting population, 2. guns are not seen as status symbols, but as tools, 3. the last means, there aren’t idiots walking around with guns on their backs trying to get a rise out of people, 4. the area is about 40 years behind the rest of the country. Seriously, a common discussion of play dates is if there are guns and whether they are locked up. The norm seems to be acquiring a gun safe while pregnant or before the first baby starts walking. A gun raffle held by a high school…no! Whoever thought this up and whoever approved it are idiots. A hunting rifle is a tool. An AK-47 is a military style weapon meant for killing people, not deer. Discussing whether guns are locked away before play dates is a responsible thing to do. So I think there is a significant difference between what is common in your community and the auction of an AK-47 to raise funds for a school or an auction for any reason really.

Here ya go! hchs.hdsb.org/ Down at the bottom on small letters, it does say subject to background check. Does it make it right? Hell to the no! This reminds me of something said last night in the debate. A friend of mine posted something on FB today about Walz misspeaking about being friends with a school shooter. Oh the uproar from her fellow friends. Yet, these are the folks voting for the "don't take my guns" party. Sorry to interject politics, I just shook my head at that posting. Were you able to find this posted on the school's website? I looked and did a search for 'raffle' but couldn't find anything. I have a friend in Florida and I wanted to send it to her. I didn't look. I just grabbed the school district's website for contact info.

Do you have the whole name of the school and city? Or the email for the school board and/or principal? I feel the need to send an email or two. Holmes County High School Bonifay, FL I don’t know the email

I hope this is a pathetic joke!!!! I wish! I called my cousin, whose daughter is a senior there, & verified it. How horrific. I'm sorry your family is anywhere near this craziness!

I wanted to see if I could find a news story for this raffle so I googled "high school gun raffle Florida" and was HORRIFIED by the number of hits that came up! Apparently it's more of a thing than I would have thought! Florida, Alabama, and Texas were some of the states in the hits that came up.
One school cancelled the raffle after the last school shooting, so there's that. But still.
Sometimes this world really surprises me, and this is one of those times.

If their school was the one that had been shot up, would they still be doing this? I just don't understand this kind of mentality!

Google "High School Gun Raffle Holmes County, FL." In a few months, Google "High School Shooting Holmes County, FL."
This blows my mind. Our non-profit goes round and round avoiding using the word raffle, advertising that could imply gambling, etc. The legal definition of gambling is the presence of "prize, chance, consideration," in other words you must pay, there is no skill involved, and winning is random. This is straight-up gambling so it is illegal and there MUST be some law that says we can't gamble for guns, right?

Do you live in Florida?

I think this was clearly done as a political statement. Fundraising was not the Sherriff's objective. I wish he would be voted out of office but if this donation is accepted in his county, then his job is sadly safe. That's my read too. And as a political statement, it's gross.

I have no idea what is happening when I try to post but I was replying to Lisae. The auction is for an AR 15. Not an AK 47.

I emailed them and got this response:
We appreciate you submitting a web contact form expressing your concern. The group that is sponsoring the raffle is NOT affiliated with Holmes County High School. They are a parent organization that is totally separate from our school. We understand the concern that our community might possibly have with this fundraiser. If you have more questions or concerns, please contact our principal, Laurence Pender, at 850-547-9000 or Holmes District Superintendent Buddy Brown at 850-547-9341.

First. disneypal I read your subject HS raffle for ARTS .. thought wow, sorry school has lost funding... But alas far far worse!!! Outrages... Should the gun be used in any crime then charge to Parent group for enabling ... It's working it's way into the courts. Hopefully the Sheriff will not have to investigate a child's death, or maybe his own!!

I don’t care what they say though, I replied back: Thank you for your response. But with the school's name on the raffle, it looks like you are endorsing this.

. That’s CYA horse$#*t. Where does the money go? Our band boosters were “totally separate” but the money all went to the band.
