Hello all!
This week I read one book:
Martyr Kaveh Akbar ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fiction/Poetry Well, this was a book that I wish I could read for a book club. When I was done, I wanted to talk about it so badly. I ended up on Reddit to see how others processed it. Sad and humorous, beautifully written, thought provoking and confounding. I was going to give it a 4.5 as I didn’t click with the protagonist completely—although he grew on me, but I have been thinking about this book since I completed it, and it will stick with me for a while, so it was rounded up to a 5 star. If you read it, let me know your thoughts.
What did you read this week?

I just finished “Here One Moment” by Liane Moriarity. I liked it, probably a 4/5.
Just as I finished it I got a notification from my library that my next book was ready -“Somewhere Beyond The Sea” by TJ Klune. It’s a sequel to “The House in the Cerulean Sea”. I’m a huge fan of his ad would recommend his books to someone wanting something unique and fantastical.

I didn't finish anything this week. I have three checked out from the library (two on Kindle and one an actual hardback!) and a handful from Kindle Unlimited. But an audio copy of Ina Garten's memoir became available for me from the library, so I stopped all other reading and I'm listening to that. LOL!

I read The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave. ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 Liam Noone was many things to many people. To the public, he was an exacting, self-made hotel magnate fleeing his past. To his three ex-wives, he was a loving albeit distant family man who kept his finances flush and his families carefully separated. To Nora, he was a father who often loved her from afar-notably,a cliffside cottage perched on the California coast where he fell to his death. The authorities rule the death accidental, but Nora and her estranged brother Sam have other ideas. As Nora and Sam form an uneasy alliance to unravel the mystery, they start putting together the pieces of their father's past and uncover a family secret that changes everything.
This was not that much of a thriller compared to her novel The Last Thing He Told Me.

Listening to it and hearing Lucy's voice has given to many out loud laughs. We had an emergency in the office this morning so I am in catch up mode. In about an hour I will be where I can finally listen to it and be done. I am glad to know I can go on to book 2. I hope it is on Everand. I need to look it up. Most likely before I listen to that one, I will start up Anxious People by Fredrick Backman. It has been on my TBR list for some time. So now is the time.

The characters are human. But Backman's style annoys me. Can't pinpoint why. Now I know he's written a lot, but this is the only book of his I read. But it was a solid 4 star read for me, and a book I still think about, even months later.

4 Stars for All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker. “I just wanted to show you that sometimes things survive despite the harshest of odds.” This was a slow burning, Shawshenk Redemption type story. As a child, Patch stops the kidnapping of classmate Misty, but then is lost himself. While the town is sure he is dead, his best friend Saint refuses to give up. But for every triumph they achieve, there is a setback. The story started out strong, but the author could have cut down at least 200 pages in the middle. The book ramps up at the end, and I wasn't expecting how it turned out.

I've branched out a bit from my obsession with the "...in Death" books. This week I read Origin in Death, and Memory in Death. (J.D. Robb) I'm still really liking them. So funny that when I read the first in the series years ago I didn't care for it at all. Now I'm loving seeing how the characters develop, how they relate to each other, etc. But, my "branching out" also included I Need You to Read This by Jessa Maxwell. It's about a young woman who takes over as a newspaper's advice columnist after that columnist is murdered. It was just "meh" as my kids would say. A pretty quick read. A few tense moments. Quite a few dumb things equivalent to the people who go down in that dark basement after two others have disappeared and they hear a noise. lol This book had several of those.

I'm glad to see your review of Martyr, @greatcarpezio, that's a book that is on my radar.
This week, I’ve read:
Shakespeare the Man Who Pays the Rent by Dame Judi Dench. This was such a fun read! Erudite and intelligent – she goes through the plays character played by character played and discusses the text, the way to approach the characters, as well as telling stories about the productions and cast. Far ranging and a fun read – though be forewarned, she is not opposed to using explicatives. 4.5/5 stars.
Memory Eternal by Sarah Byrne-Martelli. Sarah was the speaker at our Parish's Pre-Lenten Retreat this year. A good discussion of the theology of death and grieving in the Orthodox faith. Read a bit at a time in the morning. 4/5 stars.
Oh William by Elizabeth Strout. While this read quickly, I found the characters to be unlikable and the writing style was repetitive and awkward . 2.5/5 stars.
Olympus, Texas by Stacey Swann. The problem with a Greek Myth retelling is that everyone behaves badly. It was interesting that it only took a week for the whole tragedy to unfold though I felt that it took a long time to do the setup for such a tight timeline. I thought that she did a good job with the retelling aspect and it did make me go back and refresh on some of the source myths. 2.75/5 stars.

I finished David Baldacci’s A Calamity of Souls. It was quite powerful and one thing happened at the end that I hated but was not unexpected. 5/5 stars
After reading the above, I needed something light so I just finished David Rosenfelt’s Dog Day Afternoon – An Andy Carpenter Mystery. This series is one of our favorites ~ mystery/humor/golden retrievers/great characters! 4/5 stars

I read two this week.
The Boyfriend by Freida. Typical for her and fun. Didn't see that twist! 5/5 stars The Chamber by Will Dean. Wow! This one will give you claustrophobia for sure! This was such a unique book. I had to read spoilers on Reddit about the ending. Someone over there actually emailed the author to get more info. 4/5 stars.
