Welcome to CARDtober, and to Color Combos! I will be the host for all of the Thursday challenges. Keeping this simple so hopefully everyone will be able to join on - I'll give you a few colors to start with and what you do with them is up to you - use patterned papers, cardstock, inks, whatever you want to play with, and no worries if some other colors creep in too. Samples will appear down thread, but all of the prompts will appear in this post. grammadee has a guide to all the challenges and points in this thread but you don't need to be on a team to play along. 10/3 - play with blues and oranges, maybe some yellows or browns too 10/10 - make it rainbow colored 10/17 - black and white + one color jump to sample10/24 - use a triadic color scheme jump to samples10/31 - use your favorite color (a little or a lot) on a card

10/3 - play with blues and oranges, maybe some yellows or browns too. I used a couple of colorful patterned papers with some really bright blue accents and lots of warm orangey tones. CARDtober 10/3 by jo.blackford, on Flickr This is made with Paper Rose Studio's Animal Kingdom 12x12 paper pack

Thank for the color combo challenge, joblackford! I needed a cheerful, simple, jejune card. I may have done party hats before? but this is the card in my mind for the birthday boy. Photographed in the evening light. Your lion image is so majestic and powerful. grammadee I love the cripsy fall day blue sky and leaves combination. I can almost smell the air! Linda I see you needed a cheerful birthday card as well, although yours is loads more sophisticated. Lovely!

joblackford, your stained glass image and card are absolutely stunning! grammadee, your card is lovely, and those detailed leaves really draw the eyes right to them. Linda, that is a delightful birthday card. jjpeapea, your card is fun and cheerful, and I like the repetition of the birthday sentiments. Even though orange and blue are complimentary colors, I doubt that I would have thought to use this combination if you hadn’t made it a challenge. I think if I do blue and orange together again, I will use brighter versions of the colors, but I am trying to use scraps for all of my cards, if possible, so I was working with what I had in my scrap bins. This is what I came up with:

I made some more blue and orange cards (with the new Sheetload and one piece of washi tape!). The tops ones are all cut from one blue-green-orange patterned paper. The background koala one was inspired by the red dirt of Australia. Oct share by jo.blackford, on Flickr

Challenge for October 10 - make it rainbow. It doesn’t have to be rainbow shaped, just in some way rainbow colored. It also doesn’t have to be a traditional tones or every color in ROYGBIV. In my examples I’ve used the Waffle Flower packaging rainbow + iridescent silvery cs, a simplified boho/muted rainbow, and a more traditional rainbow colored paper as a background behind a multi-colored image. Love all your different examples, joblackford! Wow. Way to keep us on our toes. I had just dipped my toe into holiday card mood, but this will get me back with my "normal" supplies. Hmmm... I am really liking that pp behind your owl panel. Thinking I might want to play with some inks. On the other hand, I may just search through my patterned papers for something similar without all the mess...

Here ya go, joblackford! It was actually fun to do the ink blending. Don't know why I didn't do more panels while I was at it. Ct #10 by Gramma Dee, on Flickr Not sure if you can see the greeting. I printed "HELLO" onto ribbon with my Brother ribbon printer, and popped it onto a scrap.

Fabulous card grammadee and yes, I can see the "hello" on the ribbon - very clever! Ink blending a rainbow is always fun and it's an easy way to get the specific color palette you want, especially if you'e matching some stamping.

grammadee very pretty! I loved your ink blend background. I came close to copying you! (It turns out I did butterflies as well.) Perhaps on a future project. joblackford Thank you for the rainbow challenge. Thank you for providing multiple inspirations to show the possibilities. I looked through papers for something colorful and these butterflies captured my attention. Then I looked through my stickers and I ended up with an Easter card. Now if I can only keep track of it for months and months.

So I had some time to play yesterday A little story here. I finally broke down and treated myself to a hotfoil system last spring. The Gemini Hotpress. I was SO FRUSTRATED with the system b/c it took forever to heat up, didn't foil effectively and overall was a real struggle to use. Several weeks later I decided to buy a replacement plate to have on hand and also to see if the first one might be defective. Well yesterday I got that bad boy out and GUESS WHAT! It works so much better! I have an email into Crafter's companion to see if they will replace the defective one. So here is my card. I knew I had rainbow foil and wanted to give it a try. The photo was taken to show off the foiling!
The foiling plates and dies are by Spellbinders Balloon Bouquet as is the foil. I die cut several layers of the balloons and shaker hole to make a sturdy embellishment. Used a tried and true method to get my colorful background. Kaliedacolor Spectrum brayered directly on a Cuttlebug birthday embossing folder then pressure embossed glossy cardstock. To offset the color I backed the glossy cardstock on black. I also die cut the shaker window through the 2 layers before adhering it to the card base. The is a small amount of thin foam adhesive behind the open area. Acetate is used to create the shaker window. Sequins from my stash fill the shaker. Since the sentiment is all over the background I called it done

jjpeapea, I love your butterflies in those pretty colours! Good news about the foiling, angel97701. I maybe should have complained to Spellbinders about my Glimmer System machine (I complained to everyone else!) I only use it when I have someone younger and stronger to remove the heating platform from the machine to move it to the Big Shot. Love your pretty card. Wondering what inks you used on the embossing folder to get that pretty background?

grammadee It is Tsukineko Kaliedacolor spectrum. link I have about a dozen in different hues. It is a dye based ink that works its very best on glossy cardstock.

Thanks for playing along! jjpeapea I love your colorful butterflies. Hopefully you find a good way to keep track of the card for next year! angel97701 that rainbow foil is stunning and the pretty iridescent background too. Glad you got your foiling system working at last. Hope the company makes it right.
